What is the HEROES RUN?The HEROES RUN is the flagship fundraising event of the charity Passing It On. Passing It On was set up in 2004 by Matt Lambert and James Macdonald after hearing of a small school in Nairobi, Kenya. Some of the children attending had to walk for miles every day and most didn’t have any shoes. So the pair decided to start raising money by running the Dublin marathon dressed up as Batman and Robin.

After really enjoying the marathon (especially the dressing up bit) they decided to set up a charity to help expand the Tenderfoot School with the addition of 6 classrooms. One fundraising project turned into three fundraising projects and Passing It On is now in the process of funding the build of three schools in three African countries.

Since the first event in 2004, the HEROES RUN on Brighton Seafront has helped Passing It On to raise nearly £300,000 and has been enjoyed by several thousand runners of all ages, fitness levels and abilities. In the last three years the event has seen its numbers go from around 500 in 2008 to over 1500 in 2010. The event attracts all demographics, young and old. In 2011 Passing It On are hosting 3 HEROES RUNS :

Brighton 5km and 10km 15th May 2011 Southampton 5 km 1st October 2011 Poole 5km 2nd October 2011

Everyone is welcome and unlike many other events we actively look to support other causes through our HEROES RUN. A multitude of other local and national charities have benefited from our event in the last 7 years, here are just a few of them:

Shelter Help for Heroes The Rockinghorse Appeal Cancer Research UK Martletts Breakthrough Breast Cancer RSPCA Mankind The Terrence Higgins Trust

HEROES RUN is a fantastic and innovative addition to your fundraising portfolioHEROES RUN is a fun event with an edge, meaning that it’s appealing to both the amateur and the serious runner.

HEROES RUN is organised differently to other mass participation events; we want this event to be inclusive to all charities, regardless of budgets and size. This is why we charge a low fee to other charities so that more of the fundraising goes to your causes.

Every year loads of HEROES RUN participants set up Just Giving pages to raise funds for the charity of their choosing. The nature of this event seems to inspire something in those who run it to try and raise as much as they can. (Apparently it’s not easy to say no to someone who’s dressed as a horse or as Bananaman asking for your support!)

Once a Hero, always a Hero – most of our runners come back year on year to have some fun and make a difference.

Charity places at the HEROES RUN in Southampton or Poole cost just £20. For the 2010 Brighton event 91 runners raised a total of £13,626.47 (including gift aid) for Passing It On. Therefore the average per runner was £149.73. And with a low entry fee, you can send more of this to your projects.

Why are we offering places to other charities?

Regardless of where, what or who your charity supports, we at Passing It On believe that we are all in this together. As we see it, if you buy charity places in our event our 3 African School/ Orphanage projects benefit and the event provides wider benefit too. If we provide you and your fundraisers with a unique and exhilarating fundraising experience not only will your charity benefit but there’s a very strong chance they will do the same for you next year. Who knows, they might even bring some of their friends with them.

HEROES RUN has gone from a race of 241 runners in 2005 to approx 1,500 in 2010. The event is a success because it attracts positive and friendly people.
