At the Muslim Welfare Centre, we are guided by the belief that service to humanity is service to Allah (God). We are committed to serving those in need, irrespective of religion, nationality, caste or creed.

In Canada, we are involved in the fight against poverty and homelessness and are focused on providing food, healthcare services, culturally-sensitive shelter for women, their children and families in distress, and healthy nutrition to our school children and seniors.

Our international focus involves promoting literacy through our free schools; access to clean water through water exploration projects; and providing relief assistance, including construction of shelters and establishing free medical clinics in countries facing natural disasters.

President’s MessageDear Friends,

I greet you with Peace… Assalamu Alaikum!

By the grace of God, we have successfully completed another productive year! I am very excited to inform you that we have launched a number of new services since last year’s report and they include the Arctic Food Bank in Inuvik - Northwest Territories; Regent Meals – a soup kitchen in downtown Toronto; Meals on Wheels in Hamilton; as well as the expansion into Mississauga of our free medical clinic for the uninsured.

In terms of our existing programs, we have seen significant growth in Project Ramadan - special thanks to our highly motivated partners for the past seven years, the youthful group Project Ramadan and to Islamic Relief Canada for their sponsorship this year. We have more than doubled the Meals on Wheels for Seniors – thanks to Reh’ma Community Services. Our school nutrition program now includes 15 schools across the GTA and our Emergency Shelter & Motel program continues to be recognized for its service to the Durham community.

Internationally, our Support a Child program provided education for over 350 students and we have now surpassed installation of over 300 water wells and hand pumps. The construction of 80 houses and 16 animal shelters, started last year in the flood ravaged village of Qadir Baksh Rind (Pakistan), has been completed thanks to our implementing partner, the International

Development and Relief Foundation, for a job well done. The second phase of this village-building project is about to commence.

I am very excited to inform you that the documentary we were working on to capture a brief history of Muslim Welfare Centre of Toronto and its march forward is now complete and will be released soon. It is aptly titled ‘A Life of Service’ to reflect on the dedication and hard work of its pioneering founders and early volunteers. Even though our founders are no longer with us, their vision and the desire to serve humanity is what keeps all our staff, volunteers, and directors motivated towards serving the needy. We pray that God bless their souls - Ameen.

Finally, I would like to sincerely thank our volunteers and staff for their drive, dedication, passion and expertise. Their tireless efforts are what make this organization move forward. I would also like to thank our Board for their dedication and valuable time. And of course, our sincerest thanks to our committed donors who have supported us throughout the years - this organization would not be here today without their generous contributions.

Regent Meals5 star lunch, restaurant-style While most are still sleeping in on a Sunday morning, lazily drinking coffee or barely awake, volunteers of the Muslim Welfare Centre Regent Meals program have been busy for hours – slicing, dicing, setting tables, and getting the community centre-turned-restaurant ready for the lunch rush.

Launched in October 2014, the Regent Meals lunch service program provides the first no cost, halal Sunday lunch in Regent Park’s Christian Resource Centre. Meals are served restaurant style, with volunteers greeting and seating guests, serving meals directly to their tables, and taking care of the dishes. Under the direction of experienced kitchen staff, dedicated community members gather to prepare nutritious, hearty, hot meals and serve to anyone and everyone who stops by.

By the end of 2014, more than 500 enthusiastic volunteers had spent 2000 hours serving over 3,000 meals to Toronto’s residents. By June 2015, more than 10,000 meals were dished and served – driving engagement between MWC and local agencies,

schools and the community at large.

Second Free Clinic in MississaugaWe are delighted to announce the imminent opening of our second free clinic (the first one is operating in Scarborough since 2009).

We are getting together with Welcome Medical Clinic, an existing free clinic in Mississauga, to extend this service under the Muslim Welfare Centre banner, insha’Allah. The location is on Burnhamthorpe Road just west of Mavis Road.

This clinic will operate once a week, on the same principles as our Scarborough clinic with volunteer licensed medical doctors and nurses providing medical consultation to anyone who does not have any medical coverage, and where possible, free medication as well. Typically, our patients are new immigrants, refugees, visitors and visa students.

RVHS SupportMuslim Welfare Centre recently announced a financial contribution of $50,000 to the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation (RVHSF).

This lead donation will help start the Central East Regional Cardiac Care Program (RCCP) at the RVHS Centenary that is designed to bring world-class care to patients in the Scarborough, Durham, and North East communities.

This program increases access to timely specialized care for patients at high risk of cardiovascular events. This donation will go directly to the training and education of the multi-factorial team which plays an integral role in enhancing capacity for Heart Failure and High Risk patients.

As a pioneer in providing healthcare services to the uninsured, Muslim Welfare Centre is equally proud to support specialized care for patients across the GTA.

MWC DocumentaryIn recognition of over 22 years of charitable work, the centre commissioned a short video documentary which would highlight the pioneering efforts of the founders and dedicated volunteers in establishing Muslim Welfare Centre and its subsequent evolution over two decades of service.

Arctic Food BankMuslim Welfare Centre in the Arctic NorthWhen the Muslim Welfare Centre decides to expand, it takes the concept seriously. That’s why we’ve headed to Canada’s Great White North to set up the Arctic Food Bank in the cold, yet beautiful area known as Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

This new program will serve a vital need in Canada’s north – a population with over 4 times greater food insecurity than the national average.

In collaboration with the Midnight Sun Mosque (Muslim Association of Inuvik, this recently- launched service will provide halal, non-perishable food items and meat to locals, a diverse community of more than 3,500 individuals and families living above the Arctic Circle.

This partnership is a pioneering effort focused on improving food security to Canada’s First people in the Arctic North, and MWC is thrilled to be part of it. We need your support so we can begin closing the gap!

For 22 years, the Halal Food and Essential Items Bank has been the cornerstone of what Muslim Welfare Centre stands for: helping to provide individuals and families with the basic food items needed to assist, and enhance, their daily lives.

Everything from non-perishable canned goods, to halal meat, to clothing, footwear and winter gear, is distributed to MWC’s list of more than 10,000 registrants. 2014 saw more than 11,400 visits from clients at our food banks in Scarborough, Mississauga and Montreal, Quebec.

With a special focus on children and their educational needs, volunteers and staff also come together to prepare more than 145 backpacks for students in junior kindergarten through grade eight across the Greater Toronto Area. Filled with school supplies and tokens, the gifts help put pencils in hands, and smiles on faces.

Our Essential Items banks also provide assistive devices like wheel chairs, walkers, etc., on free, short

term loan to seniors, visitors and other individuals in need. Please contact us to check for availability.

Project Ramadan Food BasketsHelp feed those in need. Creating baskets - building bridges.In its seventh year, the Muslim Welfare Centre’s successful partnership with Project Ramadan is full speed ahead, with no signs of slowing down.

Established in 2009, Project Ramadan began when a local group of students-turned-activists decided to stop talking about making a difference, and instead, make it happen. Capitalizing on the inevitable spirit of community giving that comes about during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the founders

decided to build baskets full of healthy, grocery staples costing the donor only $50. Hundreds of volunteers gather at MWC headquarters each Ramadan, building baskets that are distributed via the Halal Food and Essential Items Bank’s list of more than 10,000 registered community members.

To date, Project Ramadan has raised approximately $374,000 and successfully dispensed more than 7,400 baskets to individuals and families in need, no matter who they are.

juice to the homeless, 52 weeks a year. We’re proud to say that in the history of this 15 year program, not a single day has been missed, thanks to the generosity of the community who make it possible. This means 218,000 meals have been served with success.

In the colder months, blankets, sleeping bag and warm clothes – such as coats, socks, gloves and scarves – are also distributed, helping to take the edge off a cold, Canadian winter day. We thank our partner in this initiative, Reviving the Islamic Spirit (RIS) conference organizers who support this program through their winter coat drive.

Together, we’ve handed out more than 2,400 winter jackets – making a small, but important difference for recipients.

Meals on Wheels for SeniorsDelivering meals- Restoring dignity As the fastest growing age group in the city, Toronto is home to approximately 340,000 citizens over the age of 65. Of these seniors, roughly one in four lives alone, and food insecurity amongst them is steadily increasing.

The Halal Meals on Wheels for Seniors Program addresses the issues of needy seniors in specific city neighborhoods. In partnership with REH’MA Community Services, this new program gives the elderly access to nutritious, culturally-sensitive meals, delivered right to their doorsteps.

A team of certified and talented women prepare the meals that are distributed to 150 seniors twice a week – adding to 15,600 meals each year. This program has seen a significant increase since originally launched with 95 seniors weekly and almost 5,000 meals in the first year. All recipients are from marginalized backgrounds, these women hone their culinary skills while earning to support their families – a true circle of giving.

Emergency ShelterA safe haven for over 11,000 women and children In its 18th year of service, the Muslim Welfare Home has been the sole emergency homeless shelter for women and children in Durham Region. The Muslim Welfare Home has provided shelter to more than 11,000 women and children.

The shelter provides a safe space and comfortable environment for women and families experiencing homelessness. It has 45 beds and provides all the necessities and amenities of daily living in a culturally-sensitive environment.

The Muslim Welfare Home is committed to providing guidance, counselling and housing services to residents of the shelter. Services provided include: Individual and crisis counselling, referrals to community resources and community advocacy, computer lab for employment and housing search, housing support, childcare, psychotherapist for mental health needs and lifeskills workshops.

The Muslim Welfare Home has Outreach Housing Workers & Counsellors on staff. Some of the free and confidential services provided to residents of the shelter include: help with applying for Rent Geared to Income Housing (subsidized housing), assistance with searching, applying and securing market price rentals, advocacy with landlords, community organizations and government programs, help with budgeting and employment search, and assistance in applying for government programs (Ontario Works & ODSP.

The operation of the shelter is supported by the Region of Durham. The Muslim Welfare Home is very appreciative of the support from the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise and Royal LePage Frank Real Estate. They have provided care through tending to the interior and exterior needs of the shelter, along with fundraisers, toy drives and special home cooked meals. As well, the shelter has wonderful support from community agencies and their partnerships and community members who donate in a variety of ways to the shelter.

Public School NutritionNourishing bright minds – Feeding the future Child development and hunger can be a hidden topic in many communities. It often goes unnoticed that 1 in 3 recipients of local food banks are children.

The struggle against hunger and poverty has been a key focus of the Muslim Welfare Centre since its inception. In an effort to support a strong community-based solution, we began sponsoring premium, school-based nutrition programs in 2010. Currently, we are funding breakfast, morning meals, and snack programs for students in high-needs areas across the Greater Toronto Area.

Breakfast, also known as the most important meal of the day, plays a critical role in a student’s development, as the brain and body strongly rely on regular intake of food to function and grow appropriately. Breakfast and morning snack programs provide healthy foods in a safe and caring environment thus ensuring students have a nutritious start to their day.

Through these programs, students learn about making life-long healthier choices and are given culturally- appropriate foods according to Canada’s Food Guide. As well, all meals conform to halal dietary standards.

Muslim Welfare Centre is pleased to work with the Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS), the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) nutrition team, and in particular, the staff and dedicated volunteers in schools whose efforts make this program possible.

Thanks to the ongoing support of our donors, we contribute to nutrition programs in 15 public schools thus providing over 30,000 meals and helping thousands of children start their day a healthier way.

Free Medical ClinicsMaking healthcare accessible to the uninsuredToronto’s diverse and multicultural landscape ensures that those from all countries and backgrounds are welcome to call this city their new home. But for many newcomers, medical coverage can be out of reach. In 2009, MWC established the Free Medical Clinic for the uninsured, a program that remains strong and vital today.

Open weekly and by appointment only, patients are cared for by licensed physicians and nurses who volunteer their time, helping visitors, refugees, international students and new Canadians alike. Most common medicine is generously donated by a local pharmaceutical company.

Almost 400 patients were cared for by the medical team in 2014, and with an expansion to the western Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this year in Mississauga, MWC hopes to help even more individuals in the years ahead. The Clinic is located at 100 McLevin Avenue, Unit 2A, Scarborough, Ontario, M1B 5K1

Al Abbas MussallahMississaugaIn 2009, Muslim Welfare Centre expanded its services in Mississauga with the opening of the Al-Abbas Mussallah (prayer hall), adjacent to our Halal Food and Essential Items Bank.

This instructional facility includes space for basic religious education, a place of worship and as well, it provides access to various counseling services provided by a qualified cleric.

With a capacity of 150 people (men and women), community services include; congregational prayers: daily prayers, Taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, and Eid prayers; Islamic education classes for Children, Quranic recitation for adults, Hifz and tajweed classes for girls, and youth programs among others.

Emergency Motel ProgramIn 2013, the Muslim Welfare Home was entrusted with the Emergency Motel Program by the Region of Durham.

The Emergency Motel Program serves families and individuals experiencing a housing crisis. The eligibility requirements of the program include; women with male children over the age of 13 and individuals with physical disabilities, who are otherwise unable to stay in the Muslim Welfare Home. The program provides a short term stay in a motel in Durham Region.

The families and individuals of the Motel Program are assisted with securing housing, referrals to community resources, applying for government programs and other outreach services.

To date, this program has assisted more than 140 clients.

Support A Child Educating a nation Since 1999, the Muslim Welfare Centre has made a concerted effort to lead the fight against child labour, poverty and illiteracy in third world countries.

Currently, we are running two schools in the slum and underprivileged areas of Karachi, Pakistan. Here, through the generous support of our donors, over 350 children, both girls and boys receive free Primary and Secondary education (from Kindergarten to Grade 10). We provide school aged children with free access to school uniforms, books, stationery, and other tools for success.

Through this program, we also support the families of the students by providing groceries so that the children are not forced to work to supplement the family’s income and to continue their education with us.

As a donor you are providing a chance to end the cycle of child poverty. You are giving them a chance to build strong foundations for a better future.

Disaster ReliefNatural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and tsunamis seem to hit around the world with regularity, and without warning.

While the duration of these events last mere seconds or minutes, the devastation is often irreparable. Every year, communities around the globe experience such devastation, leaving people homeless; injured or disabled; penniless, and with little hope for rebuilding their lives.

Natural disasters take a significant human toll and compel each of us to do our part; to lend a hand; to support each other.

Over the years, Muslim Welfare Centre has responded to the call to help victims of disasters. Our support has been there in Bangladesh; Bosnia; Chile; Haiti; Indonesia; Nepal; Pakistan and the Philippines. Closer to home, we have been in Calgary during the floods and in New Orleans, USA

Village DevelopmentFollowing the massive floods in 2010, Muslim Welfare Centre had committed to rebuilding the entire village of Qadir Baksh Rind (pop. approximately 550) in Sindh-Pakistan, situated near the border with Baluchistan.

The first phase of this project has concluded with the completion of the building of 80 houses and 16 animal shelters. The second phase will get underway immediately after the month of Ramadan. It consists of repairing and refurnishing the village elementary school, clinic and mosque. Also, water supply will be improved and existing latrines made functional and their design improved as part of the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) program that will be implemented.

This project engages the community beneficiaries in rebuilding their homes and lives with active participation in the design, implementation and monitoring of the development.

during hurricane Katrina. We were there to provide emergency supplies such as; medicines, food, water, blankets, tents and clothing.

Working in collaboration with international NGOs such as Islamic Relief, International Development & Relief Foundation (IDRF) and the Red Cross, we have provided financial assistance to support development in the aftermath of disasters. In Pakistan, we set up emergency medical clinics and distributed essential food packages to families affected by famine.

Our goal is to respond immediately and responsibly to the needs of people in disaster- affected areas and we do this to the extent made possible by the generosity of our donors and supporters.

Our initial project started in the Thar Desert region of Pakistan. To date, the Water Exploration Project has provided over 90 wells and 300 hand pumps which have helped thousands of people access clean drinking water.

Our goal is to expand this project to other parts of the world where the need is great. Providing water to the thirsty, even animals, or vegetation is a noble act and can become a perpetual charity.

You can support this important project by sponsoring a water well for a one time donation of $2500 or $800 for a hand pump.

In acknowledgement of your support, Muslim Welfare Centre will place a plaque with the sponsor’s name on each well or hand pump.

Qurbani & Zabiha Qurbani or sacrifice of cattle, as practiced by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is an essential Islamic practice commemorating the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham (PBUH).

Muslim Welfare Centre has been actively involved in collecting and distributing over 20,000 pounds of Qurbani meat annually, to families in need through our Food & Essential Items Banks in Scarborough and Mississauga, as well as our Muslim Welfare Home in Whitby.

For the last 20 years Muslim Welfare Centre has also arranged overseas Qurbani in many poor countries in order to meet increasing demand of our donors in Canada.

During this time, we have developed a network of reliable contacts to ensure this important religious duty is carried out on behalf of our donors, and the distribution of meat to deserving families is fulfilled. By offering your Qurbani overseas, we have been able to help families in Azad Kashmir, Bangladesh, Burma, Guyana, India, Pakistan, Syria, etc. with over $100,000 worth of meat annually.

Water ExplorationWater–The source of LifeThe Muslim Welfare Centre’s Water Exploration Project brings this basic necessity to the underprivileged people in the remote villages of third world countries.

A harsh but true reality is that clean drinking water is inaccessible to many people living in many poor countries. Annual Dinner & Mayor John Tory’s Visit (21 Year Celebration)Muslim Welfare Centre celebrated 21 years of community service with an Annual Dinner, held on November 15th, 2014. The evening provided a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the organization’s achievements and focused on some important initiatives for the future. Guests included leaders from the business, political, and faith communities, as well as our generous donors and supporters.

The event featured the announcement of a generous financial contribution to the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation (RVHSF). This lead donation supports the Central East Regional Cardiac Care program at the RVHS Centenary and will bring world-class care to the people of Scarborough and beyond. The event also saw acknowledgements for long-time supporters and ended with a sumptuous meal catered by Chef Afzal Bhatti from AFFYS Premium Grill.

MuslimFest MIssissaugaAs one of the top 100 signature events in Ontario, MuslimFest celebrated its 11th anniversary and Muslim Welfare Centre was there.

This annual event which celebrates the best of Muslim art, culture and entertainment was held on August 2 & 3, 2014 at Celebration Square in Mississauga. This venue provided us the opportunity to market our programs to a diverse audience in the West and to expand our community connections for the Mississauga branch.

Many visitors were thankful for the free Blood Pressure Clinic which was run by volunteer physicians and nurses from the MWC clinic in Scarborough. This event was a wonderful venue to showcase our services and we look forward to the 2015 program.

Halal Food Fest TorontoMuslim Welfare Centre was once again the charitable partner for the 2nd Annual Halal Food Fest Toronto- North America’s largest halal food festival - held on June 14 & 15, 2014 at the International Center in Mississauga.

The event provided a great opportunity for the 20,000 plus visitors to learn about the various social services programs offered by the organization and event organizers provided many marketing opportunities for Muslim Welfare Centre, including a food drive.

Reviving The Islamic Spirit (RIS)As one of the largest Muslim events in North America, the annual Reviving the Islamic Spirit (RIS) convention was held December 26 - 28, 2014 at the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto.

Muslim Welfare Centre has participated in this event for a number of years to showcase our social services programs to a very large and diverse audience coming from all across North America and overseas. We have partnered with RIS to hold a Winter Coat Drive for the homeless and this has been quite successful as we have received over 2,400 coats over the years. Additionally, we have collected toys and non-perishable food items for our food bank.

Muslim Welfare Centre is very thankful to the RIS organizers for their ongoing support to our food bank and Meals on Wheels.

I expressed a qualified audit opinion on those financial statements in my report dated April 20, 2014.

The summary financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. Reading the summary financial statements, therefore, is not a substitute for reading the audited financial statements of MWC.

MUSLIM WELFARE CENTRE OF TORONTO NOTES TO SUMMARY FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2014Muslim Welfare Centre of Toronto (the organization) is serving and fulfilling the educational, social and economic needs of the community of Greater Toronto and vicinity. The organization was incorporated without share capital as a non- profit organization on March 23, 1994 and is a registered charity under the Income Tax Act. Their motto is “Service to Humanity is service to Allah”. The organization is serving humanity irrespective of religion, nationality, caste, or creed.

1. Summary Financial Statements: The summary financial statements are derived from the complete audited financial statements, prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, as at and for the years ended December 31, 2014.

The preparation of these summary financial statements requires management to determine the information that needs to be reflected in the summary financial statements so that they are consistent, in all material respects, with or represent a fair summary of the audited financial statements.

These summarized financial statements have been prepared by management using the following criteria:

a) Whether information in the summary financial statements is in agreement with the related information in the complete audited financial statements; and

b) Whether, in all material respects, the summary financial statements contain the information necessary to avoid distorting or obscuring matters disclosed in the related complete audited financial statements, including the notes thereto.

Allocation of common expenses The organization engages in various programs. The cost of these programs includes costs of personnel, premises and other expenses that are directly related to providing the programs. The organization also incurs number of general support expenses that are common to the administration of the organization and each of its programs. The organization allocates certain of its general support expenses to programs, administration and fundraising expenses on an appropriate basis as follows:

Looking back... Service to humanity is service to Allah (God)In 1993, the foundations of the Muslim Welfare Centre of Toronto were laid by two visiting seniors from Pakistan, Major Muhammad Abbas Ali (1921 -2009) and his wife, Sarwar Jahan Begum (1928 – 2013), when they established a small Halal Food Bank in Scarborough.

Thanks to their dedication and tireless efforts, and the generosity of a supportive community, the Centre evolved rapidly and soon included a shelter for women and children in Whitby, as well as food bank services in Mississauga and Montreal. In the years following, Muslim Welfare Centre expanded its services on an international level with its support a child program in Pakistan, and water exploration in third world countries, and as well as disaster relief. After the passing of Major Abbas, Muslim Welfare Centre was ably guided by Sarwar Jahan Begum until her demise in 2013. The Centre continues to grow with a number of services being added; thanks to the strong community support.

Over two decades have passed, yet the founding principle of serving humanity irrespective of religion, nationality, caste or creed still guides all aspects of our organization.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, the city named a park in the community where he dedicated a significant part of his volunteer efforts as Major Abbas Ali Park. It’s befitting that this park hosts various youth sporting events which Major Abbas so ardently supported.

I shall pass through this world but once. Any good therefore that I can do,or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now.Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.
