HELPING HAWAI‘I ISLAND
LIVE LONGER & FEEL BETTER
January 2016
Angels Making a Difference
For Others
‘Tis the season to give back! On December 11 & 18, 2015, Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‘Ōiwi donated 34 thermal
totes to Hawai‘i Pacific Oncology Center and Liberty Dialysis. Each bag was sponsored by individuals and
families located on Hawai‘i Island, Oahu, and as far as Virginia. Treatment for some patients can take up to
several hours, so Hui Mālama staff decided to donate a thermal bag to help keep their snacks warm or cold
during treatment. The bags were filled with items such as blankets, socks, caps, and other goodies. Each
bag held an “Angel” tag that identified the different sponsors and where they lived. This special gift-giving
drive was spearheaded by Lehua Andrade, RN, Case Manager/Outreach Clinical Supervisor.

in giving, and in serving
others."

Live longer & FEEL BETTER
Limit your intake of processed meat. Go easy on the sausage, hot dogs (do you know what hot dogs are made of?) bologna & salami. Despite the good taste, these are often loaded with saturated fat, preservatives, sodium & calories.
Tip: Enjoy a super ono-licious balanced meal prepared with fresh meat, such as fish or chicken. Add fresh vegetables for added health benefits. Your body will thank you.
Message from our Executive Director
Aloha Kakou,
Happy New Year! I hope 2016 has started out well for
you. As we begin a new journey into 2016, I wanted to
take a moment and thank all the people who have been a
part of Hui Mālama this past year. I thank our staff for
your relentless hard work and constant giving, our Board
for your solid direction and unwavering support,
volunteers and community supporters for your endless
hours of assistance. And I especially want to thank our
participants, for focusing on improving your health and
trusting Hui Mālama to be part of your journey. Mahalo

2016 promises to be another amazing year, and it is
especially important to us as this is our 25th year of helping
Hawai‘i Island to live longer and feel better! We
encourage you to make healthy choices in all areas of your
life, and hope that you will let Hui Mālama help.
Come join our classes and support groups, have some fun
at our many activities throughout the year (check out our
calendar of events), encourage your family and friends to
check us out (or better yet, bring them yourself!), and
register to become part of our volunteer pool. Help us to
spread the message of health to all of our Hawai‘i Island.

The Value of Sharing
By Aunty Edna Baldado, RN Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‘Ōiwi Health Education Specialist
I recently heard this statement used as a theme of a program on the radio— “There is virtue in
sharing.” A beautiful, basic concept we should be living with. In essence it means there is value in
sharing, regardless of whether it is something tangible like a gift, a heart-felt “thank you” or an idea
that brings joy into someone’s life, or lifts them out of some sad or tragic moment or even enlivens
an idea that they can expand upon.
The dictionary defines “share” as a portion of something belonging to one person to use or enjoy
with others or to participate in with others. “To apportion, divide, section off” and in essence taking
something you value and allowing someone else to experience that preciousness.
Sharing does many wonderful things. It brings joy, satisfaction, blessings, warmth, and peace. It
brings a sense of caring and support; a sense of connection; a feeling of contentment and it
demonstrates a sense of love and care.
Sharing is immeasurable, invaluable, irreplaceable. It may be time-consuming, but it is priceless;
long lasting and is a never- to- be- forgotten act of love.
Even if you are not thinking about “why you are sharing”, it still needs to be with the right heart, in a
right spirit, and most importantly - WITH ALOHA.
In this new year, share the message of health ~ encourage loved ones to get their health
checked, to eat healthy, and get lots of exercise. Sharing the message of health can help others
live a healthier and happier life.

New Year, New YOU!
By Lehua Andrade, RN
Hui Mālama Ola Nā ‘Ōiwi Case Manager/Outreach Clinical Supervisor
As we enter into the New Year, many people are taking steps to making a “New You”. Here are some
tips to help you Live Longer & Feel Better this year:
Eat mindfully and simplify your menu. Pay attention to the foods you are eating and chew each
bite at least 30 times (this will help to slow down and aid in digestion). Keep it simple by
eating only whole or natural foods which will help to cut out chemicals from your diet
Enjoy life in the slow lane and put away electronics to simplify your life. Statistics proves that
people who meditate are happier, healthier and live longer. Encourage yourself and family to
designate an “Electronic Free” hour or day. You may also ban cell phones at the kitchen table
which allows people to focus on conversations with the entire family
Get enough sleep. Adults (including the elderly) should sleep 7-8 hours every night; school-age
children should sleep 10 hours and teenagers should sleep 9-10 hours. Adequate sleep
increases healthy brain function and helps your emotional well-being. Sleep will also play a
role in your physical health. Remember sleep is a necessity, NOT a luxury
Be active at least 30 mins/day for five times a week. Physical Activity helps to promote range of
motion to your joints and promotes circulation to all parts of your body. Remember, physical
activity has many health benefits!
Protect yourself from illnesses and diseases by washing your hands often with soap and water.
Don’t forget to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.
You should wash your hands for at least 20 seconds
