3 2017 Annual Report
WelcomeOur new Executive Director, Mary Powell
Dear NNCCF Family,
The past year included a great deal of change for our country, our community, and our organization. Throughout these changes we at NNCCF have embraced the opportunity to reflect and improve our impact on those experiencing childhood cancer in northern Nevada. It is through transition we have seen passion, determination, and opportunities arise that we may not have seen otherwise. Together in 2017 we have:
• Provided $381,269 in support to northern Nevada families experiencing childhood cancer• Clocked nearly 3,000 volunteer hours in service to NNCCF• Distributed $47,084 in gifts during our holiday Adopt-A-Family program• Raised $265,128 for childhood cancer research• Awarded $67,678 in college scholarships to childhood cancer survivors
We know that 2018 will bring a new set of challenges. We know more children in northern Nevada will be diagnosed with cancer, some will relapse, and some will not survive. We are certain out-of-pocket medical expenses will continue. It is inevitable we will see a parent choose their child’s care over employment or a basic necessity. There will be other challenges in the year to come that we have no way to foresee.
We also know that 2018 will continue to bring passionate supporters to our NNCCF family that will stand in the gap to conquer these challenges. You will shave your head, sponsor a golf hole, play poker, host a bake sale, recruit your friends and co-workers, volunteer your time, and uplift the NNCCF staff to be the frontline of support for our community.
Thank you for the ways you have allowed us to grow and serve our community better in 2017. You are in every teddy bear, gas gift card, paid utility bill, hug, and “No More Chemo” bell ringing. Thank you in advance for continuing to stand in the gap as we grow and improve with every challenge that 2018 brings us.
With great appreciation,
Mary Powell

5 2017 Annual Report
Meet Jake In June of 2017, Jake was rushed to the ER and diagnosed with lymphoma on his sister’s 16th birthday. “Our poor boy didn’t even have a chance to blink,” said Jenelle, Jake’s mother. Jenelle noticed physical changes in Jake’s chest as they were getting ready that morning, and made an appointment with the doctor. Jake had a healthy routine doctor check-up a month prior, which added to the confusion when he was diagnosed with cancer. “The word cancer was thrown out there,” Jenelle recalls thinking, “Cancer... Cancer? There’s no way our kid has cancer.”
Jake has been in treatment for the last eight months which has included hospital stays, chemotherapy and its side effects. “It’s hard for [his] sisters to watch their brother endure his struggles on a daily basis,” said Jenelle. Jake’s parents and older sisters have adopted a new routine, but are ready to get back to normal life.
Jake is a “goofy kid” and has an upbeat personality. Although the lows of cancer affect him and his family, NNCCF has been able to provide both financial and emotional support. “They are there for hugs, laughter and support.” Jenelle said, “I know everything can be so overwhelming with a new routine thrown into our daily lives, but NNCCF is definitely a must.”
In September 2017, NNCCF was able to provide Jake with a computer through the E-Kids program. E-Kids offers flexible learning opportunities by providing electronic educational devices, such as laptops and tablets, to NNCCF kids in active treatment. The program provides age-appropriate tools needed to succeed academically and stay socially connected during long hospital stays and absences from school.
Jake is a “computer nerd” and loves to play video games. “He’s addicted to Minecraft,” Jenelle said, “I believe it helps him pass the time especially when he’s isolated from his friends.” Jake has been homeschooling with Washoe County School District and hopes to go back to school part-time in spring 2018. He is close to entering the maintenance phase of treatment, which may last another year or two.
Jake, 11-years-old

6 2017 Annual Report
In 2017, the Mullins family hosted their 6th Annual Meadow View Farms Charity Horse Show raising over $50,000 for NNCCF. The two-day event is hosted on their property in south Reno.
Over the past 7 years, NNCCF and their staff have been the perfect partner to share our vision of combining our love for horse sports, and giving support to local families with children battling cancer.
We have been privileged enough to meet some of those families when they have come out to the horse shows every summer, and we are honored to continue to do what we can to support them through the Meadow View Farms Charity Horse Show!

In 1989, we lost Tamison’s little brother, Tommy, to neuroblastoma when he was just 6 years old. Our contributions to NNCCF are given in memory of him with the hope that those funds can be a comfort to families of children fighting cancer.
Mike is proud to work for locally owned Haws Co. in Sparks, Nev., who match our family’s donations through their corporate matching program and also organized a Haws Co. fundraiser benefiting NNCCF last year.

10 2017 Annual Report
In-Kind
To all cancer warriors reading this, my biggest advice to you would be: when you find yourself sitting there, whether it be next to your IV pole (mine was named Pole Rudd — I would also suggest a name like Angelina Polie) or at home wondering if you are ever going to recover before your next round, take a moment to imagine what you are going to do when you are in remission. I constantly imagined myself back with my friends in San Luis Obispo, and I am happy to say that’s exactly where I am right now.

- Johnny, 19-years-old
Meet Johnny While home on winter break in December 2016, Johnny was diagnosed with Stage IV non-Hodgkin lymphoma and quickly started an aggressive treatment protocol consisting of weekly chemotherapy infusions, and emergency room visits. Although cancer put his career dreams on hold, by May 2017 his scans showed no active cancer in his system. He is now back in school and on track to become an architect.
Through his treatment, Johnny gathered advice to share with other patients on their journey:
