Cornwall looks to the Skies toWish Iconic Royal Navy HelicopterSquadron a ‘Happy Birthday’The people of Cornwall came out in theirthousands to wish 771 Naval Air Squadrona ‘Happy 76th Birthday’ on Thursday.

The eyes of Cornwall looked upwards be-

tween 10:30 – 12:00 as five Sea King helicop-

ters from the Search and Rescue Squadron,

based at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose,

flew in formation around the west coast of

Cornwall. The sixth aircraft due to fly was

scrambled to two consecutive rescue mis-

sions just before the formation group got air-

borne.

771 Squadron decided to celebrate its 76th

year, by flying around the coast from Helston

to Land's End, up to Newquay and over Truro,

before flying back to the Lizard via Falmouth.

One of the main reasons for organising the

event was to say thank you to the people of

Cornwall for their continued support over the

years. This year is the Squadron’s last birth-

day before it hands over its search and rescue

duties at the end of the year.

The five four-man crews were extremely

touched by the number of people who made

the effort to come out and give them a wave

during their 150 mile tour of the coast. Lieu-

tenant Commander Richard Calhaem, Com-

manding Officer of 771 Naval Air Squadron

said: “It was very humbling to see the level of

public support. We were not expecting such

high numbers of people coming out to give us

a wave. Some people had even put messages

on the beach or even at their school! On be-

half of the whole of the Squadron, I would like

to say a big thank you to everyone who took

the trouble to come and see us fly past.”

“I wish that we could have covered the

whole of Cornwall, but we still have the

search and rescue role for another seven

months and there will be plenty more oppor-

tunities for the public to see us before we

hand over our duties. In particular, at this

year’s Culdrose Air Day in July, we are plan-

ning to open up our hangar and put on a spe-

cial exhibition. We will also be present at

many RNLI events around the Cornish Coast

throughout the summer.”

The group traditionally

enter the festival and this year

have had a great outcome

winning the award for best

director for Nikki Roberts,

and Best Actress for Suzanne

Goodwin. Mike Cox, who

played opposite Suzanne in

the two-hander, was nominat-

ed for Best Actor for his per-

formance.

Nikki Roberts was thrilled

with the result, “Both Mike

and Suzanne worked very

hard to get to such a great

standard for the performance.

“We always have a great

time performing in the One

Act Play festival, and it is even

better to come back with two

awards. We couldn’t have

hoped for better!”

The One Act Play Festival

took place during the same

week the group presented the

South West premier of Sunset

Boulevard, which they had

outstanding reviews for.

Chairman Paul Blaber com-

mented “It is fantastic that our

group, which is quite small in

comparison to other groups

in the county, can put on two

shows in the same week with

such brilliant results. There is

such a community feeling

within Helston Theatre

Company and I am delighted

for both Nikki and Suzanne.”

Over the years, 771 Naval Air

Squadron has lived up to its motto

‘non nobis solum - not unto us

alone’. At 15 minutes notice by

day and 45 minutes by night, the

Squadron is capable of operating

within a 200 nautical mile radius

of RNAS Culdrose. They carry out

over 200 rescues a year, ranging

from plucking sailors from sink-

ing ships, to airlifting casualties of

road traffic accidents to hospital

and assisting the police in carry-

ing out aerial searches for missing

people.

Every year they save many lives

in some of the most hazardous

conditions imaginable, often put-

ting their own lives at risk. Their

assistance to mariners in distress

has gained them awards and brav-

ery medals, for rescues including

the Fastnet race of 1979, the

Boscastle Floods of 2004, the MSC

Napoli in January 2007 and more

recently aiding the crews of the

stricken ‘Panamera’ and ‘La

Sillon’.

A team of busy engineers work

hard to keep the aging Sea King

helicopters ready to fly when the

emergency demands, one avail-

able for tasking and a second on

the Culdrose tarmac ready to join

it in the skies if necessary. It is

unusual for all of the Squadron’s

aircraft to fly together as

Lieutenant Commander Calhaem

explained: “To get six aircraft in

the air at once was a mammoth

task for the whole Squadron. The

engineers who have worked

around the clock to make the air-

craft serviceable especially

deserve praise.”

771 Naval Air Squadron will

continue in their Search and

Rescue Role until December 31st

2015.

RecipeRoasted vegetable quinoa saladINGREDIENTS

1. Preheat the oven to 200 C / gas 6.Place the peppers on a baking dishcut side up and sprinkle thecourgettes and red onions over thetop. Roast for 15 minutes.

2. Meanwhile, rinse and drain thequinoa and add to a medium sizedpot of boiling water, along with thethyme and rosemary.

3. Boil the quinoa to 10 to 15 minutes,or until the grain splits and you cansee the germ. Drain and put aside.

4. Scatter 1 tablespoon of the pinenuts over the peppers and roast foranother 10 to 15 minutes. Keep aneye on it, because the nuts canreally brown.

5. Remove the baking dish with thepeppers from the oven and spoonthe quinoa into the empty pepperhalves.

6. Scatter with rocket, fresh basil andremains of the pine nuts andarrange lemon wedges forsqueezing.

with a hovercraft, a few cannons, lots

of bangs and a push bike that powers

a blender. Looking at the inventors

and the engineers who have shaped

the modern world we live in.

Enjoy a series of experiments and

audience participation demonstra-

tions are linked by a fast moving, fun

narrative which introduces each sub-

ject. Presenters burst onto stage

introducing themselves as members

of the Ministry of Science. Their mis-

sion today, is to look at the different

types of energy and how it’s used in

the modern world. They’ll also look at

some of the engineers and scientists

who have helped shape the world we

live in and some other random sci-

ence experiments simply because

they are either cool or blooming dan-

gerous…..

All the content of the show delivers

good, correct science and aims to

educate the audience with not only

how the experiments work but how

they were discovered or invented as

well. From liquid nitrogen flowers to

Following the decision of Jeremy

Rowe, the Liberal Democrat

Member for St Issey and St Tudy, to

stand down as Deputy

Leader of the Council, the role has

been taken over by Adam Paynter,

the Liberal Democrat Member for

Launceston North and North

Petherwin.

Confirming the appointment Mr

Pollard said “Adam brings enormous

experience to the Cabinet and I

know that his wise counsel and

intelligent approach will be a great

assistance to me and the Council. “

Mr Pollard also paid tribute to the

contribution which had been made

by Jeremy Rowe, who will continue

in his role as the Cabinet Member for

Localism. “ An architect of the

alliance, the foundation of the

Liberal Democrat contribution to the

Cabinet and, most importantly, the

most dependable and supportive

Deputy anyone could wish for. He

has been brilliant. I am delighted

that he remains on the Cabinet and

know that he will be an integral part

of the team. “

Mr Pollard also con-

firmed that all the nine

remaining Members of the Cabinet

would continue in their existing

roles.

At the meeting Members also elect-

ed Ann Kerridge, the Liberal

Democrat Member for Bodmin St

Mary’s, as the Chairman of the

Council, with Mary May, the

Independent Member for Penryn

West, elected as Vice Chairman.

This is the first time in the history

of both Cornwall Council, and the

former Cornwall County Council,

that two women have held the roles

of Chairman and Vice Chairman at

the same time.

Thanking Members for their sup-

port and confidence, Ann Kerridge,

the former Vice Chairman of the

Council, said that John Wood had

been an excellent Chairman and

would be a hard act to follow. Her

comments were echoed by Council

Leader John Pollard who said that

Mr Wood had been a superb

Chairman of the Council.

Also thanking Members for their

support new Vice Chairman Mary

May pledged to do her best for the

Council and for Cornwall.

Following the announcement that

Chief Executive Andrew Kerr is leav-

ing the Council to take up a new

position as the Chief Executive of

Edinburgh City Council, Members

have confirmed the arrangements

for the appointment of a new Chief

Executive and Head of Paid Service.

A Selection and Appointment of

Chief Officers Panel will now be

appointed and convened as soon as

possible to oversee the appointment

process, including all relevant terms

and conditions. Members of the

Panel will include the Chairman of

the Council, the Leader, Deputy

Leader, Independent Cabinet

Member, the Group Leaders of the

Conservative, UKIP, Mebyon Kernow

and Labour groups and the Deputy

Leader of the Conservative Group.

The Panel will report back to the

next meeting of the full Council on

21 July.

The Institute of AdvancedMotorists (IAM) is warning peo-ple to be aware of the changesthat will take effect in just overtwo weeks’ time as the papercounterpart for the drivinglicence is scrapped.

As was the case with the aboli-

tion of the paper tax disc last

October, the IAM fear many people

are still confused or unaware of the

implications of the scrapping of the

paper counterpart on 8 June.

The counterpart was introduced

alongside the photo card driving

licence in 1998 to include details

that could not be included on the

card itself, such as any endorse-

ments and which category of vehi-

cles you are entitled to drive.

However this information will

now be stored electronically and

not be shown on any written docu-

mentation you will have. These

details can be only be obtained via

the DVLA driver record system,

and be checked online or in writing

by post.

As of 8 June the paper counter-

part, or an old-style paper driving

licence cannot be relied upon to

carry correct or-up-to-date infor-

mation about endorsements or cat-

egories of vehicle someone can

drive.

The counterpart will carry no

legal status, and the DVLA recom-

mends you destroy it after 8 June.

What is also changing is the pro-

cedure if you have to surrender

your driving licence to a court in

the event of an endorsement. The

court will take your photocard and

if you include the paper counter-

part with your submission, the

photocard will be returned to you

but the counterpart will not. You

will be expected to pay your fine in

the normal way however.

Another change is how to pro-

vide proof of your driving record to

an employer or car hire firm, as

your photocard or paper licence

will not be enough in itself any

more.

You will need to access the

DVLA’s Share Driving Licence serv-

ice, which is now up and running.

You will be expected to access

the details yourself and print those

off for submission to a car hire firm

or employer. Or you can call the

DVLA and give a third party per-

mission to check your driving

record verbally.

If you are hiring a vehicle, it is

important to check with the car

hire firm beforehand what infor-

mation they need. Other than

downloading the information as

detailed above, you can also obtain

a special code from www.gov.uk

which allows the hire firm access

to your record for 72 hours to

make the necessary checks. This

applies to both holders of photo-

card and paper licences.

Sarah Sillars, IAM chief executive

officer, said: “People are not aware

of how many of the current proce-

dures are changing. Similar to the

abolition of the tax disc, they

assume much of what has hap-

pened before will continue.

“The onus is very much on the

individual to obtain the informa-

tion they need beforehand. So we

very much hope people will not be

caught unawares, especially if they

don’t want a nasty surprise when

arriving to collect their car at the

start of their holiday.”
