Did you know that the first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 to celebrate Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage on the 12th of October? The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities, which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. 40 000 people were in attendance. 2. In the beginning, beer was not available at Oktoberfest. Alcohol could only be purchased and enjoyed outside the venue. 3. Oktoberfest has been cancelled 24 times because of disease and war. In 1854 and 1873, cholera epidemics forced the fest’s postponement. It was also cancelled during the Franco-Prussian War, WWI and WWII. 4. Did you know that Albert Einstein worked at the festival? He was employed as a trainee in his uncle’s electrical company, and the then-owners of the Schottenhamel tent decided that they wanted to be the first to take advantage of electric lighting, which is why Einstein was employed to screw in light bulbs. 5. Despite its name, Oktoberfest actually starts in the third week of September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. #Septemberfest 6. Only six breweries that brew within the Munich city limits are allowed to participate in Oktoberfest: Hofbräuhaus München, Spaten-Franziskaner-Bräu, Paulaner Bräu, Löwenbräu, Hacker-Pschorr-Bräu and Augustiner Bräu. 7. The mugs themselves are hot items at Oktoberfest. Security guards annually recover approximately 150 000 from would-be souvenir hunters. Many are not recovered: The Hofbräu tent alone averages 35 000 missing each year. The fine for stealing a souvenir mug is R600. 8. Glass steins were late to the party: It wasn’t until 1892 that beer was served in glass mugs. Traditional beer steins were made of stone and later metal, and while some of those are still used, they are far outnumbered by their modern glass cousins. 9. You can’t start drinking until the mayor says so. Since 1950, the festivities only begin when, at noon, twelve guns sound a salute and the mayor cracks open the first beer barrel, yelling “O’ zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!” in the Bavarian dialect). The mayor then hands the first beer to the Minister-President of the State of Bavaria. 10. In November of 2008, Bavarian waitress Anita Schwartz broke the record for most beer steins carried at once. Schwartz balanced 19 full beer steins—5 in each hand, and 9 positioned on top of these—and walked 40 meters without spilling. 100 000 SEATS IN THE FESTIVAL HALLS AVERAGE STATS FOR OKTOBERFEST 6.2 MILLION VISITORS ABOUT 980 SEATED TOILETS AND MORE THAN 878 METERS OF URINALS 83 telephones for local and international credit cards Chickens: 521 872 Pork sausages: 284 506 Fish: 38 650 kg Pork knuckles: 58 446 Oxen: 104 6 940 600 LITRES OF BEER CONSUMED Sources: http://www.foodrepublic.com, http://nbyc.us/Oktoberfest-Fun-Facts.php, http://www.oktoberfest.net/ PLASCON NUROOF COOL 20LTR STANDARD COLOURS PLASCON MICATEX 20LTR STANDARD COLOURS R899.00 R695.00 TEL: 021 853 7845 / WWW.BUILDITSTRAND.CO.ZA - C/O BREWERY AND LOWER GORDONS BAY ROAD, STRAND. As the first days of summer are fast approaching, taking extra care of your skin becomes even more important. This is especially essential because your skin is the “mirror of your body, which strongly reflects your inner state and body needs”.

Did you know that your daily nutrition affects your skin condition? In the case of healthy nutrition, you will notice smooth, moist, fresh and vital skin. On the other hand, poor nutrition and the lack of essential nutrients lead to a pale, rough, dehydrated and irritated skin.

And during summer’s high temperatures and humidity, you should take extra care of our skin in order to stay fresh, healthy and free of blemishes. The attention you give your skin is even more important, when you are exposed to the sun.SUN RAYS BECOME EXTREMELY DESTRUCTIVE WHEN:• The skin is exposed to the sun

for long periods. • The skin is exposed to the sun

between 10am and 2pm• When the skin is dehydrated and in

need of water (in case you are not drinking enough water)

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR YOU TO KEEP YOUR SKIN LOOKING FRESH THIS SUMMER:• Drink enough water for a healthy

body and skin (8 glasses of water daily, besides juices or other fluids).

INCREASEArt increases whole brain integration, development and thinking: art strengthens focus

and increases attention, it develops hand-eye-coordination, requires practice and strategic thinking. No part of the brain being left behind in practicing art!

ALLOWArt allows and encourages freedom of creative expression: Creativity, a lifelong skill to be

used in everyday situations. Creative children are more curious and passionate about knowing more, eager in finding more than one solution to the same problem.

BUILDThrough art confidence in creative ability are built. Art teaches risk taking, learning from

one’s mistakes, and being open to other possibilities. It build’s self-esteem and increases motivation. The artist often finding himself surprised in own creation and ability to create.

CREATEArt creates opportunity for children to experience, explore, discover and think without fear

of judgement or correction. It develops a willingness to explore what has not existed before.

NURTUREArt Nurtures: Art opens the heart and mind to possibilities and fuels the imagination. Art

creates a platform to nurture the love for creation and creating.

• Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially those which are rich in vitamin C, which plays a major role in keeping the skin looking healthy. Eat more oranges, melon, broccoli, and sweet pepper.

• Avoid highly salted foods, and avoid adding extra salt to your food; high salt intake leads to water retention and bloating (in particular your hands and feet), especially if you are not drinking enough water.

• Don’t get exposed to direct sunlight, especially at peak hours. Make sure that you apply sun screen, even if you only get exposed to the sun for a short period.

Take care and enjoy summer funJust because there are so many things you need to remember and follow doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t go out and enjoy yourself during summer. It is one of the most active times of the year and can provide you with a good boost of energy while keeping you entertained. So, don’t worry, get your summer stuff out and get set for season of fun, as long as you keep your skin healthy and fine.

YOU WILL NEED:• Ceramic or porcelain crockery• Stamp• Ink and pad• CPG (Ceramic, Porcelain, Glass) Podge

The crockery used in this DIY was bought on sale for next to nothing and combined with a favourite crown stamp, they are going to revolutionize our dinner parties!

1. Simply dab your stamp on the ink pad and test on paper to see if you need to dab more or less ink on it to get the desired effect.

By: Germarie Bruwer and Margaux Tait from Homeology.co.za

For a lovely and very easy DIY, why not personalize your crockery with a stamp or monogram?

Delivered directly to

2. Place the stamp in the section you want to stamp and try not to move it around while applying pressure on it. On glazed surfaces this is tricky but if you’re gentle you will get it done without difficulty. Don’t stress if you have a bit missing on a little section or get it smudged – the overall look will be slightly distressed and simply adds to the charm of the piece.

3. After it has dried properly you can glaze it with a couple of layers podge, making sure it dries thoroughly between layers. Bake your bowl, plate or mug for 60 minutes on 90 degrees Celsius with the door of the oven slightly open. Different makes of glaze have different baking requirements so be sure to read the instruction carefully. We were truly thrilled by the final result – now you give it a go!

Laerskool Hendrik Louw

This has been a 2 year project. In 2013 we approached the Lotto to donate funds to our school so that we could enrich the lives of our learners, staff and parents. The initiative came about as learners today do not play or do enough physical activity. Hendrik

Louw Primary School wanted to expose more learners to fun training exercises during Life Orientation periods. We designed a unique conditioning circuit, which can be used for learners aged 10-18 years old and adults. It is a one of a kind in the

Helderberg basin. All equipment is designed to use own body-weight and is fantastic for in-season and pre-season training for all sports. It is also used during our Life Orientation periods during the school day.

I Made a Difference - I went MAD“We had to do a MAD project for We Care Week. We divided into groups of 4 to 5 learners. We started our MAD project by visiting the SPCA. We wanted to show the people at the SPCA that we appreciate what they do, so we gave them a lovely sponge cake, and for the dogs we took canned and dry

food and some new feeding bowls. The staff was very friendly. We took the dogs for a walk. This was my first visit to the SPCA and even though the dogs were clearly well cared for, it broke my heart to see that they are not part of a loving family.” – Kianne Lubbe (gr. 7A).

Gaming

THE LAST OF US REMASTEREDThe Last of Us is the sort of game that only comes along once or twice a console generation. Its combination of subtle, crushingly-earnest storytelling and gritty action survival gameplay makes it a game you’re not likely to forget--and if there’s just one game you absolutely must play on your PS4, it’s The Last of Us Remastered.

This post-apocalyptic tale tasks Joel, a man hardened by tragedy, with escorting a 14-year-old girl named Ellie clear across what remains of America. Most of the world’s population has been transformed into genuinely terrifying zombie-things, and the pair must sneak, fight, and run their way past the many dangers that populate their journey. The slow-burn action gameplay is often uncomfortably tense, forcing you to think about and adapt to each enemy encounter.

BATTLEFIELD 4No doubt about it, Battlefield 4 on the PS4 is hands-

down one of the best ways to experience this absolutely thrilling multiplayer shooter. The visuals look roughly a billion times cleaner, which has a direct effect on the amount of enjoyment you’ll derive from playing it. Few things are as exhilarating as fighting in massive battles with a total of 64 players, watching soldiers duke it out in the streets while tanks hurl shells at anything that moves. The environmental destruction is more impressive than ever, the battles are tense, and even the single-player campaign has been greatly improved in comparison to the tragedy that was Battlefield 3’s solo offering. If you’re planning on playing Battlefield 4 on consoles, go PS4 or bust.

TOMB RAIDER: DEFINITIVE EDITION

The game takes you through Lara’s first desperate, life-or-death adventure in the early days of her tomb-raiding career. You’ll watch Lara transform from a scared, lost historian to a brutal, do-what-it takes survivor plunging into ancient ruins, crafting makeshift weapons, and scaling impassable cliffs. How do you make a great game even better? Why, give it a complete graphical overhaul, of course. The Definitive Edition does just that, as it offers a revamped, more detailed Lara model, adds new environmental elements to enhance the island’s visual storytelling, and vastly improves the lighting effects to the point you see every raindrop in the sky light up from a flash of lightning.

ASSASSIN’S CREED 4: BLACK FLAG

We weren’t too sure what to think when we heard that the Assassin’s Creed franchise would be heading to the high seas in a pirate-filled adventure. What we definitely didn’t expect, though, was for our Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag review to call it the best AC yet. Seriously, it’s that good. The land combat is as strong as ever, and features some of the most interesting outdoor locations we’ve explored in the series--but it’s really the open ocean where AC4 is at its best.

FINAL FANTASY 14: A REALM REBORN

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn captures a lot of what we love about the franchise: It’s got a great story, deep RPG combat and progression. And, despite it being an MMO, which are typically overly complex, it’s a game that plays quite well with a controller. Sure, it’ll take some getting used to, and yes, FF14: ARR is a bit overwhelming at first. But onceyou do, and once you get acclimated to the controls, you’ll be partying up with others to take down towering raid bosses (Titan, anyone?) in no time. Do be warned, however: because of the constantly-evolving nature of this MMO, you will have to pony up a monthly subscription fee to play it. Worth it? You bet.

Somerset College Fair Well At Moorreesburg Tennis TournamentEarlier this month, Somerset College participated in the Dirkie Uys Doubles and Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament in Moorreesburg. This is the second year College have participated in this tournament. There were ten schools who participated in the tournament and in their pool the College had to play Durbanville High School, Paarl Gymnasium, Piketberg High School and Bredasdorp High School. After losing the first match against Durbanville, (the eventual runners-up at the Tournament), College scored convincing victories over the remaining schools in their pool.

This put College in second position which resulted in them playing against Hugenote High School from Wellington to determine the third and fourth positions. This match was a very close and nerve-racking encounter, but the College players pulled out all the stops and eventually walked off the court the winners, finishing the tournament in third position. The tennis played in Moorreesburg provided good training for the players who will be representing the College in KZN at the annual Hilton / St Anne’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles Tournament at the end of September.
