Learning Objectives
1. Explain the formation of Headlands and Bays2. Recognise Key Features of Hard Rock
Coastline3. Define Key Words associated with chalk cliff
erosion

Harder rock
Softer rock
Harder rock
The more resistant rock is left sticking out
into the sea called a headland.
The softer rock is eroded by the sea-
forming a bay.
This area is now more sheltered, this
encourages deposition and beaches are
formed.
![Page 11: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

Harder rock
Surrounded by deep water and exposed to
the full force of the waves- the headlands
are eroded.
The shallower waters in the bay continue to encourage deposition.

This is a chalk headland.
Because chalk is a sedimentary rock, lines of weakness run throughout
the headland.
Hydraulic action will exploit these weaknesses.
![Page 15: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Between low and high tide, waves will attack the
base of the headland.
HT
LTThe process of corrasion will undercut the base of the cliff, forming a wave
cut notch.
![Page 16: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
The undercutting by corrasion will make the
cliff unstable.
HT
LTThis creates small caves which are enlarged over
time by erosion.
![Page 17: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Caves develop on either side of the headland.
HT
LT
These caves erode back through the headland and
meet, forming an arch.
![Page 18: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Continued erosion at the base of the arch will cause
the roof to become unstable.
HT
LTIt may collapse leaving a stack.
![Page 19: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Continued erosion of the base of the stack may lead to its collapse, resulting in
a stump.

Homework• Due next lesson- 21st January (Monday)• Find a picture of a chalk headland and label its
features (e.g. Old Harry, Flamborough Head etc.)
• Try and be original• If you have problems printing, come and see
me before it’s due• No homework=after school detention• I don’t set you much so you can’t complain

Pop-up headland..
![Page 22: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
1
You need your template. This will represent a chalk
headland.
![Page 23: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
2
Using a blue crayon- shade the outside horizontal strips- these represent the sea.
![Page 24: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
3
Using a green crayon- shade the middle horizontal strip-
this represents the top of the headland- exposed to
weathering.
![Page 25: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
4 Just above the horizontal
blue lines- shade a grey line-
make sure it reaches the top
of the wave-cut notch. This
represents wave action
between high and low tide.
![Page 26: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
5
Carefully cut out all the black areas on the template- with the exception of the wave-
cut notch.
Don’t cut off your stump!
![Page 27: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)

It should look like this...

7 Using a ruler, carefully fold the horizontal lines.
![Page 29: Headlands](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062812/56816284550346895dd2f35b/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
