I would like to welcome all the runners and walk-

ers to Charleston and to our 34th Annual Cooper

River Bridge Run. On behalf of our executive com-

mittee and staff I hope everyone will enjoy the

new and creative things that we have planned

for this year’s event.

Working with the help of 3,600 volunteers (900

are our charity partners) our staff is dedicated to

putting on a world-class event. We strive to make

this event very special to all that attend. This year

we are launching the race-let which will help the

race go green by reducing the amount of paper

and lowering our carbon imprint. We will also be using the Chrono-track timing

systemwith the timing device in the race bib. The race for the first timewill have

a wave start, which will include 12 unique starts categorized by color, alpha and

numeric. For the first time we are having a pasta dinner, which will be called“Taste of the Bridge Run” and consist of 10 of Charleston’s Best Restaurants.

Please note that the Kid’s Run will be held at Hampton Park on April 1, with

a special expo and activities lead by Tim Arem. At 4 p.m. Tim will also conduct a

magic show at Hampton Park and do a stretching exercise with the kids before

the run.

Once again I would like to thank the more than 60 sponsors for their

generosity and support and the thousands of volunteers that make this event

happen. I would like to thank the city of Charleston and the town of Mount

Pleasant police forces for their dedication.

I hope everyone will enjoy being part of the event and all the festivities of

the Cooper River Bridge Run and Walk that the staff has put together for you.

RRick Sargent’s hopes were dashed, temporarily, on August

15 when he mistakenly thought that was the day officials

would notify the winner of the 2011 Cooper River Bridge

Run design contest.

The day came and went. No call.

The 2011 poster was praised for incorporating Charles-

ton’s history into the design.

“I figured better luck next year,” said Sargent, a certified

medical illustrator and owner of Sargent Illustration & De-

sign. He’s also an adjunct graphic design instructor at the

Art Institute of Charleston and an avid runner.

Three days later, he got the call, stood up suddenly knock-

ing over a painting, and told the caller, “You’re kidding!” Hiswife was in the room and asked what was up. An artist, too,

she shrieked with excitement.

Sargent had won the design contest.

Needless to say, the couple was excited because – be-

sides the $1,000 award and the publicity the design gen-

erates for the artist – the contest is becoming increas-

ingly competitive because of the Art Institute’s presence

in Charleston.

The judges had a difficult time deciding on the winner

among 15 true contenders and said that some were gravi-

tating toward “fun and cartoon-y” designs and others to

more artistic designs, like Sargent’s. Indeed, Sargent said

it was his wife’s suggestion to add some Philip Simmons

ironwork to the design as a tribute to the famed Charleston

artisan who died last year.

“The design evolved from several ideas,” said Sargent,

who is 37 and lives in Mount Pleasant. “I knew what color

scheme I wanted to start with and, because I’ve run it (the

Bridge Run), I wanted the bold presence of the Charleston

skyline that strikes you as you near the top of the bridge.”

The result, Sargent said, was the juxtaposition of Charles-

ton’s history and classic, natural beauty with the modern

bridge’s expression of its bright future.

Unlike many of the artists who have won the contest in

recent years, Sargent is an avid runner – finishing four mara-

thons in the past five years – and has run and will run the

Bridge Run. Sargent added, “I got into running five years ago

because I need goals to stay in shape.”

EVENT AND COURSE OVERVIEWThe course (10,000 meters or 6.2 miles) is flat, except for the 2.5

miles of the Cooper River Bridge, which rises about 160 feet. The

course embraces many facets of Charleston and Mount Pleasant and

includes the scenic Wando and Cooper rivers, and historic residential

areas. The course runners and walkers will enjoy breathtaking views

of Fort Sumter, the harbor, historic Charleston and various residential

and shopping districts.

RUN/WALK STARTING LINEParticipants should arrive at 7 a.m. The Run/Walk start will

be at 8 a.m. sharp on Coleman Boulevard near Moultrie Middle

School, about halfway between Shem Creek and Sea Island

Shopping Center. The wheelchair race will begin promptly at

7:30 a.m. Be aware of medians along the first two miles of Cole-

man Boulevard. Race bibs (numbers) must be worn to board buses,

to enter seeding areas at start, to cross the bridge and to cross

the finish line. Unregistered participants will be removed from the

course. Runners must position themselves according to antici-

pated finishing times and their color-coded numbers. THIS WILL

BE ENFORCED!The timing device this year is the ChronoTrack B-Tag single-use

bib tag. Make sure your bib is: clearly visible on the front of the torso;unaltered and unmodified (do not fold or wrinkle); pinned in all four

corners; and not covered by water bottles or wet clothing. A record-

ing for the actual time that you cross the starting line will begin the

score of your time. It is very important that all participants cross the

actual starting and finish lines to get their true times. Both actual and

official time will be recorded, with the official time being calculated

from the starting gun instead of the time the participants cross the

starting line.

Each mile of the race route will be clearly marked, and split times

will be provided. Water will be available at the start, between mile

1 and 2, just after the bridge, at mile 5 and at the finish. First aid

stations will be available at the start, at the foot of the bridge and

at the finish.

The finish is on Meeting Street at the intersection of George

Street. Fruit, juice and water will be available. Only runners with offi-

cial numbers, clearly visible on the front of their shirts, will be allowed

to finish. Move quickly through finish area. Do not stop.

BOAT RIDES (SHUTTLE BOATS) – SOLD OUTFor runners and walkers: you must have a reservation and wear

your bib to board the shuttle boat. Reservations can be made on-

line and will be listed on a roster. Shuttle boat cost is $8 per person

and can be purchased with registration or at the EXPO Thursday

and Friday, if available. Boats to the Start leave the IMAX Dock (on

Concord Street just north of the Aquarium, which is at the end of

Calhoun Street) at 6 a.m. Shuttle buses will transport participants

to the starting areas. Return rides to Mount Pleasant scheduled

from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. (return reservations not required,

cost is $4 cash).

SHUTTLE BUSESShuttle buses will leave from the Gaillard Auditorium on Calhoun

Street for the trip to the start line. Bibs (run or walk numbers) must be

worn to be allowed on shuttle buses! Buseswill begin leaving by 5:30a.m. All participants should be in line no later than 6 a.m. All buses

will stop running at 6:45 a.m., at which time you will be responsible

for your own transportation. The buses will drop participants behind

the start on Coleman Boulevard. Return buses to Mount Pleasant will

depart from the front of the Gaillard Auditorium.

TThe plan was going to be simple and small – go to Folly

Beach with a minister and get married in early May. No fuss,

no muss.

Now, Tina Berwanger and Andy Cook will be the center

of attention, surrounded by thousands of sweaty people

on a makeshift beach constructed on a corner of Marion

Square, just minutes after crossing the finish line of the

34th annual Cooper River Bridge Run and Walk on April 2.

The young couple, who moved from North Carolina to

Charleston last summer, recently won the Carnival Cruise

Lines’ Race to the Altar contest, a promotion that promises

to be among the most memorable events in Bridge Run his-

tory.

The prize for winning includes a wedding, complete with

outfits and beach scene setting, and a five-day cruise to the

Bahamas aboard Carnival’s Fantasy. The total package is

worth $4,178.

Twenty-five couples submitted entries, including a video,

for the contest. Berwanger and Cook’s entry stood out not

only because of their creativity and personality but also be-

cause of their journey to a life of health and fitness, according

to LindsayMiller, an account supervisor with Rawle Murdy As-

sociates that works with Carnival on local marketing.

Combined, the West Ashley couple has lost 140 pounds

in the last two years. The 5’7” Berwanger has gone from

220 to 160 pounds and the 6’2” Cook went from 265 to

185 pounds.

Cook, 27, admitted that their weight gain, like many, start-

ed in college ”from partying too much and eating fast food all

the time.” And it continued as they entered thework force, he

as a paramedic and she as a receptionist.

The bride-to-be initiated the change, largely because of

the wedding.

“Nobody wants to be a fat bride or feel bad in a wedding

dress,” said Berwanger, who is 26. “When you’re big, you

don’t want to go around trying on dresses.”

Cook took awhile to join her. “At first, it was probably

hard on her to lose weight because I like to eat a lot, but I

saw she wanted to reach a goal and I didn’t want to drag

her down.”

Together, they started preparing healthy meals and

working out at home, including running on a treadmill and

exercising along with videos.

In the process, though, both found another common love

– health.

Now, they vow to continue living healthy lives long af-

ter their April 2 nuptials.

With the wedding planned and paid for by Carnival, Ber-

wanger and Cook have invited friends and family down to

be part of the event. They will join thousands in Marion

Square in a toast that also has a charitable twist.

For every “celebratory slushy served in a champagne cup”

at thewedding, Carnival is donating $1 to theMedical Univer-

sity of South Carolina Children’s Hospital, up to $10,000.“We are truly excited to give Tina and Andy a wedding to

remember and to inject some fantastic, Carnival-style fun

and excitement into their very special day,” said Jim Berra,

chief marketing officer for Carnival Cruise Lines.

“The festivities will not only be meaningful for the bride

and groom, but for everyone at the finish festival who comes

by and joins us for a celebratory slushy in a champagne cup to

help raise funds for the MUSC Children’s Hospital.”

This year, BI-LO’s tenth year sponsoring the

Cooper River Bridge Run, also marks BI-LO’s

50th year delivering healthy and delicious

foods to their customers and to members of

the communities they serve.

On April 2, close to 40,000 people will come

from across the country to run this fantastic

race in Charleston. These runners share the

common goal of improving the quality of their

lives through better health and fitness. And BI-

LO is prepared to help them succeed.

Helping CustomersShop Healthy

An increasing number of people and com-

munities are turning to BI-LO to help them

develop a healthier lifestyle. One of BI-LO’s

newest health and wellness efforts is thrive!,a program designed to make it easy for shop-

pers to lead healthier, happier lives. BI-LO’s

registered dietitian and nutritional expert for

thrive! is Monica Amburn, who offers shoppers

free nutrition tips, recipes and wellness advice

– all with the goal of helping them eatwell, feel

great and save money.

thrive! is also making it easier for customers

to shop for specific dietary needs. New nutri-

tional tags identify organic foods, gluten-free

foods, heart-healthy options, lower-sodium

foods and many more specific nutritional op-

tions. And customers can visit bi-lo.com/thrive

for tips on topics ranging from how to eat right

with diabetes to ideas for last-minute healthy

family meals.

As always, runners can count on BI-LO to

deliver healthy, affordable products in every

department, like Walter’s guaranteed-fresh

fruits and vegetables, the Full Circle line of

certified all-natural and organic foods, and

all the pasta you might need to build energy

for the big race. And this year, look to BI-LO

thrive! for even more health and wellness

advice about post-race recovery and healthy

eating throughout the year. For specific ques-

tions about nutrition or wellness, shoppers

are welcome to e-mail Monica Amburn at

[email protected] or follow her on Twitter @

MonicaAmburnRD.

A History of Giving BackBI-LO does more for the community than

just helping its customers lead healthier lives.

It also has a long-standing commitment to

charitable giving and supporting communities

within its footprint.

Sponsorship of the Cooper River Bridge

Run is a great example of BI-LO’s passionate

community commitment. But it’s only the

tip of the iceberg. Last year, more than 300

organizations received funding or support

from BI-LO Charities, the nonprofit organiza-

tion that manages all of BI-LO’s charitable

initiatives.

BI-LO Charities also reaches shoppers

through programs like boostersplus®, in which

BI-LO donates 1 percent of customers’ pur-

chases to nonprofit organizations that the cus-

tomer has selected. Annual Summer and Holi-

day Hunger Relief programs give shoppers the

opportunity to purchase pre-packaged boxes

of food, which are donated to local food banks

for families in need.

“We are very fortunate to have BI-LO as a

partner in our fight to end hunger in the Low-

country. The Hunger Relief programs provide

thousands of our clients with much-needed

support,” says Jermaine Husser, executive di-

rector of Charleston’s Lowcountry Food Bank.

A Special Focus on KidsTo make sure that the Cooper River Bridge

Run weekend reaches people of all ages, BI-LO

will be participating in the Kids’ Run Expo on

the Friday before the big race. A fun event for

the whole family, the Kids’ Expo is focused on

keeping kids active and healthy, and features

multiple races and exciting exhibits designed

for kids of all ages.

“Through BI-LO’s generous sponsorship of

the Cooper River Bridge Run and BI-LO Chari-

ties’ numerous philanthropic efforts, families

across the Southeast have healthier and more

sustainable lives,” says Julian Smith, director of

the Cooper River Bridge Run and member of

the BI-LO Charities Board of Directors.

A Unique CharlestonConnection

With 15 Charleston-area stores, BI-LO has a

unique interest in promoting health and well-

ness in the Charleston area. The Charleston

community has been making great strides to-

ward becoming healthier. And BI-LO has been

very much a part of that effort. In addition to

sponsoring the Cooper River Bridge Run, BI-

LO Charities sponsors another very important

community race in Charleston – the Susan G.

Komen Race for the Cure.

“It has been a privilege to work with BI-LO

on the Susan G. Komen Lowcountry Race for

the Cure. They have provided us with grants

to help save lives across the 13 counties we

support,” says Executive Director of Susan G.

Komen Lowcountry Taffy Tamblyn.

And BI-LO’s Charleston-area support doesn’t

end there. In 2010, BI-LO Charities provided

more than $157,000 in grants to charities in

the Greater Charleston area, including United

Methodist Relief Center, Lowcountry Food

Bank, Meals on Wheels, MUSC and other local

charities that benefit children’s needs, educa-

tion and hunger relief. The organization’s annu-

al BI-LO Charity Classic Golf Tournament raised

the funds. When combined with the donations

made possible by BI-LO’s boostersplus® pro-

gram, contributions made by BI-LO and BI-LO

Charities to Charleston-area nonprofits last

year amount to more than $184,000.

BI-LO Charities, including a full list of organiza-

tions they support, visit www.bi-lo.com.
