WHAT IS “SKILLED FOR HEALTH?”

Skilled for Health is the national Health Literacy programme for adults who have low levels of Health Literacy as well as general language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills and who, as a result, often find it hard to make healthier choices, adhere to treatment regimes, navigate their way around health systems and act on health promotion messages. The aim of the programme is to use health topics that are targeted at people with lower Health Literacy, and general LLN needs, who do not traditionally participate in health improvement initiatives. This is done by enhancing their skills and knowledge which In turn supports them to both understand and act upon a range of health messages. It is this embedded learning approach which makes it unique and helps empower people by ensuring they have both the skills and information they need to be able to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing.
