Regular physical activity is key to good cardiovascular health. A minimum of 30 minutes per day of moderate physical activity, plus a couple periods of more vigorous activity per week, will help your heart and lungs stay strong and healthy. Research suggests that mod-erate-intensity, low-impact activity, such as yoga, fast walking, dancing, cycling, swimming, tai chi, pilates, bowling and aqua aerobics are just as effective as high-impact activity, such as running, in lowering the risk of heart disease.

Nutrition has powerful effects to create disease or protect against disease. However, the majority of us are still confused about what a healthy diet is to improve our health. A diet high in vegetables and fruit can reduce your risk. Reducing fast food and sugary drinks will help to lower your risk of heart disease. Eating well doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Heart Niagara can teach you the basics of healthy and delicious eating through our Cooking for a Healthier You classes.

It is well established that smoking causes heart disease and cancer. Quitting smoking can be one of the most dramatic improvements you can make for your health. Research says no one wants to get cancer, lung disease or both. Research also shows that most people try to quit smoking several times before they succeed. If a relapse happens, think of it as practice for the next time you try to quit. Don’t give up your efforts if you fail to stay quit.

The consequences of sudden cardiac arrest can be dire and every minute counts. Do you have the skills and confidence to save a life? What if it is a loved one who goes into cardiac emergency? School, workplace, and community placements of 500 plus automated external defibrillators (AEDS) throughout the region, have made Niagara a safer place to live. Heart Niagara is here to help; find out about CPR and AED training.

Grade 5 – Growing Healthy Kids by integrating curriculum and disease prevention The grade 5 program heart health assessment includes a health questionnaire and measurements of each student’s height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, and non-fasting cholesterol. Following the assessment there is a heart health presentation and CPR/AED edu-cation. On Heart Health Day the students receive a take-home sheet with their results. Parents receive a letter with their child’s results. Three weeks after the Heart Health Day, Heart Niagara will return to the school to do a Follow-up Day that includes a fasting cholesterol test where grade 5 students, their parents, and teachers can come in for a follow-up heart health assessment and breakfast, provided by Heart Niagara.

Grade 7 – its upgradedIn 2013 the Grade 7 Healthy Heart Schools’ Program expanded services to include height/weight/waist circumference, blood pressure and self reported questionnaire on lifestyle. Students complete family history questionnaire with their parent and receive CPR and AED trainingto increase awareness of AED’s placed in elementary schools in 2014.

Grade 9 – reaching 30 secondary schoolsThe Grade 9 component of the Healthy Heart Schools’ Program has been in continuous operation since 1987. In the 2012-13 school year over 3,800 students participated regionally. Of the students assessed, over 50% already have at least one risk factor for heart disease including 6% with high cholesterol, 7% for obesity, 5% for positive family history, 46% are not physically active enough, and 1.8% have high blood pressure.

Research – making a differenceIn the past year results from the Healthy Heart Schools’ Program have been published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine (NEJM) and the Journal of Hypertension.

The Healthy Heart Schools’ Program is made possible by the partnerships Heart Niagara has with Niagara school boards, community and corporate donations, nurse practitioner funding from the Ministry of Health, and, by research funding from the CIHRand Cardiovascular Clinical Research Unit at SickKids.

The Pediatric Cardiovascular Risk Guidelines reinforce this approach and provide targets to achieve.

Each year Heart Niagara works with Niagara Region elementary and secondary teachers to educate over 8,000 students on healthy choices and strategies to prevent heart disease as they grow up.

The Healthy Heart Schools’ Program engages students, families

and health care management of the health issues identified.

Cardiovascular Disease remains the most significant health problem for Western countries in terms of mortality, morbidity and financial costs to health care systems. In Canada, the direct and indirect costs amount to $20 billion a year which equates to $300 million a year for the Niagara Region. The potential for a positive impact on these figures is enormous. Heart Niagara placed the latest in the line of tools developed to combat sudden death in a public setting. Time is of the essence in combating sudden cardiac death. CPR alone isn’t enough. Most victims are in a condition called Ventricular Fibrillation. If defibrillated within 3 minutes, survival rates can be as high as 74%. Placing AEDs in those places where any-body can get to them and use them can literally make a difference between life and death. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are being installed in elementary schools and public gathering areas in Niagara the number of community AED’s will exceed 550 by March 31, 2014 All of this is being done to help combat sudden cardiac arrest and increase survival rates.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) claims the lives of 20,000 to 30,000 thousand people in Canada each year. Once every one to two minutes, another victim succumbs suddenly, often without warning. The only known effective treatment of SCA is defibrillation. While the average age of SCA victims is about 65, SCA is unpredictable and can strike anyone, at anytime. There have been SCA victims in Niagara as young as 12.

The only effective treatment for Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) is an electrical shock calleddefibrillation. Defibrillation is an electrical current applied to the chest, to be successful; it should be administered within 3 to 5 minutes after collapse. The electrical current passes through the heart with the goal of stopping the VF and giving an opportunity for the heart’s normal electrical system to take control and pump blood again. After 10 minutes without defibrillation, very few resuscitation attempts are successful. An AED can defibrillate the heart.

What is an AED? The AED is a computerized medical device that can check a person’s heart rhythm. It will recognize a rhythm that requires a shock. And it will advise the rescuer when a shock is needed. The AED uses voice prompts, lights, and messages to tell the rescuer the steps to take. AEDs are very accurate and easy to use. Lay rescuers with a few hours of training can operate an AED safely. There are many different types of AEDs; the same basic steps apply to all AEDs.

changing behaviors that can increase your chances of getting heart disease or stroke. Start with better eating habits, physical activity

and eliminating smoking.
