FIRST IMPRESSIONS



Yesterday after-noon, even though the committees

did not start debating, they had their first ses-sions. The four English committees chose to do different things. The chairs of GA asked for the delegates to intro-duce themselves, while Commission on Status of Women (CSW) started with ice breakers such as “Psycho”. They were standing in a circle and getting to know each other while having fun. UNCIO preferred to start with a well-known game called “Never have I ever”. In this game, each player says something that he or she had never done before

and the delegates who have already done that raise their hands. The first delegate who reached five (who had already done five things mentioned in the game) got kicked out of the committee, which was in this case, the dele-gate of the United States. As the press team, we also want to congratulate him for being kicked out from the committee in the very first session of IELMUN 2013. Apart from that, Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC) start-ed with regular stuff; the chairs asked the delegates to introduce themselves by telling their names and hobbies to the whole committee.

After the open buffet, it was time for the Open-ing Ceremony. The del-

egates gathered in the Hall at 7 pm and took their seats while the press members tried to find the right spot to observe the event. First was the performance of the Bogazici Jazz Choir: a winner of several awards earned all around the globe. They mesmerized the crowd with their covers of well-known Turkish songs and managed to do an awesome job without any instruments as they have embraced the A Capella style. Afterwards, we were intro-duced to our presenters, Cem Vardar and Giz Belkaya, who are both students of IEL and proud officials in IELMUN. After speak-ing about the efforts put in the making of this conference, they stepped aside for us to watch the

two videos; the first one intro-ducing the Orga Team, Staff and Press, the second one demon-strating the preparation process for IELMUN. Subsequently, they yielded the floor to the first speaker, Jana Groh, an advisor as well as a teacher in IEL. She spoke of her experiences in Istanbul as a foreigner and her impressions of the merger of east and west in this unique city and culture. The second speech was given by the Academic Team Advisor Umut Erdogdu, who spoke of the current state of the world and the ongoing issues and conflicts among countries while addressing many crucial questions that would echo in our heads throughout this conference. Then, our presenters appeared again, only to introduce to us IEL’s very own Jazz Trio, which took our breaths away with

their amazing performance. This was followed by the illuminating talks of Furkan Sener and Yigit Akdemir, the Directors General. They further emphasized this year’s topic “The Interaction be-tween Orient and Occident” and elaborated the term ‘Alienation’. The model globe on the platform seemed to incarnate their lecture. The last person to step on the stage was the honorable Secre-tary General, Sina Kuzuoglu. His words were very brief and to the point; he also announced a big treat and enticement for the dele-gates of the English Committees: the best delegate would be granted the chance to get a scholarship to the distinguished MUN in Rome. He left the platform with a loud round of applause which marked the end of the Opening Ceremo-ny.

1)Don’t be shy, speak up! Feeling nervous before giving a speech is natu-ral and even favorable. Channel your anxiety into enthusiasm. The more you believe in yourself more comfortable you will feel. This will eventually gen-erate real confidence. You know what they say “Fake it you make it”2)Know your topic. Read your study guides and do a little research on web about your country and recent events that are related to your topic. Giv-ing statistics and quoting notable speeches always empower your arguments.3)You might have the per-fect speech for your topic but if no one understands what you’re saying it won’t

matter. Adjust yourself to the audience. Speak at normal pace and try to be clear, concise and articu-late as possible.4)Don’t be overly compet-itive. Trying your best to win an award is a dele-gate’s primary duty , especially when there’s a ticket to Rome at the end of the line, but exag-gerating your enthusiasm and ambition might cause tension with others.5)Suit up! First impres-sions count. Making a fashion statement can im-prove the visual delivery of your performance. Your choice of clothes will make a difference in the success of your speeches. But most importantly dress appro-priately to the dress code.

6)Read the rules of proce-dure. A delegate randomly shouting “Point of Order” to ask the permission to use the restroom isn’t the most desirable situation for a committee director.7)An hour and half long sessions can be tiresome and consuming. Coffee breaks are the perfect opportunities to regain your energy. Drink your coffee and eat your cook-ies. As soon as you get that glucose in your system your brain will function properly once again.8)Don’t read it directly from the paper. Make sure that your eyes aren’t al-ways on your notes. Make eye contact when you’re addressing to the commit-tee room.

IELMUN 2013 Eröffnet

Samstag, 31.08.2013: Im dieser Tage erstaunlich kühlen Istanbul beginnt

heute IELMUN 2013. Einzigar-tig durch dreisprachige Or-ganisation, prächtig imperiale Räumlichkeiten und eine vor Leben überschäumende Umge-bung feiert die Konferenz heute ihren zweiten Geburtstag. Den würdigen Beginn marki-erte hierbei die Eröffnungsver-anstaltung. Nach einer rund einstündigen, atemberaubend-en Konzerteilage des Bogazici Jazz Choir wurden zunächst kurze Impressionen zum Organisationsteam und der Vorbereitung gezeigt. Es folgte die Rede der Vorsitzenden des IELMUN Clubs, Frau Groh, die besonders auf die Rolle Istan-buls als Schmelztiegel zwischen Ost und West, zwischen Mit-telasien und Europa verwies. Diese einmalige Charakteristik,

so Groh, prädestiniere Istanbul als einen Ort des kulturellen Austausches und eines Projek-tes wie IELMUN. Im Anschluss hieran sprach die Chefinstanz für alle Fragen akademischer und inhaltlicher Natur, Umut Erdoğdu. Auch er ging auf die besondere kulturelle Rolle Istanbuls ein und fand in der berühmten Galatabrücke für das harmonische Miteinander von Orient und Okzident eine gelungene Metapher. Nach-folgend spielte der Jazz Club mehrere Stücke mit starken und professionellen Soloein-lagen zur Unterhaltung der Delegierten. Die anschließende Rede der beiden Generaldi-rektoren, Furkan Saygın Şener und Yigit Akdemir, bot eine alternative Sichtweise auf die Differenz zwischen Ost und West, die zum Nachdenken an-regte. Die gewagte Konklusion

der wechselnden Redner, die das Publikum in antithetischen Redeanteilen unterhielten, be-stand in der Konstatierung der Nicht-Unterschiedlichkeit von Ost und West, die lediglich eine im Kern falsche Konstruktion sei. Als dann Sina Kuzuoğlu, der diesjährige Generalsekretär von IELMUN, die Bühne betrat, gab es standing ova-tions. In genau richtig dosierter Länge vermochte er, ein Dank-eschön an alle Organisatoren mit einem Ausblick auf die aktuellen Probleme der Vere-inten Nationen zu kombinie-ren. Er schloss mit der offiziel-len Eröffnung der Konferenz, wofür noch einmal tobender Applaus zu vernehmen war. Kurzum: Die Eröffnungsveran-staltung war ein ausgezeichnet gelungener Beginn für ein Fest der Interkulturalität, Offenheit, Freundschaft und des Lernens.

Ağustos ayının son günü, İELMUN 2013 için hareketli bir gün oldu. Saat on birde başlayan kayıt işlemleri ile birlikte yakalarına kartlarını takan delegeler, ardından oturumlara katıldı. Bu oturumlar, gelecek günlerdeki

oturumlara yönelik bir prova niteliği taşıyordu.Saat beş buçukta başlayan açılış kokteylinden sonra katılımcılar konferans salo-nuna yöneldi. Boğaziçi Caz Korosu sahneye çıktığında, İELMUN açılış gecesi de resmen başlamış oldu.Boğaziçi Caz Korosu mükemmel performansı ve harika müzikleriyle dinleyicil-ere keyif dolu anlar yaşattı. Konseri takiben, İELMUN 2013 organizasyon ekibi-ni ve genel anlamda İELMUN’ u tanıtan videolar gösterildi.Gece boyunca yapılan konuşmaların teması doğu ve batı etkileşimiydi. Bayan Groh, İstanbul’a ilk geldiğinde yaşadıklarından ve hissettiklerinden bahsederek, İstanbul Lisesi öğrencileri ve İELMUN organizasyon ekibi hakkındaki düşüncel-erini aktardı. Daha sonra, İELMUN 2013 akademik danışmanı Umut Erdoğdu yaptığı konuşmada, konferansın akademik anlamda nasıl hazırlandığından bah-setti ve katılımcıları Pazartesi akşamı gerçekleşecek olan Speakers Night’ a davet etti. Yapılan bu konuşmaların ardından Caz Üçlüsü sahnedeki yerini aldı. Çaldıkları üç parça dinleyenlerin beğenisini topladı. Genel Direktörler Yiğit Akdemir ve Furkan Saygın Şener ‘ in yaptığı senkronize çalışma, belki de gecenin en dikkat çekici konuşmasıydı. Yiğit, yeşil renkli kra-vatıyla doğuyu temsil ederken Furkan kırmızı boyunbağı ile batının temsilciliği-ni yaptı. Gecenin son konuşması Sina Kuzuoğlu’ na aitti. Genel Sekreter, Roma Model birleşmiş Milletler ile İELMUN arasında yapılan anlaşmadan bahsetti. Suriye ve Mısır konularında ise silahlardan önce siyasal açıdan yapılması gereken görüşm-elerin ve konuşmaların öneminin altını çizdi.Uzun lafın kısası, IELMUN 2013 artık resmen başladı. S: Bize Boğaziçi Caz Korosu’ndan biraz bahseder misiniz?

C: Koro aslında bu ismiyle 2011’den beri var ama biz asıl ku-ruluş tarihini 2007 olarak kabul ediyoruz, yani benim koroya şef-lik yapmaya başladığım zaman. O koronun tarihi de 1994’te kurulan üç tane koroya dayanıyor. 2005’ te ben koroya şarkı söylemeye gird-im, sonra 2007’ de benden önceki şef Amerika’ ya gitti doktora için ve yerini bana bıraktı.

S: Peki koroya seçilecek kişilerde, sesini iyi kullanmasının yanı sıra başka özellikler de arıyor musunuz?C: Arıyoruz. O arayışımızı ikinci plana attığımız zaman zorluk çekiyoruz içeride.Aradığımız şey her insanda olmayan bir şey maalesef. Biz her şeyi birlikte yapıyoruz, bunun için seçilecek kişinin sabırlı, metanetli olması lazım çünkü bu zor bir tempo, zor bir çalışma sistemi. Ben de çok kolay bir adam değilim, bana da katlanabilmesi lazım biraz. Onun dışında, sorumluluk alabilmesi gerekiyor koroya giren kişinin, çok fazla iş var ve hepsini paylaşıyoruz. Ve tabii ki, komplekslerinden, egolarından arınmış olarak koroya gelebilmesi ya da koroyla alakalı meselelere bu şekilde yaklaşabilmesi gerekiyor. Burada, diyelim ki otuz-kırk kişiysek, hepimiz farklı farklı zevkleri, farklı alışkanlıkları, farklı hassasiyetleri ve farklı dünya görüşleri olan insanlarız, farklı yerlerde okuyan, farklı yerlerde yetişmiş, farklı ailelerden gelen... Renklerimizi koruyarak, bir şekilde köşelerimizi yuvarlayıp bir araya gelebilmemiz lazım; bunu sağlayacak en önemli şeylerden birisi ödün verebilmek, her konuda. Dolayısıyla çok önemli bir özellik bu. Bundan yana çok sıkıntı oluyor tabi ki. Konuşuyoruz ediyoruz, mülakat da yapıyoruz ikinci aşamadan sonra, ama insanlar o hevesle ya olduklarından farklı konuşuyorlar ya da doğru düşünmüyorlar o an, çünkü koroya girmek cazip geliyor ama sonra kendileri de sıkıntı yaşıyorlar.

S: Facebook’ taki sayfanızdan seçme yaptığınızı duyduk. Seçmeleri koro şefi olarak yalnız mı yapıyorsunuz yoksa kimin seçileceğine bütün koro mu karar veriyor?C: Bütün koronun seçme yapması pratik değil zaten. İki aşamalı bir seçim bu, birinci aşamasında ben oluy-orum, yanımda da biri oluyor, not alacak, fikir verecek birisi. İkinci aşamada ise altı yedi kişi olabiliyoruz. Bunun sebebi; hem zaten beraber konuşup tartışıyoruz hem de ikinci aşamada aday kendisine bir hafta önceden verilmiş parçalardan belli kesitleri çalışıyor. Aday kendi ses grubuna ait kısmı söylüyor, korodakil-er de ona diğer ses gruplarına ait kısımları söyleyerek eşlik ediyor.

Hazır bir gençlik organizasyonunun içindeyken soralım: yeni nesil olan bizlerin geleceğini nasıl görüyorsunuz?

Ben de 1987 doğumluyum, çok uzak değilim sizin nes-linize. Bu konuda muhtemelen herkesin kafasındaki düşünce Gezi olaylarından sonra epey bir değişmiştir. Kendi hayatına, özgülüklerine sahip çıkan, ulaşmak istediği şey için mücadele etmekten korkmayan bir nesil, ve bunun için de, kendi çağının sunduğu imkanları çok akıllıca kullanabilen bir nesil olduğunu herkese gösterdi, Y ,kuşağı diye nitelendi-rilen bu nesil. Ben de ümitliyim, bu olaylar hepimizi bir ölçüde uyandırdı. Ümitliyim yani, evet, kendi neslim- den ümitliyim. Ama işte bu bizim ümitli olmamızla hallolabi- lecek bir şey değil, bahsettiğin bir önceki soru bu konuda çok önemli, yani bu işin alttan başlaması gerekiyor. O yüzden yeterince engelleme, sansür ,geliyor yani, amaç zaten insanların bilinci bir şekilde kazana- maması olduğu için, hep uyutul-maya çalışılan bir nesil var ama ,izin vermeyeceğiz ,,gibi

Lise ve Üniversitelerde gerçekleştirilen kültür sanat etkinliklerini yeterli görüyor musunuz?

Görmüyorum. Öğrenciye daha fazla sorum-luluk verilmesi gerektiğini düşünüyorum, sorumluluk derken güven anlamında. Ayrıca bu sorumlulukları alabilecekleri platform-ların da arttırılması gerektiğini düşünüyo-rum. Sizin bu etkinliğiniz gibi mesela. Evet, bir çok lisede var bu tarz etkinlikler, üniver-sitelerde biraz daha fazla tabi ki, hem yaş itibariyle daha geniş bir skala olduğundan dolayı, hem de işlerin çapı büyüdüğü için. Ama liselerden bu işin ,,başlaması gerekiyor, sonra .üniversiteye gelen çocuk sudan çıkmış balığa dönebiliyor.
