ARE YOU AN EMOTIONAL EATER?

Page 4: Healthy4Life health-coaching emotional eating

Two of he identified reasons behind the development of emotionaleating are related to:

1. CHILDHOOD, during this time we might have learnt to associatefood to emotions and comfort. Many parents use food as rewardingstrategy with their children and this builds up associations too.

2. DIETING, embracing a “diet mentality” leads to developing stress oranxiety around food. A frequent dieter would think about foods as"good" or "bad” and when reaching a food that is considered “bad” thedieter would feel temporarily better (rewarded). On the other hand, when eating anything outside of the “allowed” food list, the dieterwould soon feel frustrated to have broken the rules. A viciousemotional circle is created.

eating habits• Eat always when truly hungry• Learn to listen to your body needs (real hunger vs. emotions)• When you are full stop eating, don’t get stuffed!• Eat always in a very calm and relaxed environment• Do not engage in other activities while eating• Eat slowly and be present and focus on your food• Create alternative rewarding habits (e.g. calling a friend, going
