In his excellent book, AThoroughbred Stallions,@ TonyMorris had the following to say of the late, great Mr. Prospector: AHis stock come in all shapes and sizes, and theycome with physical faults which most judges wouldregard as unacceptable in the progeny of any normalstallion. They are plain about the head, they havecrooked legs--many, like their sire, turn their off-foreout--and they have small feet.@

In the circumstances, breeders could be forgiven forhaving qualms about inbreeding to Mr. Prospector, butsome were inevitably tempted to try to reinforce theinfluence of this remarkable stallion. After all, howmany stallions achieve more than 15-percent stakeswinners (especially after starting out in Florida, as Mr.Prospector did), and how many can boast an AEI of3.99? One of the first stallions to enjoy marked successwith inbreeding to Mr. Prospector was his grandson Mr. Greeley. The first crop by this son of Gone Westwas headed by El Corredor, a Cigar Mile winner inbred3x4 to Mr. Prospector. Then, three crops later, Mr. Greeley came up with the accomplished juvenileWhywhywhy, who is also inbred 3x4. Interestingly, both these sons of Mr. Greeley aredoing well enough to suggest they have a long-termfuture. El Corredor has already matched Mr. Greeley=s feat ofsiring a Grade I winner in each of his first three crops,in the process showing the versatility which is becom-ing essential in today=s industry. The Hill >n= Dale stallionfirst sprang to prominence as the sire of the high-classfilly Adieu, who raced exclusively on traditional dirt. Caulfield cont. p7

Next came Dominican, who shocked the future Ken-tucky Derby winner Street Sense in the Blue Grass S.on Polytrack. And then his third crop supplied that finefilly Backstreet Rhythm. Although Backstreet Rhythmhandled dirt well enough to finish third in the Breeders=Cup Juvenile Fillies, she has since flourished on turf, notably taking the Garden City S. Whywhywhy is also showing he can sire very goodwinners on all surfaces. His first big success came inthe 2007 Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf, whenNownownow repelled the Irish raider Achill Island.Although Nownownow failed to win again on turf as athree-year-old, he looked very much at home on SantaAnita=s Pro-Ride when he took the GII San Fernando S.three days ago. That San Fernando victory came justhours after Ikigai, another member of Whywhywhy=sfirst crop, ran out an appropriate winner of the GIII Mr.Prospector S. on Gulfstream Park=s traditional dirt track. This versatility being shown by Mr. Greeley=s stallionsons is hardly surprising, considering his own pedigreeand achievements. With an American dirt horse as hissire and a brilliant European turf filly as his second dam,Mr. Greeley has an international pedigree and his eightGrade I winners divide equally between dirt and turf.

There was a time, of course, when Mr. Prospector=sprogeny had a reputation for being unsuited by Euro-pean turf, but that theory eventually lost credence, thanks to the Group 1 victories of such as Kingmambo,Machiavellian, Distant View, Miswaki, Hello Gorgeous,Jade Robbery, Procida, Lycius, Ravinella, Ta Rib,Macoumba, Tersa and Coup de Genie. This extensive list, made up largely of French-trainedhorses, supports Tony Morris=s suggestion (made wellbefore all the evidence was in) that Ait still seems thattheir feet do not take well to firm ground and undulat-ing surfaces in England; they are happier on the con-stantly watered courses in France.@ To return to Whywhywhy, it is interesting to look atthe top-ranked males on the 2002 Experimental FreeHandicap. The pecking order was as follows: Vindica-tion was top with 126, followed by Toccet (124),Kafwain and Sky Mesa (both 122) and thenWhywhywhy, Hold That Tiger and Icecoldbeeratreds (allon 119). However, it had been Whywhywhy whostarted favorite for the Breeders= Cup Juvenile, on thestrength of victories on the last three of his four ap-pearances. Precocious enough to have made his debutin May, the Biancone trainee reeled off decisive victo-ries in the GIII Flash S. over five furlongs, the GII San-ford S. over six and the GI Futurity S. over a mile.Unfortunately, Whywhywhy faded into 10th place inthe Juvenile and his sophomore season also proved tobe a distinct anti-climax. Consequently Whywhywhy=s fee was no higher than$7,500 when he retired to stand alongside his sire forthe 2004 season at Spendthrift. He has therefore donewell to sire four stakes winners, including Nownownowand Ikigai, from a first crop of only 59 named foals. Hissecond Spendthift crop numbered only around 36named foals, which will prove something of a handicap, and his third-crop juveniles, sired after Whywhywhyand Mr. Greeley were switched to Gainesway, alsonumber fewer than 50.

However, his first yearlings were very well received in2006, with several selling for more than $200,000, andthis translated into considerably increased demand forhis services in 2007. He has more than 100 yearlingsand is credited with covering 141 mares in 2008, afterNownownow=s 2007 Breeders= Cup victory. Whywhywhy=s graded race double a month beforethe start of the 2009 season will surely guarantee himhis third consecutive sizeable book, which is why I sayhe now appears to have a long-term future, eventhough his fee has rarely risen above $7,500. Nownownow has another link to Gainesway in thatthis colt=s third dam, Riviere Enchantee, was ahalf-sister to Lypheor. This French Group 3 winner wassold to Japan after just one season at stud in Ireland, but that single Irish crop contained Tolomeo, winner ofthe 1983 Budweiser Million, and Royal Heroine, wholived up to her name in the 1984 Breeders= Cup Mile.Few stallions ever returned from Japan at that time, butGainesway managed to return Lypheor to the West andhe justified the move by siring several good winnersbefore dying comparatively young.

Nownownow=ssecond damAspalathus was alsoby a Gainesway stal-lion in Spruce Nee-dles, amile-and-a-half horsewho acted on dirtand turf. The SanRafael winner=sbroodmare sire ExitTo Nowhere--bestknown nowadays as

a sire of jumpers in Europe--was a high-class miler. AsExit To Nowhere is a half-brother to Mr. Prospector=sGroup 1 winners Machiavellian and Coup de Genie, it iseasy to see why one of his daughters would suit astallion inbred to this great stallion. Ikigai, for his part,is inbred 4x5x4 to Mr Prospector.
