CONTETS • Heat and internal energy

• Measuring the amount of heat energy

• Thermal energy transfer

Heat and internal energy

HEAT ENERGY INTERNAL ENENRGY

• Measure of the total kinetic energy of atoms and molecules of the substance.

• It is related to the mass.

• Sum of kinetic and potential energy of the substance is its internal energy.

• It is related to thermal energy.

Page 4: Heat energy transfers

What happens when thermal energy is supplied?

• When thermal energy is supplied to a substance. Its

internal kinetic energy increases. The atoms and

molecules in the substance move faster and further.

• When sufficient thermal energy is supplied, there is a

change in state of the substance.

Page 5: Heat energy transfers

Measuring temperature of a substance.

• The temperature of a substance is the average

measure of its kinetic energy

• The temperature of substance is measured by

thermometer.

• The kinetic energy from the substance passes to the

atoms or the molecules from which the

thermometer liquid is made and causes them to

move faster. This expands the liquid in thermometer

tube. And measure the temperature.

Page 6: Heat energy transfers

Measuring temperature of a substance.

• The thermometer measure the average kinetic

energy of the particle heating the bulb and not the

total kinetic energy of all particles in the substance.

Thermal energy transfer • The way in which heat energy transferred is called

thermal energy transfer .There are three ways of

thermal energy transfer:

• Conduction

• Convection

• Radiation
