Mt. Ashland Ski School Ability Guidelines These descriptions are intended to gather students into four general groups. After the initial groups have formed the instructors and students will ski or ride the first several runs together and the instructors may form several ability groups within each category. Beginner Just starting out-- Beginners have never skied or snowboarded

before or have tried once or twice before. Beginners learn about the building blocks of skiing & riding and how to control speed and direction of travel. Beginners learn how to ride the lifts and how to negotiate green circle (easiest) runs within the first few visits to Mt. Ashland.

Novice Can ride a lift and ski or snowboard while controlling speed and

direction of travel on green circle runs. Novices learn different turn shapes and a higher degree of skill refinement while exploring new blue square (more difficult) runs. Novices learn to read terrain and adapt to different pitches. Novices work toward carving turns.

Intermediate Intermediates can carve turns and will learn to make both short

radius and long radius type turns. Intermediates explore the mountain on blue square (more difficult) and black diamond (most difficult) groomed runs. Intermediates also learn to use different techniques for some conditions off the groomed runs.

Advanced Advanced skiers and riders learn how to adapt their technique to

handle steeps, powder, bumps, and all snow conditions. Many specific techniques are explored to expand versatility. Skiers and riders begin to develop their own style that is most efficient for their physical build and athletic ability.

MT. ASHLAND YOUTH PROGRAMS RULES

PARTICIPANTS MUST COMPLY WITH INSTRUCTIONS BY THE GROUP LEADERS, CHAPERONES & MT. ASHLAND EMPLOYEES AT ALL TIMES!

KNOW AND FOLLOW THE “YOUR RESPONSIBILITY CODE”

• Because this is an educational program, students are required to attend their scheduled lessons.

• Stay in control of your skiing/riding. Uncontrolled speed can seriously injure you or others.

• People ahead of you have the right of way, let them know if you intend to pass and on what side.

• Stop in a safe place for you and others. Stop on the side of a run and where you can be seen from above.

• When starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield. • Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment. • Observe signs and warnings; and keep off closed trails. • Know how to use chair lifts safely to help prevent injuries to yourself

and others. • Respect yourself, others, and your surroundings.

READ AND SIGN THE NEXT PAGE FOR YOUR REGISTRATION TO BE ACCEPTED, PLEASE!

MT. ASHLAND YOUTH PROGRAMS RULES ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

• NEVER SKI OR SNOWBOARD ALONE. Never leave another fellow skier/snowboarder alone.

• Have patience and build the foundation of skills/knowledge that you need to keep yourself and others from getting hurt and to become a role model skier/rider.

• Do not ride in areas that you are unfamiliar with. Your instructor can help guide you with recommendations about which areas you are prepared to ski/ride.

• In deep powder snow, take extra precautions. Tree wells can be a death trap. Avoid skiing/snowboarding through trees when deep powder is present. If you have any questions about safety, don’t hesitate to ask a Mt. Ashland employee or Ski Patrol member (Ski Patrol wears jackets with white crosses on the back) for an update on conditions and related safety tips.

• No skiing/riding in the parking lots. • During night skiing, do not ski/ride on unlit trails. If you were to get hurt on a dark

trail, skiers may have a more difficult time finding you soon after learning that you are missing.

• If you and your skiing/riding partner should become lost, do not continue to travel. Construct a simple snow shelter, keep each other warm while conserving energy, and stay put until a rescue team can find you.

• If a chair lift stops, sit quietly: do not jump or swing skis or snowboards. • Follow the instructions of instructors, coaches, and chaperones. • No foul language. • Runaway skis or snowboards are very dangerous. Make sure to ask an instructor or

chaperone how to use leashes and store your skis/snowboards properly to help prevent this from happening. If you witness runaway equipment, shout a warning to keep those below from getting hit by it. Do not try to stop equipment that is already sliding downhill. Keep a close eye on the path of the equipment and make sure to report where you saw the equipment disappear into the woods.

• No roughhousing. Respect other’s property • Any use of drugs, alcohol, or tobacco is grounds for suspension without a refund. • ALL PARTICIPANTS SHOULD CARRY THEIR OWN ACCIDENT INSURANCE Students who violate any of the program rules, depending on the gravity of the infraction, may be warned, or suspended from the program without a refund.
