mastery before the tribune of the people. It was a contest which history will not fail torecord ; and some are yet living to tell itsinteresting and thrilling story. Lincoln - Douglas Debate

began In conflict and ended in cooperation. They were in antagonism for more than ageneration over the interpretation of theconstitution, and were united at last when theconstitution itself was assailed. They mightdiffer, as they did, over the meaning ofsome of its provisions, but when the crisiscame they stood together for its inviolabilityand for the inseverability of the union itestablished. The one asserted the right ofslavery under certain conditions to enter theTerritoriesthe other disputed that rightunder any conditions ; but both agreed thatthe slave power should not divide the Union.

    On the 41st Anniversary of

The debate was national and historical. It commanded profound attention. It in-terested all sections. It was watched withthe deepest anxiety by the followers of both.It was read and studied as no other publicdiscussion before or since. It presented thebest of the two conflicting schools of thought. It was epoch-making, and marked an epochin our history. It touched the public con-science. It influenced public thought andpurpose. It made the issue impossible ofescape ; it could be no longer avoided orevaded. It united the friends of liberty, aswell as those of slavery. It hastened the

" irrepressible conflict." It was not the be-ginning of the agitation, but it carried it intothe lives and homes of the Republic, and noissue is ever rightly settled until it is settledthere. It is no little source of satisfactionthat upon the great question presented inthese debates, while Douglas carried theLegislature Lincoln had a majority of thepeople. The torch of liberty was not lighted here,

but it flamed forth with a broader, brighter, bolder light as it was lifted up by the strongarm of Abraham Lincoln.

Sumter was firedon April 1 2th, 1 861. On the 15th of thatmonth Lincoln issued his call for seventy-fivethousand troops. The position of Douglasat this critical juncture was that of a patriot.Without halting or hesitation he alignedhimself upon the side of the NationalGovernment and threw the force of his greatpersonality in support of the Executive.Upon the occasion of his memorable visit toLincoln immediately after the first call for

    words:''April i8th, 1861.

''Senator Douglas called on the Presidentand had an interesting conversation on thepresent condition of the country. The sub-stance of it was^ on thepart ofMr. Douglas^that while he was unalterably opposed to theAdministration in all its political issues^ hewas prepared to fully sustain the Presidentin the exercise of all his constitutional func-tions to preserve the Union^ maintain thegovernment and defend the Federal Capitol.

On the ^ist Anniversary ofA firm policy and prompt action wasnecessary. The Capitol was in danger andmust be defended at all hazards and at anyexpense of men and money. He spoke of thepresent and the future without any referenceto the pastTHe no longer considered party. His sole

concern was for his country. He had nosympathy with our enemies in the Northwho openly or secretly counseled thedissolution of the Union. He was for theflag and for its cause, and the brave men whocarried it had his blessing and pra^^ers. Hispatriotic course was a mighty factor in

molding Union sentiment and in uniting thepatriotism of the country, and should serveas an example of good citizenship and aninspiration to duty.Though Douglas espoused a cause doomed

to defeat, yet his name will be cherished bypatriots everywhere because when the testcame he was found supporting the Govern-ment and marshaling his followers to upholdthe constituted authorities. It is the causewhich lives, and it is the cause which makesthe men identified with it immortal mhistory. Lincoln was the leader of thetriumphant cause. Douglas, though opposed

Theywill live because the Union which was savedand the liberty which was established willendure to perpetuate their names. To Lincoln, who in 1858 was struggling
