DESCRIPTION

Shakespeare takes us on an epic journey through royal courts and battlefields, conjuring a vast world through the suggestive power of his incomparable language. Following a bloody civil war, charismatic young Henry, England's new king, sets out to repair his fractured nation with a common purpose: war with France. But unprepared and outnumbered, Henry's small army of bumbling country rubes and petty thieves seem to be no match for the slick French war machine. While Henry sets out to secure his crown and reputation, he finds humility, true leadership, and the power to inspire a nation. From the rousing speeches to the dark eve of Agincourt, Henry V is both adventurous and introspective – a tale of raw power punctuated by surprising moments of comedy, brought to you by the Philadelphia region's top producer of Shakespeare's work and featuring local musical theater actor BEN DIBBLE in the title role. If the point of theater is “to hold the mirror up to nature,” then Shakespeare has given us a mirror that created a revolution in storytelling that still reverberates through our culture today. Shakespeare did not invent the form of the Elizabethan history play, but it is because of him that these plays are remembered, and because of him that they still infl uential to authors wishing to reach an audience with an urgent message.

With Henry V, Shakespeare is not really writing about the English past, but using a well-known story to write about the modern age of the 1590s. I believe that he was far less interested in relating a series of factual events from the 1400s than he was in showing the English of his own time what kind of nation they could have if they had the forethought and the fortitude to create it. More importantly still, he tried to show what kind of human beings they could be if they could know themselves and govern themselves individually. Henry V was a diff erent kind of king because he knew his fl aws and felt deeply that his position did not come to him through his own deserving, but rather constituted an awesome responsibility that he would have to work hard to bear. He did not seek to separate himself from the common people, but knew them, their faults, and their potential – and saw these same things within himself. His story is always one of aspiration, of trying to be better than he already is. He doesn’t always make the best decisions – in fact, the war with France goes from bad to worse almost from the start – but he always takes responsibility and never abandons those who have placed their trust in him. Shakespeare dispenses with any fairy tale sense of happily ever after in his story of the ideal king. In fact he’s quite explicit that the chaos that preceded this king returned with a vengeance directly after him. But, as with the legend of Arthur, the “brief shining moment” of good leadership under Henry V had a particular resonance with the English people. Shakespeare seems to be saying, “Forget about posterity and worrying about all those things you can’t control, but make the most of this moment and the people with you, here and now.” In a time of absolute government censorship and authoritarian rule, the subversive genius of Shakespeare is that he creates a model and standard of leadership by which the people cannot help but use to judge their own times, and which may even prick the conscience of the ruler to rule better.

Television includes Inspector George Gently, The Tudors, The Borgias, Father Ted, and the recent Treasure Island.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (Playwright) (1564-1616) Aside from fi nancial records that indicate his father’s business as a leather merchant, there is relatively little known about Shakespeare’s youth in Stratford-upon-Avon before he married Anne Hathaway in 1582. It is believed that Shakespeare arrived in London around 1588 and established himself as an actor, playwright, and poet. By 1594, he was acting and writing for the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, later the King’s Men, the most successful theater company in London. As part-owner, Shakespeare became not only a famous playwright but a successful businessman, and returned to Stratford to retire comfortably in 1611. Thought to date from 1599, Henry V is the fi nal part of a four-play tetralogy of “history” plays, beginning with Richard II and proceeding through Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2. It is impossible to know how many words and phrases Shakespeare contributed to the English language (some scholars estimate it around 3,000), including “devil incarnate,” “household words,” and “dishearten,” all appearing for the fi rst time in Henry V; “advertising,” “gossip,” “premeditated,” “elbow room,” “for goodness’ sake,” and “too much of a good thing” are also attributed to him.

CHARLES MCMAHON (Director & Artistic Director) co-founded the Lantern in 1994 and serves as Artistic Director in addition to acting and directing for the company. Acting credits include Heisenberg in Copenhagen, Lucky in Waiting for Godot, Guildenstern in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Edmund in King Lear, and Pete Seeger in the world premiere of Un-American. Directing credits include New Jerusalem (twice); Romeo & Juliet; A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Henry IV, Part I; Hamlet; Othello; La Ronde (also translator and adaptor); Richard III (Barrymore Award, Outstanding Production of a Play); The Comedy of Errors (Barrymore nomination); Much Ado About Nothing; The Tempest; King Lear; and A Doll’s House. Charles is a graduate of NYU’s theater department where he studied acting and directing.

Illumination is Lantern Theater Company’s award-winning education program, which engages local students in the world of theater and nurtures their artistic expression through free or low-cost matinee performances, in-school residencies, and after-school drama clubs throughout the city.

Thanks to your support, we are bringing our Shakespeare Mini-Residency program to local high schools across the region, including multiple classroom visits by Lantern teaching artists, free tickets to a student matinee performance of Henry V, and transportation to/from the Lantern – all at no cost to participating schools and students. These residencies are of great value to overextended teachers and schools being asked to do more with less, and for students often enjoying their fi rst exposure to the arts.

Join us for the following special events during the run of Henry V, presented as part of our In Conversation audience engagement series.

SCHOLARS: IN CONVERSATION – THE SPARK OF WAR: POLITICS, LEADERSHIP & THE PSYCHE OF A NATIONThis three-part discussion series will introduce the powerful themes of Henry V as a catalyst to explore modern issues of leadership, politics, and how war stories shape national identity. Each discussion concludes with a moderated Q&A with the audience.

THE TRANSFORMATIONAL POWER OF LEADERSHIPMonday, March 25 at 7pm

Moore College of Art & Design president and local thought leader Cecelia Fitzgibbon (pictured) and Lantern artistic director Charles McMahon will address the nature of leadership and the relationship between great leaders and their citizens, both in Shakespeare’s history and in the modern world.

THE PSYCHE OF A NATIONMonday, April 1 at 7pm

American popular historian and internationally acclaimed author Kenneth C. Davis will address the power of mythmaking and storytelling in shaping national identity, in Shakespeare’s time and in signifi cant historical moments since. Bestselling author of the popular Don’t Know Much About® (pictured) book series, Davis has appeared on CNN, NPR, TODAY, Fox & Friends, and the CBS Early Show. Limited copies of Mr. Davis’ books will be available for purchase and signing at this event.

POLITICS AND POPULISMMonday, April 8 at 7pm

Rutgers University history professor Alastair Bellany and local Shakespearean scholar and Villanova University professor John-Paul Spiro will explore the power of the people’s will in shaping the political history of nations, whether the medieval England of Henry V, Elizabethan England, or in the United States.
