Air Branch Naval Reservistspick up their medalsOver three decades after the FalklandsWar ended seven Naval Reservists havebeen awarded their South AtlanticMedals at a small ceremony held atRoyal Naval Air Station Yeovilton.

The group of naval reservists had served

across the Fleet Air Arm’s Units in the

months after 12 July 1982, the date for the

end of hostilities, which qualified members

of the Armed Forces for the South Atlantic

Medal. But last year a long-awaited inde-

pendent review ruled that this time should

be extended by an additional three months

to October 21 1982, covering a period

when a threat to British forces was still at a

heighted state.

Presenting the medals at the RNR Air

Branch Officers annual conference was

Commodore Jamie Miller OBE, Naval

Regional Commander, Wales and Western

England (NRCWWE). He had served as a

Lieutenant Commander onboard HMS

Coventry during the War, before she was

attacked by a wave of Argentinean A4

Skyhawks. They released three 250 kg

bombs which hit the Ship just above the

waterline and caused the abandonment

and eventual sinking of HMS Coventry.

“It is a great honour to be presenting

these South Atlantic medal to you today”,

said Cdre Miller. “It all seems so very long

ago now, but it is good that you have all

been recognised for your brave efforts”.

Receiving South Atlantic medals were;

Commander Ian Halliday, Warrant Officer 1

Andy Mathews and Lt Cdr Jerry Newall

who had all served on HMS Illustrious. Air

Engineers Lieutenant Commander Stuart

Meikle of 824 NAS and Chief Petty Officer

Andrew ‘Whisky’ Walker of 845 NAS and

Cdr Robin Wain who served onboard HMS

Brazan.

The seventh and final Falklands medal

was presented to Lt Cdr Simon Smith, who

during the Falklands was a Senior

Aircraftsman with the RAF, but later trans-

ferred to the senior service. He also picked

up his Operational Service Medal (OSM) for

OP Silkman, where he was the Air Traffic

Officer onboard HMS Ocean off the coast of

Sierra Leone in 2001.

Other awards being presented by the

Cdre were, Volunteer Reserve Service

Medals (VRSM) to Lt Cdr Gareth Mills and Lt

Craig Compain for seven ½ years Reserve

service. A first clasp after 12 ½ years serv-

ice to his VRSM medal for Lt Cdr Steve

McArdell. A second Clasp after 17 ½ years

to Lt Cdr Bill Powell and finally third clasps

to their VRSM’s went to Lt Cdr Suzanne

Clark and Lt Cdr Ed Oates for a staggering

22 ½ years Reserve service each.

Cornwall is leading the wayin the delivery of affordablehomes, with over 1,000homes built between March2014 and April 2015. Thetotal exceeds the Council’starget and is the largest num-ber of affordable homes everdelivered in the Duchy in asingle year.

The Council’s success, work-

ing together with its partners,

puts Cornwall near the top of

all English local authorities in

the delivery league table. The

Council’s affordable housing

team has worked in partner-

ship with housing associations,

charities, private developers

and the council housing service

to deliver a range of affordable

homes including affordable

rent, shared ownership and

discounted homes to buy.

The 1,008 homes completed

in 2014/15 have been built

across Cornwall, from Bude to

the Lizard, Liskeard to St Just in

Penwith and Looe to Newquay.

They include homes for older

people in Camborne and

Liskeard and community based

housing in Menheniot and

Nancledra and range from sin-

gle dwellings through to

schemes of over 60 affordable

homes. A total of 633 were for

rent and 370 for sale.

Chelsey Williams recently

moved into the 1,000th afford-

able home built during the last

financial year. Chelsey said:

“We were over the moon to get

one of the new builds within

our local village. Me and my

husband have both come to

love and appreciate over the

years of living here, and could-

n't have dreamt of a better vil-

lage and community for our

two young children to grow in

it.

“The house is everything and

more we could have dreamt of

for the four of us. And we can't

begin thank everyone enough.

If it wasn't for Ocean and the

Council’s hard work, none of

this would have been reality.

“We truly believe these

schemes for local people in local

villages are fantastic. It allows

local people who cannot afford

to buy a property the opportu-

nity to have a beautiful home at

an affordable price.”

Swimming Pool at HelstonSports Centre to Re-openon 25th May 2015Tempus Leisure is pleasedto confirm that the swim-ming pool and changingfacilities at Helston SportsCentre are due to re-openon Monday 25th May fol-lowing a period of essen-tial maintenance.

The pool which is a popu-

lar facility for the town and

surrounding area has been

the subject of a comprehen-

sive refurbishment pro-

gramme that commenced in

March. Works have included

the replacement of the pool

roof, refurbishment of the

changing rooms and updat-

ing of the hot showers,

together with the installa-

tion of new alarm systems

throughout the building.

Helston Sports Centre is

operated by Tempus

Leisure on behalf of

Cornwall Council and pro-

vides a range of sports and

fitness activities. In particu-

lar, the swimming pool nor-

mally receives over 7,500

visits each month ranging

from regular swimmers of

all ages to schools and clubs.

The works have been

funded and organised joint-

ly between Tempus Leisure

and Cornwall Council and

great care has been taken to

minimise disruption to cus-

tomers and limit the time

for which the pool has been

closed. Efforts have also been

made to relocate the

Centre’s swim-school to

nearby sites to allow chil-

dren to continue with their

swimming lessons.

Matt May, Centre Manager

says: “The team here are

delighted that after 10

weeks of closure the pool

will re-open on 25th May,

Bank Holiday Monday.

“The Sports Centre is well

used and was sadly showing

signs of age. While we make

any every effort to avoid any

disruption to our customers,

the replacement of the pool

roof and improvements to

showers and changing areas

were major works and

unfortunately required the

closure of the pool.

“We would thank all those

customers who have shown

support during this chal-

lenging time and we look to

welcoming our swimmers

and returning to our nor-

mally busy pool pro-

gramme. Although the

majority of works have

focused on the pool roof,

swimmers will certainly

notice the improved show-

ers and changing facilities!”

To help with the re-open-

ing and encourage swim-

mers to return, the Centre is

offering reductions on all

swimming prices on Bank

holiday Monday and free

membership until July for all

customers taking up the

membership offer.

Cornwall Fire and RescueService launch dementiaawareness campaignCornwall Fire and RescueService is supportingDementia AwarenessWeek (17-23 May) bylaunching a new initiativeto help their staff and thepublic understanddementia and the chal-lenges that people withdementia face.

The initiative is being

launched on the Piazza in

Truro on Monday 18 May,

from 9.30am to 4.00pm

when Fire and Rescue staff

will be engaging with the

public passing on knowl-

edge they have recently

gained, and encouraging

people to think differently

about dementia.

Dementia can happen to

anyone and there's cur-

rently no cure. It can strip

you of your memory, your

relationships and your con-

nection to the world you

love, leaving you feeling iso-

lated and alone.

Fire and Rescue staff

have already started work-

ing with the Dementia

Action Alliance and

Dementia Friends in the

dementia cafes in Cornwall

and this has already

improved their knowledge.

An ongoing process of Fire

and Rescue staff awareness

training will continue to

further broaden their

knowledge.

us and describes a range of

symptoms including mem-

ory loss, mood changes and

reasoning. These can sig-

nificantly impact on indi-

viduals and carers lives and

awareness around the con-

dition. By working togeth-

er we can help support the

individuals to make small

changes which can make a

real difference to their

independence. Sometimes

it’s the simple things that

a real difference to some-

one’s quality of life.”

affirmations such as ‘I’m not good

enough’. Mine used to be ’I don’t

deserve good things’.

A couple of years ago we climbed a

1,000ft waterfall in Yosemite National

Park. We were nearly at the top when

we saw that the path became a vertical

climb. My wife decided to wait there with

the bag, having no head for heights, and

my son I went alone from there.

Having got to the top he was exhausted

and extremely hungry. The thing was,

the food and drink were back down the

trail with my wife. ’I can’t do it’ he

exclaimed through tears of tiredness. I

suddenly felt a really bad parent bringing

him up there unprepared during his

usual nap time!

I told him to say ’ I can do it, I can do it,

I can do it’ out loud three times. When he

did this his physiology changed and he

immediately started the decent down to

the food and drink. After a short refresh-

ment break he continued down the path

to the base without any further stops

apart from the last few hundred yards

when he could just go longer and fell

asleep on my shoulder within seconds!

All thoughts impact your brain chemistry.

Regular thought patterns create well

worn paths in your brain. However, you

can undo these and create new ones

with new thought patterns. But it can be

very hard work with habitual thought pat-

terns/beliefs.

I do believe affirmations can work but

they can be like first aid and can help

you in times of trouble but trying to

change longer term thinking habits with

different thinking can be hard work and

often unsuccessful.

However, going further upstream,

beyond the content of thought and

understanding the nature of ‘thought’

can transform your experience in life far

beyond the use of affirmations. Instead

of trying to change the content of your

thinking you can begin to see that think-

ing just doesn’t matter, it’s not worth lis-

tening to and you access a more reliable

guidance mechanism to life, your intu-

ition.

Thinking is all about the past and future.

None of which exists except in your

imagination, your thinking. Thinking

takes you away from the hear and now.

Thinking also tells you are not OK

unless something on the outside

changes such as a circumstance or what

someone thinks of you.

Thinking prevents you from being in

reality, it often fights reality. The thing is

we are designed to live in reality. When

we are in reality, in this moment, we

have access to a range of resources

such as intuition, inspiration and wisdom

which we don’t have in our illusion of

reality in our thinking.

Acceptance for the here and now is far

more powerful than any affirmation.

Acceptance does not mean putting up

with things and not wanting them to be

different. It is accepting your starting

point, the reality of the here and now.

From this place you can access amaz-

ing resources you have within you to

create the life you want.

The best affirmation I recommend is ‘I

accept myself as I am today’.

Strip Naked & Re-DressWith Happiness

At a special ceremony at RoyalNaval Air Station Culdrose MrGraham Warren has been pre-sented with the Imperial ServiceMedal, after 32 years exemplaryservice as a civil servant workingin the Air Traffic Control tower.

The medal is one of the UK’s high-

est commendations and awarded in

recognition of long and loyal service

within the Civil Service.

Graham Warren joined RNAS

Culdrose in March 1982 as a Motor

Transport driver. In 1984 he was

loaned to Air Traffic Control (ATC)

to work as the Airfield driver.

Graham’s duties over the years have

been numerous and varied includ-

ing escorting visiting air-

c r e w

around the station as well as looking

after the runways arrestor barriers.

It is estimated he's clocked up over

200,000 miles around the airfield

perimeter tracks.

The Fleet Air Arm's West

Cornwall base has changed dramati-

cally in both appearance and occu-

pancy over the intervening 32 years.

Gone are Gazelles, Wessex and

Jetstream aircraft. In their place are

Merlins, Avengers and Hawks and

the final days of the mighty Sea

Kings which have dramatically

reduced in numbers since he started.

Throughout his career, Graham

has provided operational support to

Culdrose as it supported aircraft and

personnel through conflicts in the

Falklands, Bosnia, the Middle East

and more recently

Afghanistan.

He has seen 18 different “Wings”

(The name given to Commander Air

on the Station), countless ATC

Officers and two Air Traffic Control

Towers.

Presenting Graham with his medal

was RNAS Culdrose's Commanding

Officer, Captain Ade Orchard OBE.

The Imperial Service Medal is

affiliated with the Imperial Service

Order, which was awarded on retire-

ment to clerical staff of the civil serv-

ice throughout the British Empire

for long and meritorious service.

The medal was established on 8

August 1902, by King Edward VII. It

is presented to non-managerial civil

servants who have completed 25

years service upon their retirement.

In March, 22 pupils from theTeresa Blee Dance School inHelston took their RoyalAcademy of Dance (RAD) Balletexaminations and all were suc-cessful.

Over grades 1-7 there was a 69%

Distinction pass rate (getting at

least 75 marks out of a possible

100), so an incredible set of results.

The Grade 6 and 7 students can also

use their marks to gain UCAS points

for university and higher education

entry in the UK.

The RAD states, “Our exams are

recognised worldwide. They allow

you to develop musicality and

artistry, reward your hard work

and set goals to which you can

aspire.

Helston Athletic FC secure fundingfor ground improvementsHelston Athletic FC have beenboosted by the news that theyare to receive a £62,696 grantfrom the Premier League,through the Football StadiaImprovement Fund (FSIF), inorder to carry to a wide range ofground improvement works attheir Kellaway Park home.

Funding from the Premier

League will enable Helston AFC to

meet the necessary ground

requirements to play in the

Carlsberg South West Peninsula

League Premier Division from the

start of the 2015/16 season.

Specifically, the funding will be

used towards the instillation of a

new floodlight system, a 100-

seater covered grandstand, pitch

perimeter barrier and fencing.

The works at Kellaway Park,

once complete, will benefit not just

players and officials, but by

improving fans’ safety and comfort

and enhancing the match-day

experience, will also help ensure

that the club can remain financially

sustainable over the coming years.

Funded with £5.2m each year

from the Premier League, the FSIF

is the country’s largest provider of

grants towards projects that help

improve the comfort and safety of

lower league football grounds in

both the professional and amateur

game. These improvements range

from new football stands and turn-

stiles to floodlighting and

improved provision for disabled

supporters.

Athletic FC, said: “Without the FSIF,

our commitment to bring a higher

standard of football to the town of

Helston would have stalled. We

thank them for their hard work

and generosity in ensuring, that for

the first time in the Club’s history,

Helston AFC will be playing South

Western Peninsula Premier League

football in the 2015/16 season. We

believe our facilities will soon be

some of the best in the County and

we look forward to being able to

host top quality football at

Kellaway Park for many years in

the future.”

* Assistance to senior accountants with a broad range of high

level issues including equity planning, VAT, cash flow

forecasting and management accounts.

* Accounts preparation jobs either from the client's trial

balance or from their original accounting records

* Reviewing and reporting on financial information systems

This position would suit someone who is client focused,

ambitious and a diligent worker who enjoys working as

part of a team. The ideal candidate would be:

* AAT qualified or ACCA part-qualified

* Experienced in using software packages such as Sage

practice software, SAGE 50, Sage 50 payroll, Quick

Books or other bookkeeping software

There is scope for rapid career progression, for the right

candidate. Remuneration dependant on experience.
