Applying some basic steps in the way garbage is stored and collected are responsible actions communities need to take to help keep bears and other wildlife away from your garbage or property. Waste Collection: To report bear problems call: 1 866 514-2327 | TTY 705 945-7641 . It starts with you ! We’ll take it from here . 22 Help keep bears and other wildlife out of your garbage Do not leave garbage, recycling or food waste out, except within the allowable times on pickup day. Place your waste at the roadside by 7 a.m. on your collection day and not the night before. Use a green cart with a locking lid for food waste. The green cart will keep wildlife attracting odours locked in. If you must place your waste to the roadside prior to 7:00 am on collection day, use a City approved bear resistant storage container for your roadside collection. Whenever possible, store waste in approved containers with lids rather than garbage bags. Keep food scraps in the freezer until collection day. Wash your garbage, recycling and organic containers and lids often with a strong smelling disinfectant to reduce odours. Store garbage in airtight containers inside your house, garage or shed. Do not store garbage in plywood boxes, old freezers or vehicles. If you must store waste outside on your property, use a bear resistant storage container, if you experience reoccurring bear encounters. If you don’t have roadside collection and/or have additional waste, take it to a landfill site often. By following these tips, you can help keep bears and other wildlife out of your garbage.
