P eople are starting to notice that today’s music is starting to sound a little familiar? Perhaps this is be- cause alternative bands are sounding like the 80’s and 90’s sounds that we have heard in the past. These top ten alternative bands are rocking up the charts. 1. ATLAS GENIUS - Atlas Genius is an alternative rock band from Adelaide, South Australia. Their debut single, “Trojans,” was released on May 4, 2011. The band is currently on their first headline North American tour, which will conclude with the band starting to work on their second album. 2. THE BLACK KEYS – The Black Keys started out slow in the early 2000’s, but quickly became one of the most recognized alt-rock bands of the era. Their latest single “Little Black Submarines” is one of the most played songs of the moment. 3. FUN – This band has really earned this title. Fun is up for a massive six Grammy Awards this year. The band’s latest album, Some Nights, is filled with dramatic strings, colorful horns, keyboards, layered vocals and programmed drums. 4. THE LUMINEERS – This band is most recognized for their popular hit, “Ho Hey.” The band cites a diverse range of influences from Beethoven and Guns N’ Roses to Talking Heads and Bruce Springsteen. 5. MUSE – English rock trio, Muse, is one of the victors of the new alternative scene. Their debut single off the release, “Madness,” is currently No. 1 on Nielsen’s Alternative Rock Radio chart. 6. OF MONSTERS AND MEN – Arriving from Iceland, the six-piece chamber pop outfit, known as Of Monsters and Men, bring a unique blend of intricate indie folk to our radios. 7. PASSION PIT - The band’s new album, Gossamer, features a popular song you may have heard a few times on the radio: “Take a Walk.” 8. SILVERSUN PICKUPS – This group is just getting started. Fans quickly fell in love with their most popular hit, “Panic Switch”, but the trio’s latest single “The Pit” is proving very popular on the charts. 9. LOCAL NATIVES – The band’s 2013 single “Heavy Feet” has topped the Alternative charts. The Local Natives have been mentioned as a “band who knows how to groove.” 10. GROUPLOVE - Grouplove formed out of a friendship between the five members of the band. This friendship lead to some wonderful music that have made the band extremely successful. Grou- plove’s first single, “Colours,” reached number twelve on Modern Rock charts.
