Message from The Headteacher
March 2016
Issue
Dear Parents
This term is flying past and I cannot believe that we are already in March! It is particularly great to see lighter spring evenings. You may remember that I informed you during the autumn term that we were submitting an application to become an academy sponsor and to set up a Multi-Academy Trust. I am delighted to inform you that our application has been successful. At the moment, we are a single Academy Trust, but in time we envisage that we shall be joined by other like-minded schools – primary and secondary – who share our school vision, ethos, culture and sense of ambition for all students in our community. This is hugely exciting for us and I shall keep you informed about developments.
I do hope that you have a good Easter break and I look forward to seeing all students back in school for the summer term.
Yours faithfully
Mrs K Canham, Headteacher
ONLINE BOOKING FOR PARENTS EVENINGS We are introducing a new online booking system that will allow parents to pre-book 5 minute slots with their child’s teachers via the school website.
One week prior to the Parents’ Evening an email will be sent home with instructions on how to use the system. The new system will go live in time for the Year 10 Parents’ Evening on 27 April 2016.
Heads Up
Lauren Sweeting from Year 10 is leading the way
with organising this amazing event, raising funds
for children in Syria. The evening will include a
variety of acts from song and dance performed by
our talented Haygrove students from all year
groups. A raffle and refreshments will also be
available throughout the evening. There will be
prizes for the winning performers which will be
judged by a special guest from local radio
Access FM as well as a selection from our
esteemed teachers. Tickets on sale now from the
Finance Office (£3), or on the door.
You can now follow us on Twitter @Haygrove and Facebook

The word salt comes from the word ‘salarium’ in latin
(salary). This is because roman soldiers used to be
partly paid in salt. 75% of the salt we eat is already in
the food we buy. 11 year olds and older should have no
more than 6g salt per day, this equates to just one
teaspoon’s worth! Younger children should have even
less. Eating too much salt is bad for your health as it can
raise your blood pressure. High blood pressure can
harm your health by causing a stroke and heart attacks.
We can reduce the amount of salt we eat by not adding
salt when cooking or putting it on our food at the table.
Most food in our cupboards at home will have a food
label; check how much salt is in the product and add up
the salt you would have in a day.
AGE MAX SALT IN-TAKE PER DAY
0-6 months less than 1 gram
7-12 months 1 gram
1-3 years 2 grams
4-6 years 3 grams
7-10 years 5 grams
11-14 years 6 grams
Adults 6 grams
SALT—how much is safe?
Perhaps your hands were shaking and your knees were
like jelly. With support you overcame the
shaky hand experience but
could have easily turned
and run away! Preparing
for the world of work can
be daunting but with a little support any worries and
challenges can be overcome.
The young people in Bridgwater are making major
decisions during their time at secondary school about
their options after school, including apprenticeships,
college and University. Understanding the skills needed
by employers are as important as getting good
qualifications. Could you help young people in the
Bridgwater area develop their employability skills by
being a mentor?
No previous mentoring experience is required, if you're
enthusiastic we can help with the rest.
If yes or you would like to learn more, please contact [email protected]
Calling all parents/carers….
Do you remember your first day
at work?
Breakfast is
the most important meal of the day. Breakfast provides you with the energy and nutrients that lead to increased concentration in the classroom. Studies show that breakfast can be important in maintaining a healthy body weight. Please try to find time in the morning to have something to eat to help reduce the risk of feeling light headed and possibly fainting.
Our students had a busy weekend of sport when they participated in two regional competitions in netball and table tennis. The South West Regional Netball Tournament competition was tough, with teams from as far afield as Gloucester and Wiltshire taking part, but the Haygrove girls were proud, winning three of their six matches to finish overall as the 5th best school in the South West. We entered three teams into the South West Regional Table Tennis finals. The U13 Girls played some excellent games and will proceed to the next round. The U16 Boys and U16 Girls also performed well but were unfortunate to miss out on qualifying to the next round. Mr James Gray, Head of PE at Haygrove School said, “This was a great weekend of sport for Haygrove. Our students are always keen to play competitively and I am proud of what they each achieved.”

Fifteen-year-old Daisy thinks
she knows all about love. Her
mother died giving birth to her,
and now her dad has sent her
away for the summer, to live in
the English countryside with
cousins she's never even met.
There she'll discover what real
love is: something violent,
mysterious and wonderful. There her world will
be turned upside down and a perfect summer
will explode into a million bewildering pieces.
How will Daisy live then?
