Applied MathematicsThismoduleprovidesstudentswithanunderstandingofanalyticaltechniquesandthemathematicalskillsneededtosolveconstructionandengineeringproblems.Thismodulehasbeendesignedtoenablestudentstousemathematicalprocessestosolveconstruction,civilengineeringandbuildingservicesengineeringproblems.

Site Surveying ProceduresThismoduleisdesignedtodevelopstudentsskillsinusingmodernsurveyingequipmenttocarryoutarangeoftypicalsitesurveyingproceduresintheconstructionandbuiltenvironmentsector.Studentswillundertakesetting-outandcontrolofalignmentofconstructionwork.Thismoduledevelopstheunderstandingandskillsrequiredtoperformsurveyingcalculations.

Year 2 Semester AHealth, Safety & WelfareOncompletionofthismodule,studentswillunderstandcurrenthealth,safetyandwelfarelegislationapplicabletotheconstructionandbuiltenvironmentsector.Studentswillunderstandthemainrequirementsofaneffectivehealthandsafetypolicyanditssuccessfulimplementationintheworkplace.Studentswillunderstandhowtoidentifyandrecordhazards,assessrisksandselectappropriatecontrolmeasurestopreventormitigateillhealthandinjuriesonsite.

Measuring Tendering & EstimatingTheprinciplesandtechniquesofestimatingformanintegralpartofthetenderprocess.Theidentificationandselectionofcontractorsandtheavailablemethodologyarecontrastedintermsoftheirappropriatenessforconstructionprocurement.Studentswillgainanunderstandingofthecontractdocumentationrequiredforthetenderprocessalongwith the constraints on a tender both in thepre-stagesandpost-stagesofprocurement.

Group Project (Semester A & B)Thismodulewilldevelopstudentsskillsintermsoftheevaluationandresolutionofrealisticpracticalproblemsandtheabilitytoworkaspartofateam.Thismodulealsoenablestheapplicationofknowledge,understandingandskillsdevelopedinotherunits,andwherepossibleexperiencesfromwork,toamajorpieceofwork.Thismoduleisdesignedtobringtogethersmallgroupsofstudentsintoteamssothattheycancoordinatetheirindividualskillsandabilities.

Management Principles & ApplicationThismoduleprovidesstudentswithanunderstandingoforganisationaltheoryincludingthemesoforganisationalstructure;communication;culture;changeandethics.Managementtheoryinconstruction introduces topics such as the functions andprocessesofmanagement.Themodulewillalsocomprisethestudyofleadershipbehaviourandattitude;powerandcontrol;motivationandmorale;delegation;decisionmaking;groupsandteams;stressandcommunicationtheory.

Semester BConstruction Contract LawThismoduleexaminesthealternativemethodsofprocurementandformsofbuildingcontractfromtheJCT&NECcontractfamilies.Studentswillstudythedocumentsformingabuildingcontractandsub-contract;andtheobligationsandliabilitiesofthepartieswithinthecontract.Themodulealsoincludesthestudyofclausesfromtheconditionsofcontractrelatedtotime,cost,safetyandquality.Contractformationwhichwouldtypicallyincludethepartiesofthecontractandelementsrequiredtobepresentforthelegalformationofabindingcontractandtheselectionofappropriateprocurementmethods.

Construction ScienceThismodulefocusesontheeffectsofnaturalphenomenaonconstructionmaterialssuchaschemical;electro-chemical;bio-chemical;radiation;heatandcoldandwetanddryinteractionandalsothebehaviourofmaterialsunderloads;tension,compression,shear,bending,torsionanddeflection.Themoduleexaminesthebasicsofconstructionscienceintroducingtopicssuchasthermalinsulation;vapourcondensationandtheneedforventilation.Thispartofthemodulealsoincludestopicssuchasnaturalandartificiallighting&ventilation;smoke;fireandsoundinsulation.
