H001 - Introduction to Solid Fuel

Course ContentCandidates will learn about;

Types of solid fuels and the factors a� ecting fuel selection. Fuel preparation, seasoning and storage requirements. Appliance types, operating principles and appliance selection. The combustion process. Principles of safe combustion of solid fuels. Industry rules, regulations and standards. Identifying and responding to unsafe situations. The role of HETAS and its Competent Person Scheme.

Suitable for anyone interested in solid fuel, wood & biomass technology. If an applicant has no previous experience in the solid fuel sector this course is a good place to start.

Chimneys, � ues & terminals. Air supply & ventilation. Operating principles of dry solid fuel appliances. Correct installation of hearths & � replaces. Dry appliance selection. Commissioning & handover of dry appliances. Chimneys & connecting � ue pipes. Identi� cation of faults & the correct use of terminals. Commissioning & handover of dry solid fuel appliances. Service & Maintenance of dry solid fuel appliances.

Candidate prerequisite requirements listed overleaf.

Suitable for candidates who have relevant experience within the construction industry, including allied trades such as plumbing and heating installers.

Assessment Method - Theory & Practical.

Course Outcome & Certi� cation - A HETAS Certi� cate. Successful candidates can register with HETAS for the installation of dry solid fuel appliances. Successful H003/H003DS candidates can also progress on to other HETAS courses, detailed over the page & elsewhere in this booklet.

H003DS (De� ned Scope)The H003DS is a shortened version of the H003 course and is available to candidates who are not intending to progress on to take the H005DE Biomass Training & Assessment. The H003DS has all the similarities as the H003 but has a limited scope core which is covered in a shorter time. Candidates successfully completing the H003DS with the correct prerequisites may progress to;

H004 Wet Installer training & assessment. H006 System Chimney training & assessment. H008 Dry Pellet Stove training & assessment.

H003 (Full Scope)This is a full dry stove installer course suitable for candidates who may intend to progress towards the H005DE Biomass Training & Assessment.

Candidates successfully completing the H003 with the correct prerequisites may progress to;

H004 Wet Installer training & assessment. H005DE Biomass training & assessment. H006 System Chimney training & assessment. H008 Dry Pellet Stove training & assessment.

H003/H003DS Prerequisites;At least one of the following:

Demonstrable, appropriate previous work experience.

OFTEC technician with scope of work categories 101,102 or 105e.

Registered Gas Safe operative with work categories CCN1 and HTR1.

Registered member of GOMCS, APICS or NACS.

Prerequisites;Compulsory: HETAS H003 Dry Appliance Installer Course

H008 - Dry Pellet Stove Installer

Course Content Candidates will learn about;

Operating principles of automated pellet stoves. Dry pellet stove system design and speci� cation. Dry pellet stove appliance selection. Installation and commissioning of dry pellet stove appliances. Handover, service and maintenance of dry pellet stove

appliances.

Suitable for - Candidates who have successfully completed the H003 course and wish to expand their knowledge to include the installation of automated dry pellet stove appliances.

Assessment Method - Theory & Practical.

Course Outcome & Certi� cation - A HETAS Certi� cate. Candidates can extend the scope of their knowledge on the installation of automated dry pellet stove appliances.

H004 - Wet Appliance Installer

Course Content Candidates will learn about;

Wet system design & speci� cation. The installation of solid fuel appliances with boilers

incorporating vented systems. The principles of gravity circulation. System controls. Integration with other types of wet heating systems. Heating system commissioning handover. Service & maintenance. Discussions on the advancements in technology.

Suitable for - Candidates with a plumbing & heating quali� cations & who have successfully completed the H003 course.

Assessment Method - Theory & Practical.

Course Outcome & Certi� cation A HETAS Certi� cate. Successful candidates can extend their competence to include the installation of stoves with boilers.

Prerequisites;Compulsory: HETAS H003 Dry Appliance Installer Course and at least one of the following:

Evidence of OFTEC 101 or 102. Evidence of Gas Safe Registration - CCN1 & CEN1. Evidence of formal plumbing and heating quali� cation i.e City & Guilds 6129 and 6089, or QCF 6189; or other equivilant award.

Evidence of equivalent work experience on wet heating systems.

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certi� cation that provides evidence of competence.

H005DE - Biomass Appliance Installer

Course ContentCandidates will learn about;

Know the installation requirements of biomass appliances.

Selection of biomass appliances to meet customers’ needs.

Installation of biomass appliances Know the range of equipment used to commission biomass appliances.

Commissioning requirements of biomass appliances

Know the decommissioning requirements of biomass appliances.

Decommissioning of biomass appliances

Requirements for the routine service of biomass appliances.

Diagnosis of faults in biomass appliances

Methods of safely isolating appliances prior to routine service & maintenance.

Know how to rectify faults in biomass appliances

Service & maintenance of biomass appliances.

Suitable for - Plumbing, heating, oil, gas & building services engineers or any person with a building services background. Also suitable for existing HETAS registrants who wish to attain the skills necessary to install biomass boiler appliances.

Assessment Method - Theory & Practical.

Course Outcome & Certi� cation - A HETAS Certi� cate - Candidates who successfully complete this course can register with HETAS for the installation of log, chip & pellet biomass boilers on both the HETAS Competent Person Scheme and Microgeneration Certi� cation Scheme. On Competent Person Scheme registration HETAS also award the H003 and H004 Dry and Wet Installer competencies.

This course is aligned to National Occupational Standards (NOS) derived from the Quali� cations and Credit Framework (QCF).

Successful completion provides a route to MCS accreditation.

Prerequisites - Option 1Formal Quali� cation Entry Route

As per APPROVED CENTRE COURSE HANDBOOK FOR H005 and H005DE Biomass Courses v1.1.

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certi� cation that provides evidence of competence; or

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certi� cation that provides evidence of competence; or

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certi� cation that provides evidence of competence; or

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certi� cation that provides evidence of competence; or

N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certi� cation that provides evidence of competence.

Including: Water Regulations/Water Byelaws (WRAS or equivalent)

Prerequisites - Option 2Experienced Worker RouteOption 2 is an alternative route for applicants who wish to enrol on the H005DE course without the Option 1 course prerequisites (left). Completion of the HETAS Experienced Worker Route Portfolio may provide a suitable option. It is important that the portfolio is completed and approved by the training centre prior to attending a biomass course.HETAS are not able to provide a course certi� cate if the portfolio has not been completed and approved.Applicants are advised to contact their HETAS training centre for more information if this is a desirable route.In all cases the following could be acceptable and used as evidence to satisfy some or all of the Experienced Worker Portfolio.

Previous related work experience within the plumbing and heating industry. Already a competent person within a scheme possessing a history of installation experience.

Successful completion of an OFTEC training course 101,102 or 105e. A valid current gas safe registration with minimum categories of work: CCN1 and CEN1.

City & Guilds 6128, 6129 and 6132 technical certi� cates. Please Note: Stand-alone Vocationally Related Quali� cations (VRQs), including City & Guilds 6128, 6129 and 6132 technical certi� cates are not acceptable on their own as an alternative to NVQ Level 2 or 3 but may be used to help

support completion of the portfolio.

H006 - System Chimneys

Course Content - Candidates will learn about; Operating principles of chimneys, � ues and terminals. Design principles of metal twin-wall system chimneys for internal and external

installations. Installation requirements for metal twin-wall system chimneys and connecting � ue

pipes. Installation of twin wall insulated stainless steel system chimneys into residential

properties. Key legislative requirements and industry standards relating to the installation and

testing of metal twin-wall system chimneys. Be able to test a metal twin-wall system chimney installation. System components & good installation practice in relation to the various elements of

a residential structure.

Suitable for - Candidates who have successfully completed the H003 course.This is a one-day bolt on to the H003 course and can be taken at the same time or at a later date.

Assessment Method - Theory & Practical.

Course Outcome & Certi� cation - A HETAS Certi� cate. Successful candidates can demonstrate and register their competence in the installation and testing of prefabricated twin wall insulated system chimneys in residential properties.

The course covers system chimney design principles & methods for internal & external installations.

Prerequisites;Compulsory: HETAS H003 Dry Appliance Installer course or H005DE Biomass Installer course.

Suitable for HETAS Registered Installers wishing to maintain their registration as a Competent Person. HETAS Registered Installers are required to attend refresher training every � ve years - this ensures you are up to date with the latest standards, regulations & installation practices. This is a mandatory requirement for all Competent Person Schemes. HETAS has primarily developed Refresher Courses for Dry & Wet Installer courses H003 & H004.

HETAS Refresher Courses available to any person who has previously completed a HETAS course.

Typical Refresher Course Content includes; Changes to Building Regulations. Changes to Standards & Legislation. Health & Safety updates.

Calculations concerning air & � ue requirements. Commissioning & Handover. Updates in technology and integration. Theory & practical assessment.

Dry Installer Refresher H003 – Option 1; One Day Preliminary test with theory & practical assessment

Training material posted two weeks prior to preliminary test by registered post to candidate.

Candidate attends training centre and sits a preliminary test.

Candidate successfully completes test and is then allowed to continue with full one day assessment and exam.

Successful candidate claims certi� cation and has installer competencies renewed for 5 years.

If candidates are unsuccessful with the preliminary test then they may continue to Option 2.

Dry Installer Refresher H003 – Option 2; Two Days Training with theory & practical assessment.

Candidate attends � rst day refresher training. Candidate attends second day theory & practical assessment. Successful candidate claims certi� cation & has installer

competencies renewed for 5 years. If candidates are unsuccessful they have the option to attend a full

H003 course.

Wet Installer Refresher H004 Candidate attends a two-day training & assessment course. Successful candidate claims certi� cation & has installer

competencies renewed for 5 years.
