Welcome to the December edition of Heads Up, our monthly round up of regional leadership development activity. It’s hard to believe Christmas is just one week away as I sit here in the office windows open and an unseasonable temperature of 12°C! It feels more like spring, but the dark nights, traffic jams and city revellers provide a clue to the season.

First I would like to congratulate all the nominees and winners at last months Regional Leadership Awards. The event, now in its third year was a resounding success and a wonderful opportunity to recognise the talent & achievements across this region. Award winners will be entered into the national leadership awards which will be held in March 2016. We will be keeping our fingers crossed for you!

I am looking forward to the New Year which sees the team planning activity into the next financial year. Members of the Yorkshire & Humber Regional Leadership Council have identified Systems Leadership and Talent Management as key priorities for future activity. We are keen to build on the existing work in these areas. We are very excited by the prospect of co-producing with yourselves a region wide talent scheme that aims to more effectively develop and deploy talent. The scheme is embryonic at the moment, but we will be driving this work forward in the coming months and are hopeful that we can do this in a systemic way that involves senior leaders across the patch. As part of this process in March, we intend to host a Development Event for Chief Executives and other System Stakeholders. The event will be a development opportunity and will also provide space to test out these identified priorities and shape the strategy for leadership and organisational development in Yorkshire and Humber.

We are also working up proposals to address the System Leadership agenda; as a starter for ten, we have commissioned three one day System Leadership Learning Workshops (read more on page 7), we will then be shaping a range of additional offers that help leaders to learn the skills and behaviours necessary for effectively working in and with their systems. Again, I’m looking forward to discussing these new offers with regional stakeholders to inform their content! It is an exciting New Year ahead!

From myself and the team a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our Heads Up readers. We look forward to continuing to work with you on the leadership and organisation development agenda in 2016!

Congratulations to the Regional Leadership Recognition Awards Finalists

We were delighted to host the Regional Leadership Recognition Awards for Yorkshire and the Humber at a special event on 25 November at the Marriott Hotel in Leeds.

We received 124 nominations in total across nine categories, from staff and service users across the NHS.

The event was a celebration of leadership at all levels in the NHS, and allowed us to recognise the fantastic achievements our colleagues make every day in providing exceptional care whether on the frontline or behind the scenes.

Thank you to all who took the time to nominate their colleagues and teams for an award, and a huge thanks to our judging panel for their help. You can read more, view photos and watch videos of all our finalists on our website.

Systems Leadership Learning Labs in the New Year!We increasingly need to work and lead collectively across our health and social care communities to meet the needs of the people we serve. We talk a lot about Systems Leadership, but what does this really mean? How do we extend and develop our leadership behaviour and mindset to influence the wider system alongside our organisational responsibilities? This Learning Laboratory enables you to really explore how productive partnership and systems working can be developed and sustained within your own context.

It is a dynamic, high impact, experiential learning event, in which we create a real organisational system in the room. During the morning, we’ll experience typical power dynamics and we’ll uncover why systems leadership is often really tricky. So much seems to get in the way – not least hierarchies, differing agendas, organisational identities and disempowering cultures. We will work together to build a shared understanding of leading across systems and in the afternoon we will focus on translating this into practice in your own contexts.

The Systems Leadership Learning Lab will equip you, your colleagues and partners to:• enhance your collective leadership effectiveness• relate to partner agencies, service users and colleagues more effectively• jointly raise the quality of services• together improve client and employee satisfaction• collectively deliver better value for money

We will be holding three, one-day learning workshops in the New Year Wednesday 27 January 2016 – Radisson Blu Leeds Tuesday 16 February 2016 – Mercure Sheffield – St Paul’s Hotel & Spa Friday 18 March – Mercure Hull Royal Hotel

These workshops will be particularly beneficial if you are currently working with partners across your system. We would therefore encourage you to bring colleagues with you to the workshop so that you can learn together in this dynamic environment.

To book your place on one of these workshops, please contact Rebecca Bevington or call 07780 587183.

Inclusive Talent Management

We have recently commissioned the support of a few external and internal NHS development partners to help us deliver our inclusive talent management work streams.

Beverley Powell, Equality and Diversity Manager from Barnsley Foundation Trust and Amanda Kearsley, Leadership Development Facilitator from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals are beginning a number of sponsored projects with us around career management and implementing more inclusive talent management.

We have also commissioned HNA Associates to develop an OD resource to support people with a role in improving workforce and leadership diversity.

These will be tailored to individual organisations and to ensure that we have a thorough understanding of your specific organisational needs and challenges. It will also ensure that we are directing resources appropriately.

We will be running a number of focus groups in November and December, which will explore some of the challenges and hurdles organisations are facing.

The groups will also serve to get a good understanding of requirements of individuals and teams responsible for implementing diversity and inclusion strategies across organisations.

Targeted invitations to the focus groups went out earlier in the month.

Opportunities to be involved are limited, but if you would value taking part, please contact Andrea Overton for a discussion.
