FIRM PROFILE

Polytech Associates Inc. is a mid-sized, woman-owned architecture, planning, and interior design practice based in San Francisco, California. Our firm is a collaborative practice, in which our six working Principals partner with our clients to create environments that promote healing.

We strive to understand the project from all perspectives: client, caregiver, project team, design team. This process begins by actively listening, identifying the unique goals, design criteria, and elements necessary to create a functional building. In turn, this empowers our clients to provide the best experience for their patients, caregivers, administrators, and employees.

As we have grown our practice over the last twenty-four years, we have applied this tenet to all our projects; whether we are programming hospitals or planning laboratories, creating master plans, renovations, or developing seismic upgrades, we remain deeply committed to providing our clients with a project that allows them to do their best work.

SOUTH OF MARKET HEALTH CENTERSAN FRANCISCO, CA

South of Market Health Center (SMHC) is a nonprofit community clinic providing quality healthcare to under-served members of this San Francisco neighborhood. Accepting the position of Executive Director in 1990, Charles Range has led SMHC with the philosophy that all people deserve the same high level of health care. With the support of key community stakeholders, Mr. Range set his vision to construct a new community clinic that elevates the health care delivery experience for all: patient, caregiver and staff member. Mr. Range believes that a calming, functional environment, state-of-the-art equipment and organizational tools, and talented staff are fundamental to providing top quality health care. These elements create a healing, positive experience, strengthen the patient/caregiver relationship, which ultimately leads to desired outcomes.

Polytech Associates partnered with SMHC to bring their vision to reality. The design program for the 20,000 sf clinic combines modern, clean lines with a light color palette, rich textures, and an open space plan that allows natural light to punctuate the space. Each of these design elements was carefully selected, and lend an element of comfort and calm to the building. The open plan allows SMHC the flexibility to increase the number of patients and services they provide. The new space will include a full-service patient and community pharmacy, and treatment spaces for women’s and children’s services, health education, adult medicine, and urgent care.

Polytech Associates, in association with Paulett Taggart Architects, has begun work on LoPrest, the renovation program for South of Market Health Center’s former space at 551-555 Minna Street. The new building will provide expanded space for a behavioral health services clinic and associated administrative spaces.

CENTRAL UTILITY PLANT AND REPLACEMENT HOSPITALREDWOOD CITY MEDICAL CENTERREDWOOD CITY, CA

Central Utility PlantPolytech Associates is serving as Architect-of-Record for the 16,000 sf Central Utility Plant, which will supply all utilities to the new hospital and house the Facilities Services Department. The site area for the building is restricted by the adjacent access roadway, new replacement hospital and adjacent office building and parking garage. The restricted site required a modification of Kaiser standards, reduction of the building area and a two-story design. The exterior of the building uses an insulated metal panel and glazing system with a metal rooftop screen for mechanical equipment.

The exterior materials, colors and details were required to be compatible with the new hospital and accommodated the Redwood City Design Review requirements within the Kaiser cost model. Building Information Modeling (BIM) with Revit is being used in the development of the new CUP, a process that has allowed us to build consensus between our design team, Kaiser Permanente, stakeholders, and the General Contractor since the start of the project. Utilizing Building Information Modeling with the Revit model allows us to coordinate with the subcontractors’ detailers to avoid expensive change orders through clash detection. This allows us to review any proposed changes and, more importantly, the impact they will have on the building when a substitution or cost savings is proposed.

The project is located in an OSHPD One area, and was given approval by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development in August, 2011. The Central Utility Plant was also reviewed and approved by Redwood City Planning Department. Construction on the Central Utility Plant began in August 2011, and is slated for on-time, on-budget completion in 2014.

Replacement HospitalOur design team worked closely with the client and end users to integrate the interior design and furniture selection for CT Scanner and Clinical Technology areas, Physical Medicine, Inpatient Neuro CCU, Acute Care and Interventional Radiology, Inpatient Rehabilitation, Neurology, and Health Information Management departments into the new, 280,665 gsf hospital, which is being designed by HOK San Francisco.

2425 GEARY BOULEVARD, SEISMIC RENOVATION AND EXPANSIONSAN FRANCISCO, CA

Kaiser Permanente recommended that Polytech Associates assume responsibility for the seismic upgrade and expansion for their hospital at 2425 Geary Boulevard after the original architect closed their local office. Twelve years had passed since the design program was approved, and significant changes in technology, user needs, and best practices that Kaiser adopted as part of their delivery system had not been incorporated into the program. The hospital is located in an OSHPD One area, and the portion of the project that had been approved by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development had lapsed.

Polytech was retained to create the updates to the design program that would meet patient and caregiver needs, and allow Kaiser to incorporate technological advances and best practices into their delivery system. After examining and integrating updates to the design program, our team successfully led the project through the OSHPD approval process. We then worked closely with Kaiser to create a phased implementation plan that allowed the hospital to remain in-operation during construction, with no unplanned shutdowns.

Over the three-year process, Polytech helped expand the hospital to 360,000 sf, and increased the total bed count to 323. Following the successful completion of the seismic upgrade and expansion, our design team has continued to provide remodel programs, renovations, and upgrades for various departments throughout the hospital.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO MEDICAL CENTER, 1200 EL CAMINO REALSOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA

Backfill ProjectKaiser Permanente experienced a tremendous amount of growth in its membership, and outgrew its facility at 1200 El Camino Real as a result. Kaiser retained Polytech Associates to develop a medical planning program that facilitated the relocation of the Gastroenterology and Infusion Department, allowing for the expansion of the Head and Neck Surgery, Radiology, Medicine, and Surgery Departments. Our design team created a phased implementation plan that carefully outlined the expansion process so adjacent departments remained operational throughout construction.

Head and Neck Surgery DepartmentFollowing the relocation and expansion, Kaiser contracted our design team to provide the renovation of the Opthalmology Department into the Head and Neck Surgery Department. The 4,000 sf department now houses audiology rooms, provider offices, examination spaces, and a minor procedure suite.

Orchid Center for Gastroenterology and InfusionPolytech Associates renovated the Pediatrics Clinic into the new 16,000 sf Gastroenterology Infusion Center to be used for chemotherapy. The new space includes five procedure rooms, treatment area, recovery, scope washroom, examination rooms, provider offices, and support services.

395 HICKEY BOULEVARDDALY CITY, CA

395 Hickey Boulevard was originally conceived by a developer as a commercial office space, and was leased by Kaiser Permanente to become a medical office building to better serve their members in Daly City. However, the horizontal space plan was not conducive to the needs of a healthcare provider and Kaiser Permanente selected Polytech Associates to provide a master plan, program, and interior architecture program for the 140,000 sf building that would meet the functional needs of their members, caregivers, and administrators.

The new program integrates space for seventy-two providers, offices, cafe, conference center, training rooms, and two pharmacies on six levels. Treatment areas for Mammography, Pediatrics, Primary Care/General Medicine, OB/GYN, Opthamology/Optometry, and Health Education are also included in the program. Our design team created a separate Teen Clinic, giving this population a more private area for waiting and examination. The medical office building also features four levels of sub-level parking. The modular space plan provides maximum flexibility to accommodate for future changes in service and growth in membership. Departments can be expanded as needed, and waiting areas and group work areas are located at the perimeter of the floors for ease of movement, and to take advantage of views and natural light.

DNA EXTRACTION LABORATORYBERKELEY, CA

Polytech Associates provided full architectural services for a new, 5,500 sf DNA laboratory at Kaiser Permanente’s facility in Berkeley, CA. The expanded space allows researchers to store 500,000 blood and saliva samples in a database for disease prevention and genetic studies.

An important component of our scope of work was the creation of a ventilation system that holds the correct percentage of oxygen in the air in the event of a liquid nitrogen spill. An alarm system that signals users to evacuate the laboratory was incorporated. Our design team also integrated space for ambient storage, which is used for storing DNA extracted from blood, and cryogenic storage, which stores DNA extracted from saliva.

HOME INTRAVENOUS PHARMACYBERKELEY, CA

Polytech Associates provided full laboratory planning and architectural design services for the remodel of a 3,800 sf first floor home intravenous laboratory and pharmacy in Berkeley, CA.

The former laboratory did not meet regulatory standards, and the equipment for each department was placed inefficiently. The new facility provides for adequate space so that clinical departments, including microbiology, hematology, urinalysis, and chemistry, will have individual spaces that allow them to house the equipment relative to their function, thereby creating a more efficient work environment.

Our design team implemented the remodel program through a six-phase, two-year schedule, which allowed the laboratory to remain fully operational during construction.
