HELLO SOUTHERN GUILD

Following on the highly successful Monstera Deliciosa by Porky Hefer, Southern Guild brings a group exhibition of equally

tantalising design product to its Cape Town gallery. Graphica introduces some collectible design pieces not yet seen in South Africa, despite having been exhibited by the gallery

at international fairs such as Design Miami in both Basel and Miami, and Design Days Dubai.

‘Graphica is a visual feast of dynamic silhouettes and exquisite surface detailling,’ explains Southern Guild founder Trevyn McGowan. A Wiid Design bench hand-drawn by Ceramic

Matters to resemble a tattoo, the Kassena Isibheqe cabinet and writing desk by Dokter and Misses, referencing a modern-day script to unite African languages, and Madoda Fani ceramic

vessels decorated with armour-like patterning are some of the pieces to look out for in this exhibition.

‘There’s a strong African aesthetic to these works,’ adds partner Julian McGowan, ‘and visitors can expect this to be

complemented by a dramatic reworking of the gallery space.’ Expect newly painted, moody walls and dark finishes.

Says Trevyn: ‘Southern Guild is forging ahead with repositioning design work as investment pieces in this country. In the same

way that art is collected by top buyers and museums, our South African designers are beginning to make waves, with collectors

understanding the global significance of Africa and its designer-makers.’ Southern Guild products have recently sold for record prices at Christie’s London’s annual design auction, are currently on show at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design

Museum’s ‘Beauty – Cooper Hewitt Design Triennale’ in New York, and have been acquired by Australia’s National Gallery of Victoria, confirming that South African designers are

being sought by some of the biggest collectors in the world.

Graphica artists include: Brett Murray, Bronze Age, Daniella Mooney, David Krynauw, Dokter and Misses, Driaan Claassen,

Justine Mahoney, Laurie Wiid van Heerden with Ceramic Matters, Madoda Fani, Porky Hefer, Rodan Kane Hart

and Xandre Kriel, amongst others.

DISTRICT SIX – KANALA

On the 11th February 1966 District Six was declared a white group area. Over 60,000 people were relocated. A way of life was destroyed. Fifty years have passed and today hardly anything remains of what was once a thriving, densely populated, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural community.

The Fugard Theatre, located in District Six, will pay homage to what was once District Six – the place and its people.

The Fugard Theatre, from 2 Feb, Tickets R130 - R220 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mob

SWEENEY TODD

This musical thriller by American theatrical genius, Stephen Sondheim, features one of the greatest musical theatre scores ever written. It tells the strange tale of Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, who murders his clients with a straight razor while they lean back in his barber chair, and shuttles the bodies down to his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, who turns them into much sought-after meat pies. What drives a man to this sort of extreme? What tragedy lies in his dark and mysterious past? This gripping, often comical musical features such classic songs as `Pretty Women`, `Johanna`, `Not While I`m Around`, `By The Sea` and `A Little Priest`.

Theatre on the Bay, Till 9 April, Tickets R125 - R350 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi.

WOZA ALBERT

Woza Albert looks at a wide range of characters in South Africa at the beginning of the 1980s. It attacks the pass laws that prevented Black people from moving freely at the time. The production uses the metaphor of Morena (Jesus) to show what would happen if he came back to South Africa during Apartheid. Would he like what he saw? And if he saw the atrocities of the time then why would he not do anything about them?

3T, MASON NOISE, BLACKBYRD, FOUR

3T are part of the celebrated Jackson family tree. As nephews of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, and sons of Tito, the second eldest Jackson brother, and the late Delores Jackson, they have inherited the ultimate pop music pedigree. With over a million copies of their debut album “Brotherhood” sold to date, the trio have delivered on their innate musical promise and family heritage.

Mason Noise: Whether it’s the excitement of remembering his powerful performance on X Factor UK, or respect for the way he stood up to the once almighty Simon Cowell, Mason Noise has become to many an inspiration, an icon, a hero. BlackByrd, is one of South Africa’s top recording bands, having successfully crossed over into both the English and Afrikaans Market, with a record number of 7 number 1 singles after their debut album, “Strong” reaching Gold status.

Four: The winners of the first ever X Factor South Africa, we are three guys in a group called FOUR, because you are the fourth member! From the mother city, Cape Town, we are a new act with plans to hit the industry with a bang. Inspired by both House and Pop music, we hope to create something the SA music scene has never seen, becoming a house hold name as South Africa’s first boyband!

THE POWER STRUGGLE

A World First Live Comedy Concept Production.

Nik Rabinowitz is The Power Struggler, who takes his audience on an insightful and hilarious journey across the History of Power through the ages.

The story starts explosively, some 13.798 billion years ago with a rather Powerful Bang. 13 billion years later, the Laws of Physics are still a bit vague about what happened that night. All they know is they started with a singularity, and the next thing they know, there’s a brand new baby cosmos, running around being unruly and ineffable.

Power Struggle is more than a Comedy Show, it is a Sustainability Consciousness Shifter. 50% of the production will be run on renewable energy. Lighting rigs will powered by Bio-Fuels Generators – the production will capture solar and other renewable power sources to operate the on stage gear. Audience members will see first-hand that how we think about our Power is no longer someone else’s problem…and maybe it never was.

JIMMY CARR FUNNY BUSINESS

Known for his signature laugh, deadpan delivery, dark humour, and use of edgy one-liners. Jimmy has been described as, `The hardest working man in comedy`.

Let`s face the facts, it is not that impressive. It`s like being the `Tallest Dwarf` or the `Healthiest Scotsman`. It really is not that big a deal.

`Funny Business` is Jimmy`s brand new stand up show. Come for the witty and incisive musings on the human condition; stay for the gags.

LOVE FACTUALLY

The star of the hit show, DEFENDING THE CAVEMAN, has decided that after 947 performances of the record-breaking comedy, it’s time to take a fresh look at relationships in 2016…

With a comic, honest and sometimes even touching look at couples, our Caveman, Committie, will continue to explore the mad differences between men and women, the quirks and foibles of marriage and dating and will even try to finally provide the right answers to those loaded questions, “Do you think I look fat?”, “Are you listening to me?” and “Would you prefer to go to the cricket or spend the day with me and my mom!?!”

In Love Factually our every-man hero also investigates everything from Tinder and text breakups, online attractions and detractions, surviving as a post-modern, metro-quasi-dexi-semi-multi-mano-sexual, to exploring single vs mingle, the apparent gift of having children and the supposed burden of family… If you enjoyed DEFENDING THE CAVEMAN you’re going to love this fresh take on why it’s ok for men and women to be so different.

Theatre on the Bay, 13 Apr - 14 May, Tickets R120 - R180 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi.

SLAVE LODGE

The Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town.

The many names of the building over three centuries – Slave Lodge, Government Offices Building, Old Supreme Court, and SA Cultural History Museum – reflect the long and rich history of the building.

In 1998 this museum was renamed the Slave Lodge. Under the umbrella theme, ‘From human wrongs to human rights’, exhibitions on the lower level of this museum explore the long history of slavery in South Africa.

Through our changing, temporary exhibitions we address issues around and raise awareness of human rights.

COOL-RUNNINGS

It’s the summer version of the thrilling winter sport. The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family.

How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go.

Cool-Runnings, Toboggan Family Park lies just 25km from Cape Town city centre. Take the N1 towards Paarl, take Exit 23 at the R302 Durban Road/Willem van Schoor Ave. (off ramp is opposite Toys’R’us™.) Then turn left at the top into Willem van Schoor Ave. First set of traffic lights left again into Mispel Road. At the intersection with Carl Cronje Drive proceed straight into Cool-Runnings entrance which leads you to the public parking facilities.

ART IN THE GARDEN AT KIRSTENBOSCH NBG

Extinction! Dinosaurs, and Cycads? is a new exhibition in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

It features nine dinosaur sculptures in tin by David Huni, a young Zimbabwean artist. They are life-size and anatomically correct and are placed in amongst the cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre.

The exhibition will highlight the fact that many of South Africa’s cycads are on the brink of extinction, and could soon face the same fate as the dinosaurs, but it is a crisis caused not by an asteroid impact but almost entirely by mankind. The aim of the exhibition is to raise awareness about the threats faced by cycads, and to increase public participation and support for cycad conservation and research.

DIAMOND

Diamonds have been associated with purity, strength, wealth, virtue, power and most importantly love. Today, an appreciation for diamonds has evolved, not to only appreciate any diamond, but to appreciate a truly rare diamond - The Diamond Works diamond. The Diamond Works Institute is considered a true diamond and jewellery expert. Established in 2001, it has evolved to be one of the most popular diamond facilities in Southern Africa.

TANZANITE

The Diamond Works Institute extends its expertise in delineation of Tanzanite in our unique Tanzanite Boutique. This rare stone represents the essence of Africa, and we whisper the tales of this stone’s journey from the ground to the showroom. Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism; appearing alternately sapphire blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientation. This blue mystical gem has earned a reputation for possessing magical powers. It is thought that it has the power to elevate the bearer’s mood and release them from poor habits or addictions. It is also believed, that tanzanite is able to restore spiritual balance and good fortune. Our Cape Town facility demonstrates the science of tanzanite polishing and the craft of transforming a tanzanite crystal to a cut stone.

WE’VE SEENHello Cape Town got to sit down with our very own home-grown superstar Zander Tyler - better known by his stage name Jack Parow! Over a delish cuppa and lunch, he had this to say:

We all ask the obvious question – where did the hat come from? However what I want to know, is why the hat? There are so many other things you can use as your trademark?*Chuckles* Well, I always wear a cap - that’s the first thing. Secondly, I’m really into cartoon characters and toys and whatnot, so it actually came out of that. I wanted to be this cartoon character. *Smiles* Fashions always change but caps always stay the same. I mean, I’ve been wearing caps since I was a baby! *Laughs* I always got into trouble with my friend’s granny because she had such a big issue with people wearing caps in the house. She always used to kak me out and I supposed that added to my rebellious nature and underlying tone in my music. I’m always being told that I’m doing something wrong. *chuckles* So anyway, I was with my mates and we put a piece of paper on the peak and looked funny – like a cartoon - and we liked it. To be honest, the cap wasn’t supposed to be the eye-catching statement, I had initially made a newspaper suit. I completely worked that cap and hence my trademark!

What do you define as ZEF? What genre would you place your music in? Well my definition I suppose is connected to someone ‘common’ or ‘pale’. It’s more like your white lower/middle class folk. I mean where ZEF originated from was the name of the Ford Zephyr car in the 60s/70s. It was a derogatory term to refer to working class whites. As I live behind ‘boerewors gordyn’, so it just fell into our laps! *chuckles* It is just easy to put us in a predetermined category. I can’t put us a specific genre because we aren’t completely rap, or hip hop, or rock because we are far from that. We are mixture of so many styles, from boere music to rock to metal, hip hop to dance. I think that’s why I can’t get nominated for awards? I don’t fit in any classification. I did get nominated for ‘Best Hipster’ award at the MK awards which honestly makes no F*^#ing sense! *chuckles* but that’s the way it goes.

You certainly have your own panache and a class of your own! What ‘ingredient’ do you think is most essential in making your sound and style the way it is?I believe singing in Afrikaans sets me apart – it puts me into a much smaller group. I had trouble finding my voice that I’m comfortable with hearing. You know when you listen to your voice on an answering machine? That vibe. After practising with many different types of tones, I found I have, as they say in Afrikaans a ‘neel’ sounding voice *laughs* Its sounds like I’m complaining *laughs* I

liked it so I honed around that. I have so many influences to my music, so I created my own unique style by amalgamating them all into one. It’s important to be your own musician, to have your own style you know? Instead of trying to be like, say, American rappers with American accents? It’s harder to succeed trying to be somebody else. Someone once told me, when you on the stage, everyone is there just for you and so you need to bring them into your world and make it so that they don’t want to leave it. Make it that they want to come back to it because they can’t find it anywhere else.

How would you describe the music scene of SA in comparison to the international crowd?Ag, I think it’s a little all over the place. The main issue is that there are too many venues and so it spreads audience out too thin so then venues don’t make money and neither do musicians. For example, in America they will have 5 venues which will be used and open and shut throughout the year. It works and everyone makes money. It sad because here, there is so much talent with no real place to properly show case it all. We are currently working on plans to bring an online channel to give a platform to the people and get the public to invest in it and support our guys. The aim is to reinvigorate. What we ultimately need is unification of musicians and artists.

What are words you live by?“Don’t take yourself too seriously and always remember to have fun”

Say you woke up one morning and you were no longer able to sing - What else would you do? Are you qualified for anything else?I have always said I want to be a mechanic. Which sounds like something no one would say, but I’m REALLY into vintage 60s/70s cars. If you want to own a car like that, you need to be able to fix a car like that. So I think that would be my choice. If I get time again, I will be happy to get into that.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?Joh. Let me think. Jis I have been in so much trouble in my life *laughs* I think the most amount of trouble I have ever gotten into is actually at the moment. I am very outspoken and a fight for what I believe in and so I get a lot of anger and hatred from some people. I fight for liberation and openness which is difficult in South Africa where everyone seems to be put into boxes. It truly saddens me. We have an amazing country and amazing people. I believe we need to work together to make a cool country, and stop concerning ourselves with these stereotypes. We are all just people. Awesome South Africans. - TLR

CENTURY CITY CONFERENCE CENTRE AND HOTEL IS EXACTLY WHAT CAPE TOWN NEEDED

The highly anticipated Century City Conference Centre (CCCC) and Hotel has been lauded as the best new asset the Western Cape hospitality industry has seen in over a decade. This now offers the perfect opportunity to increase the number of conferences and events to the region. The CCCC presents event organisers with the unique prospect of a conference facility which can accommodate up to 1200 delegates in one venue and up to 1900 people in total, across twenty configurations of halls and meeting rooms. That puts the CCCC in the perfect position to fill the gap between small business conferences to large volume events. The Century City Conference Centre (CCCC) and Hotel was officially opened in mid-February by the Minister of Economic Opportunities in the Western Cape, Alan Winde.

Said to be the largest private equity investment by an unlisted company - at a total cost of R1billion - the Conference Centre has been developed by the Rabie Property Group, as a result of the investor’s unwavering faith in the tourism sector. This mixed-use development comprises of the Century City Conference Centre, a 125 room hotel, offices, apartments and restaurants all situated around an integral Square, which forms the new commercial and hospitality hub of Century City.

According to Leon Cohen, Managing Director of Rabie Property Group, the Conference Centre and Hotel was built in response to the market demand and is designed to become the epicentre of Cape Town’s third largest commercial district. The Bridgewater

precinct is currently home to more than 500 businesses occupying over 260 000m². The new development has resulted in Century City overtaking Cape Town CBD’s ratio of office space to hotel rooms. The CCCC and hotel will further enhance revenue streams to small businesses in the area as a result of additional foot fall, as well as add value to blue chip corporates in the area.

Joint CEOs Glyn Taylor and Gary Koetser have travelled the globe extensively to promote this world-class facility. They have been received with huge interest and excitement at annual trade shows such as IMEX in Frankfurt and Las Vegas, Incentive Business Travel (IBTM), Meetings Expo Africa, the World Travel Market Expo (WTM) and Tourism Indaba.

“It is encouraging to see that the Western Cape is clearly seen not only as one of the World’s leading leisure destinations, but as a forerunner for business travel globally,” says Koetser.

The Century City Conference Centre will not only fill a gap in the market, but also further cement Cape Town’s position as one of the world’s most sought-after conference destinations. It offers flexible configurations and its multi-function venues, including a large pre-assembly area, are geared for workshops, banqueting, exhibitions, product launches “conflexes”, and the like.

Taylor estimates the new conference centre will host in excess of 72 000 delegates in its first year alone.

volatile creatures on safari. The Cape leopardhas long been an inhabitant of the vastmountain ranges, but its solitary and nocturnalhabits make it an elusive creature. The searchfor the Big 5 is the highlight of many safaris, and Inverdoorn delivers a once-in-a-lifetime experience searching for these famous creatures.

BOULDERS PENGUIN COLONY

Boulders Penguin Colony in Simons Town is home to a unique and endangered land-based colony of African Penguins. This colony is one of only a few in the world, and the site has become famous and a popular international tourist destination.

The Boulders section of Table Mountain National Park consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks were built as a measure to allow for viewing of these wonderful birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area.

This beach is ideal for children as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Don’t touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose.

CAPE FUR SEAL

Duiker Island is a Cape Fur Seal and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of seals and many birds such as the Cape Cormorant, the Bank Cormorants, Black Back Gulls, Kelp Gulls and Hartlaub Gulls. It is illegal to go onto the island. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they

INVERDOORN

Inverdoorn Game Reserve and Iziba Safari Lodge is located in the Ceres Karoo, just two and a half hours from Cape Town. Stretching across 10 000 hectares, Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah.

Driving over the well-beaten track that winds through the reserve, you may come across any number of animals. Making their way through the succulent plant life that characterises the floral diversity of the Karoo, you will find a myriad of antelope such as kudu, eland, impala, springbok and gemsbok. You will be captivated by the distinct markings of the zebra and the graceful gait of the giraffe, while the brute power of the buffalo and the majestic beauty of the Cape Barbary lion will astound you.Perched atop a safari vehicle or standing in a lookout point within the heart of the reserve you will be lost in the awesome vastness which surrounds you, as well as the solitude of the Karoo. Rangers add a rich element of humour and storytelling to the safari with anecdotes of the animals, wildlife facts and, most importantly, the threats facing many species today.

At the safari lodge guest have the opportunity to unwind, and may even see the cheetahs going on daily walks with their handlers. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.

In 2012 Inverdoorn became home to the Big 5. Since its inception, the reserve has re-introduced many of the members into the region through their conservation efforts. The male lion was rescued from trophy hunting, while rhinos have a long history at the reserve, with their conservation led by RhinoProtect. This organisation developed a horn treatment to ward off poachers, and established an orphanage for calves victimised by poaching. Free-roaming elephants are also back, having been eradicated from the area for 150 years.

do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber.

Breeding is a continuous cycle and takes place in November/December in breeding colonies around the coastline of South Africa and Namibia. After fertilization there is a dormant period of 4 months and thereafter development continues, making the active gestation period 8 months. The pups are then born in late November early December. A cow usually only has one pup at a time when she reaches the breeding age which is 4-5 years old. She knows her pup by its smell and call and she will only mother her own offspring. Pups are entirely dependent on milk for the first 6 months. They are weaned between 8-10 months old.

They grow quickly and start to swim at 6 weeks old. By about 7 months they can spend 2-3 days at sea on their own and can already swim long distances. It has been noted that tagged seals have swum from Cape Town to Cape Cross in Namibia, a distance of 1600 kms at the age of 8 months. The Cape Fur Seal dives to a depth of 36m on average but diving abilities varies between species. Their ears and nostrils close tightly when they dive and they cannot breathe underwater. Even while sleeping in the water they have to surface to breathe, every 10-15 minutes for young ones and 30 minutes for the adults. Drumbeat Charters from Hout Bay Harbour cruise to Duiker Island between 4-6 time a day and you can get there by using MyCiti bus or the City Sightseeing red, double decker busses of the mini peninsula tour.

Reservation is no necessary but if you’d like to check the option off a private cruise or more details see: www.drumbeatcharters.co.za or call 021 - 791 4441

GREAT WHITE SHARK

For adventurous travellers, great white shark cage diving is a must! Day trips are offered by companies in Gansbaai, or boats leave from Simon’s Town.

Great White sharks are some of Cape Town’s most famous and respected marine inhabitants. Love them or fear them, getting up close and personal with a great white is one of the most adrenaline-fueled experiences you can encounter while visiting the Cape.

It is estimated that there are only about 5 000 great white sharks left in the oceans and the Kleinbaai and Gansbaai coastline of the Western Cape has the greatest concentration of these predators. The best time for viewing these beasts is between June and September.

SHARK CAGE DIVING: The funds raised from great white experiences and tours in Cape Town are helping scientist learn more about their behaviour and funding shark research in the Cape.

Most shark experiences happen off the coast of Gansbaai or Kleinbaai, two hours outside of Cape Town. Book with one of our accredited tour partners to make sure you’re in the right place at the right time and get face-to-face with the ocean’s greatest predator.

water’s dark shadows, and jump with great speed and agility to ‘catch’ their prey above the surface. These trips are scheduled for early mornings whilst the sun is rising which is when the sharks are most active. Breaching trips

can be arranged with or without shark cage diving afterwards.

Art & Dance Gallery 301

As a young girl I followed in my father’s footsteps and became a dental hygienist. I loved it - the medical knowledge and sense

of satisfaction that came with it. However, life became very difficult in South Africa and

we immigrated to Australia.

I decided to study Naturopathy - little did I know my whole life would change in an

instant when I discovered the most amazing performance of healing bodywork. This was my turning point: Hawaiian temple massage.

For the next 25 years I pursued this path and began to work internationally,

writing 4 books in the process.

I returned home to Cape Town in 2008, the wild passion & beauty of this country sparked

my artistic career to new heights. At the young age of 60 I am living my dream. I have my own gallery that showcases my works. It is also a venue for private dance classes in which I collaborate with a master Kizomba

dancer, Braulio Faria, and as he dances with his students I paint the action. “To surrender to the music, to the dance, and to feel that

passion flow through you is what the dance art experience is about

TABLE MOUNTAIN

Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New-7Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impres-sive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreci-ate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below.

Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015www.tablemountain.net

KIRSTENBOSCH

There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, land-scaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of TableMountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-win-ning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left.

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE

There are few things as exhilarating as standing at

the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse,

perched precariously high above the swirling

Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at

the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the

next closest landmass, when you look across the icy

seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The

panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally,

because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the

upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the

dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera.

This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against

the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top.

P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think.

BOULDERS BEACH

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose.

Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

ROBBEN ISLAND

There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that

WELLINGTON WINE ROUTE

Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque

mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley

of Wellington, full of surprises and variety,

heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the

western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme

and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by

the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before

Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More

French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was

initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before

travellers, pioneers and adventurersattempted the arduous journey into the

hinterland with their oxen and their wagons.
