s the dog days of summer linger, everyone is looking for activities to occupy their time. The search for the

n e w , the entertaining, and the interesting is as close as a trip to near by Greeneville Tennessee. Greeneville offers much to be discovered and enjoyed for individuals and families alike and all in about a 30 minute drive from your front door.

The town of Greeneville was officially recognized in 1786 mak-ing Greeneville, Tennessee’s second oldest town. It began with a tract of land owned by Robert Kerr and was named for Revo-lutionary War Hero General Nathaniel Greene.

Being one of the earliest settlements, the town has been home to many prominent citizens. Most notable of these are famed frontiersman and statesman David (Davy) Crockett, born in nearby Limestone Tennessee. Presbyterian minister Samuel Doak, founder of many early schools and churches including Tusculum College. Greeneville is also known for being the home and burial place of the 17th President of the United States, Andrew Johnson and is the only town in the United States with statues honoring both sides of the Civil War.

A place steeped in history, there is much to see and experience. A Walk with the President Walking Tour is offered as a glimpse into the history of the town as it was in the time of President Johnson. The town is brought to life in this guided tour that al-lows you to experience the historic architecture of homes and churches while learning of the rich history of the area.

The Dixon Williams Mansion Tour allows you to step back into the past of a home filled with exqui-site antiques and stories of American hero’s. Built by Greeneville’s first postmaster William Dixon for his daughter Catherine, the home hosted many influential historic figures, including three Ameri-can Presidents, Andrew Johnson, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk. Visitors are given the opportu-nity to learn of this home’s incredible history and enjoy it’s restored beauty. The museums of Tusculum College include the President Andrew Johnson Museum and Library, which houses exhibits and personal ar tifacts of the Johnson family as well as President Johnson’s personal library and artifacts of the college. The Doak House Museum exhibits ar tifacts of the founder of Tusculum College, Rev. Samuel Doak and his family, including educational and religious pieces. For information call 423-636-8554

The Andrew Johnson National Historical Site is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. This includes Johnson’s tailor shop at the corner of Depot and College Streets, Johnson’s house located on Main Street, along with The Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. Replicas of the Presi-dent’s bir th home as well as a life size statue are offered for visitors to view. Visitor information can be found by calling 423-638-3551.
