We rose to the Challenge and raised £2538.48…thank you!

A fantastic achievement by our students…and you! The basketball match between our Post 16 team and the

teachers was a huge success. The atmosphere in the Sports Hall last Friday was electric. Mr Milburn not only

had to don a pink tutu, as students raised over £200, he also had to endure waxing his extremely hairy legs

as they raised over £500! Not sure that’s something he’s ever going to want to suffer again.

Mr Milburn goes above and beyond for Sport Relief, the story so far…

Mr Milburn is also running in this year’s London Marathon for the charity ‘Get Kids Going’ a National charity which gives disabled children and young people, up to the age of 26, the wonderful opportunity of participating in sport. You can follow my final weeks of training at

Adiós y buen viaje

Goodbye to our Spanish exchange students who leave today, Friday. They have had a busy week with us, enjoying everything that Yorkshire can offer. With visits to Skipton Castle, York and Haworth, a quiz and a farewell meal at the Aagrah, their week has been full of Yorkshire life! Thank you to all the families who have supported our

Spanish visitors, providing them with a home from home. Gracias le agradecemos su apoyo!

Arabic club Last Thursday the Arabic Club organised its first open day, ‘An afternoon of Middle Eastern Experience’. Students were invited to taste Arabic delicacies, find out about Arab countries and engage in Arabic conversation.

Spring has Sprung! You would be forgiven for thinking that we were still in winter with the cold snap we have experienced this

week but spring really is here! Our garden has never looked so good at this time of year…and that is all

down to the hard work of our Gardening Club and the Work Related Learning team put in week in and week out.

Just some of the delicacies on offer.

Well done to Desideria Sardelli (10GS) who took part in the regional final of the Rotary cooking competition at the weekend in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. She had a stunning menu planned and although not the winner we are all proud of her progressing so far.

Desi’s Menu

One thousand leaves of potato and haddock on a bed of spring leaves and tomato concasse with balsamic vinaigrette.

~ Yorkshire sourced lamb rack cooked in a Bronte pistachio crust, served

with a spinach mousse, baby carrots glace and a lemony hollandaise sauce.

~ White chocolate mousse with berries in two consistencies and a hint of

violet.

Netball News Congratulations to our netballers who have been in action this week. On Monday the U12A team and the U14A team played at St Joseph’s. Our U13B team were playing in the Netball Emerging League on Tuesday. The U13B reached the semi-finals but lost to Dixons Trinity A team. The U12B tried hard but didn't get through to semis although it was a great experience for them as they were playing with U13s.

Good luck to our Year 11 Applied Learning students who are undertaking expeditions as part of their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award. The expeditions will take place on the 9th and 10th April and 7th and 8th May and the following intrepid explorers will be giving their all. Harry Blessington (11JCT), Alice Bryett (11JB), Stan Collins (11JCT), Ella Frear (11KPC), Jonny Holden (11LSL), Angus Holyroyd-Penny (11SMS), Helen Kelly (11MH), Emily McKie (11JCT), Sam Melia (11JCT), Jake Rowen (11PO), David Whitham (11MH) and Victoria Willoughby (11ISR).

Congratulations to Beth Williamson (13JES/JLI) who has been successful in her application to Rolls Royce and has been offered a place on their prestigious Accountancy Apprenticeship Programme. Beth starts her AAT Accountancy training at the UK Head Office of Rolls Royce in Derby from August this year. Good luck Beth!

Homophones 1 Recap: One Direction Do Tesco

The band were straight off the plane to a new hotel. But as the hotel staff weren’t expecting them, Liam suggested they pop into Tesco to get a bit of shopping. ‘What are we doing here?’ moaned Harry as his quiff started to flop. ‘I’ve been up all night. Just take me home would you.’ ‘Yeah,’ agreed Zayn, let’s get a cab from that taxi company we sang about.’ ‘But there are too many people in the Addison Lee, Zayn. Doesn’t Ilkley have a taxi company?’

‘Come on lads,’ encouraged Liam. ‘Just a quick bit of shopping, then we can go.’ ‘But I look awful,’ continued Harry. ‘Supposing someone notices me looking like this.’ ‘Look Harry, you’re turning heads as you walk through the door,’ said Niall. ‘Yeah,’ agreed Louis. ‘You don’t need make up to cover up. And you wanted to wear those,’ he continued pointing at the Harry’s skinny jeans. ‘Ok,’ said Liam, taking charge. ‘So which direction is the broccoli?’ ‘It’s One Direction, not Which Direction,’ moaned Harry, his quiff drooping even more. ‘Anyway, what’s wrong with pizza?’ ‘You’ve had quite enough junk food for one tour,’ added Zayn. Come on you two.’

Homophones 2: One Direction Write Another Song Liam: So, we have eight hours until the concert tonight, what should we do until then? Zayn: I think we need to practise for our gig. Niall: We’ve done that already Zayn. Louis: Well maybe it’s time to work on another song. Harry: Great idea Louis! It’s too quiet round here anyway. Niall: So, what should the song be about? Liam: What about the weather? Something about the sun and everyone being happy. Zayn: I don’t know whether a song about the weather is a good idea. Think of our fan base man. It would be quite a risk. I just don’t know if it would be cool. We need something more original. Liam: What about a song about broccoli? That’s never been done before. All (except Liam): No way. Harry: What is it with you and broccoli today? Louis: We need a song that tells people about who we are and what our message is Niall: That’s right- the band and its message of love and peace to all. Louis: Is that our message? Harry: Ok, let me run this idea past you. What about a song where a boy met a girl- they passed in the street and then and they danced all night? Niall: I’m sure that sounds familiar… Zayn: So, shall we just practise for our gig then?

One to Watch Habbo used to be called Habbo Hotel, and is a social networking site aimed at teenagers, although we know of children as young as 8 years old who use it. The site has been the subject of considerable concern because of pornographic messages.

App ‘azzard! Any apps our students are asked to install on their iPad are fee. However, other apps can be installed on the device (or on mobiles) and there can be risks and cost associated with it: • A child may not be aware of potential costs if only accessing 'free' content. • Some free games ask for credit to be spent in order to continue to the next level, and while the amount you pay each time might be low, it can add up and be a shock for the bill payer at the end of the month. • Your child may download a video or ringtone without realising that this has triggered a subscription to a service that will start charging the phone regularly. • Always be sure of your child's activity on your smartphone or tablet. • Do not let your child have use of your mobile device if you want to avoid any unexpected surprises • Always guard your mobile device with a PIN, which you should keep to yourself. • Do not reveal the login details you use for App Store, Google Play or other sources of apps. • Always check your phone bills for numbers or payments you do not recognise.

Click Jacking Defn. ‘Where fraudsters attempting to get your unsuspecting child to click on something tempting, which results in downloading malware or tricking them into sharing private information.’ Examples of click jacking are a funny video with a clever caption such as “OMG! You won’t believe what this girl did!”, or a fake app that can show your children who has looked at their page.

All IGS iPads should have the name and tutor group of the student owner as

part of their lock screen image. This helps when reuniting owners and iPads in

cases of forgetfulness!
