Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to Kansas Ivory (Room 2) and Madison Zangl (Room 2) who are both new to Henley School and
started recently.
We also welcome Shona Bryant, a teacher trainee from the University of Canterbury, who is based in
Room 18 until the end of the term. We hope you enjoy your placement at Henley School.
Well done to all of the children
who participated in the Weetbix
TRYathlon on Sunday. We had
91 students who took part – our
largest group yet and as a result
we won a prize for the school
with the most entries. It was
great to see so many students
proudly wearing their TRYathlon
tee shirts and medals at school
on Monday. A big thanks to Jan
Lynch for coordinating the
entries and organising the
Henley gazebo that provided shelter for the many who attended. This is a fantastic event and the children can be very proud of
their achievements. I watched a number of our Henley children compete and I am sure they would have slept well on Sunday
night after the early start and physical activity. Our own school triathlon for Middle and Senior Syndicate students is on Thursday
19th March.
Last week many of you would have been at the school swimming sports at Nayland Pool. Thank you also to the parents who
assisted with marshalling and supervising the children at the pool. The benefit of this venue is the ability for it to cater for our
whole school without the need to run separate swimming sports as would be the case at other venues. The cost of the venue is
also currently more attractive than other options. Thanks to Cade Armstrong, Jan Lynch, Sabine Reinert and their respective teams
for organising the day as considerable planning is required to make these types of events run smoothly.
Yesterday we had a number of children who took part in the Inter School Swimming Sports at Nayland Pool. Our students did well
taking out a number of placings in the individual events. All our relay teams placed with both boys’ teams and the senior girls’
team winning their events and our junior girls team coming second. Thanks to Mrs Myers and Mrs Lynch who managed the teams
and assisted with the running of the event and to the many parent supporters we had down there on the day to cheer the
swimmers on.
Over the next few weeks we have our Senior Syndicate on camps at Lake Rotoiti. Considerable work goes into organising the
camps and I would like to thank the teachers for their commitment in making this outdoor experience a reality for the children. As
teachers, we learn a lot more about our class and the individual children. For some children it is their chance to shine and
demonstrate skills in other areas. Camps provide opportunities to learn some of the key competencies required to function in
society. Thank you to all the parents who are supporting the camp in various ways such as transport, baking or by offering to be
a camp parent.
Thank you to those parents who have returned their updated contact details form to us – it is vitally important that we have the
most up to date information on our system at this end. If you still have yours at home and your details have changed then please
get that back into the Office as soon as possible.

Middle and Senior Syndicate
Thursday 19th March
2.00pm start
On Thursday 19th of March,
Henley School will hold its Middle

swimming (no scooters please!). The event will be run as a
participation event, with the emphasis on having fun and
accomplishing a challenge. Races will be run in class groups
rather than age-groups.
Please make sure that your child has a bike that operates, plus
a helmet, some running shoes and swimming togs.
Come along and support all the kids in this fun
event from the spectator’s area, the space

Whakataukī
At Henley School we teach the children Whakataukī (Māori
proverb) to reinforce values in our curriculum. This allows
us to teach topics with a cultural perspective and put the
learning into practice in our school, homes and community.
Currently our school wide theme is about Challenge so we
have chosen the following Whakataukī.

We’re all in this together
Book Club Issue 2 - orders
close Friday 27th March
Spare leaflets are usually available in the Library.
Book Club orders must be made on-line. The school is not able
to process orders for families. To order, follow step 1 under
the ‘Three Easy Ways to Pay’, which is in the Book Club leaflets.
Harold dropped in for a
visit at the Junior
Syndicate’s picnic at
the end of February.
DOGS IN SCHOOLS
In regards to the playground, we remind you that it is
important that if you bring a dog into the grounds it is
done so on the understanding that you are confident
that you have full control over the animal. You need
to be certain that your animal is always on a lead
and remains close to you (not at the end of a fully
extended lead) and we discourage you from
encouraging children to play with the animal or play
between dogs. If you cannot control your animal,
you will be asked to remove it from the premises
permanently. Please be mindful that we have many
students who are afraid of dogs.
There are many factors that can startle even the
most trusted animal. Also, a reminder that no dog
should be on barked areas, allowing children less
confident with dogs a safe place to play, and that
any faeces are the owners responsibility for removal.
Please remember
that our children are
also learning how to
be appropriate with
your animals.
