Page 7: Healthcare Qualifications and Short Courses - …...joined forces to provide an innovative, technology-driven MSc in Advanced Restorative Dental Practice. This programme brings together

This programme is for the busy dental practitioner who has an interest in high quality, evidence-based restorative treatment. You’ll be taught by dental professionals who have amassed many years of experience not only in teaching but also in applying their knowledge to their own patient care. The variety of teaching brings you up to date with GDC requirements, enhances your record-keeping skills, communication skills and team-working ability.

Covering each of the restorative disciplines, your practice will be enhanced and given knowledge and insights into modern techniques and evidence-based dentistry. You will learn to apply these skills and look at when and how to apply adjunct therapies such as bleaching and general practitioner applied orthodontics.

For your dissertation, you will choose a topic you are keen to learn more about or holds a particular interest for you and develop a deeper appreciation and knowledge in your chosen area.

to be completed during the unit. Webinars and recorded lectures

are taken online.

A webinar is a type of web conference, with an online seminar.

The direction of the presentation is primarily led by the

presenter. However, audience participation is integral and

indeed necessary for a more useful and interesting experience.

A webinar is live and interactive – with the ability to give receive

and discuss information. A webinar is typically 1-2 hours long.

CLINICAL CASE REPORTS

Photographic documentation and written descriptions of clinical

cases will be submitted online in a standard pre-formatted

template file for assessment purposes.

The images will include before, after and significant steps in

the treatment. Detailed guidelines for case presentation and

photography will be provided.

Each case is examined anonymously by a minimum of two

instructors (and a third, in case of disagreement), marked and

returned to the participant with an evaluation and comments.

READINGS

The appraisal of current research will be an important part of

the programme.

Required and suggested reading take the form of peer reviewed

articles, chapters of textbooks or other published sources.

Articles are accessed online via the Aberdeen Library.

RESEARCH PROJECT / DISSERTATION

A dissertation is a detailed piece of writing designed to further

develop your knowledge and provides an opportunity to draw on

research skills developed across the course.

At a Masters level, the dissertation requires independent thinking

and an ability to critique your own work and that of others. A

Dissertation Tutor will provide support in developing the

dissertation and is responsible for assessing and monitoring

students’ progress throughout the unit.

PHOTOGRAPHIC REQUIREMENTS

The following recommendations are based on what the course tutors use in their practices.

If you are new to clinical photography you may wish to wait until photography has been discussed in Unit 1 before buying anything. This module will also help you to understand the required photographic views for case submission and what the examiners are looking for in each case type.

Don’t try to save money by getting something that is cheap but hard to get the right photos on.

These photos will be the only way that we can judge your work and if we cannot evaluate the work done due to poor quality photos, the case will not pass.

We do not recommend any form of LED-based ‘flash’ or other forms of continuous output light source – these simply do not give out enough light to correctly expose the shot at the necessary depth of field.

Blurred or underexposed photos cannot be evaluated.

Do not try to use a zoom lens with a ‘macro’ capability – it will not produce suitable images for case submission, no matter what the person in the camera shop might tell you. You need a dedicated macro lens such as the ones listed.

Camera System

• Camera setup must be capable of taking the required views

• Lens must be capable of producing 1:1 equivalent view

• Manual focusing capability essential

• Camera must be relatively simple to use so as to acquire views correctly focused and exposed

• Camera must support the taking of RAW format files. For convenience simultaneous capture of RAW & JPEG is essential.

• Lenses with Image Stabilisation or Vibration Reduction are not necessary for clinical photography.

Canon

Suitable models:

Any current Canon DSLR model.EOS 5D - is a good camera, but probably overkill unless photography is a major hobby!

Older models, no longer in production but also suitable:

EOS 300D (Rebel)EOS 350D (Rebel XT)EOS 450D (Rebel XT)EOS 500D (Rebel XTi)EOS 40DEOS 30DEOS 20D

Lenses

Canon 100mm f 2.8 macro lensSigma 105mm f 2.8 macro lensTamron 90mm macro lens

Note that any 60m macro lens is not recommended. This is because proximity to the subject makes it very easy to overexpose the shot, especially with the entry level cameras it is designed to work with.

Flashes

Canon MR14 EX ring flashSigma EM140 DG ring flashDine ring and point flashNissin MF18 ring flash

In general we suggest Canon lens and ring flash or Sigma lens and ring flash as the respective flashes are designed to fit onto the lenses without the need for an additional adaptor. Dine ring and point flash will fit any of these lenses.

The Canon MT24EX Macro twin light is a very good “second” flash to take more “artistic” photographs in the mouth, but for convenience a ring flash is better as the primary flash.

Nikon’s R1C1 macro flash (2 flash heads and hot shoe controller) is a more sophisticated flash unit, which also needs an additional flash bracket to use it to its full potential.

Use of this unit is greatly enhanced by an additional flash bracket which allows easy repositioning of the flash elements.

For case submission purposes this level of sophistication is not necessary, so we recommend the ring flash to all but the most experienced of users.
