Overview

The Heian Period started from 794 AD to 1185 AD.

This period was named after the capital city of Heian-Kyo or now known

as Kyoto the Capital of Peace and Tranquillity.

What was life like in the imperial court?

• The court enjoyed a long period of peace and strong political power.

• One of the most influential groups of this period was the aristocratic (a class of persons holding exceptional rank and privileges) Fujiwara family

What was special about the Fujiwara Family?.

• The Fujiwara family were successful by dominating the royal family by marrying female members of the emperors

• Ruling for about 400 years with their offspring’s when they assumed the throne.

• By doing this they could control the political area by being the most important family.

• . Fujiwara courtiers (people who attended the emperor’s court and other royal personage) so Fujiwara courtiers encouraged an aura of sophistication and sensitivity in all of their activities.
