Mary Ellis is visiting Jack Hines for a few weeks this month.

Let your editor know by email or phone if you want your news in this publication and it will be added in this section.

GET WELL WISHESPlease keep these residents and friends in your prayers

as they battle illness or other crises in their lives: Bob Minter, Sue Day & Greg Wilson.

SUNFLOWERS ON THE RANCH

This article was promised for the June newsletter, but got lost somehow before print. Helen Sokolowski, Joe and Kate Sherman attended this local event on a beautiful May day and were lucky enough to speak with one of the owners about the motivations behind the events that are held 3 times each year, all with a different theme. January/February has a strawberry theme, May the sunflowers, October a corn maze. The ranch is located on Charlie

Taylor Rd. about 2 miles north of I-4 and a mile or so west of County Line Rd. For details on these events look online for www.foxsquirrelcornmaze.com. The following was taken from their website:

The Futch Family on the Single R Ranch in Plant City, Florida hosts these events . We were awarded the Farm Family of the year by Hillsborough County in 2015, we are very proud of this achievement as we have worked hard for many years. The ranch has been in our family since 1920, five (5) generations. Our Grandfather, Ralph, began putting together the ranch in the 20's and 30's which became 2000 acres of land for raising cattle and citrus. Our Dad, Alvin Futch, purchased the ranch and cattle operation in 1972 from his dad and continues to operate a smaller portion of the ranch today. And yes, the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren still help with the chores when dad needs an extra hand!

We spoke with one of the sons who organizes and hosts the events each year. The purpose behind the events is to support the farm going forward to protect it from development and preserve this family farm for future generations. By “farming people” during farm tourism events, the Futch family earns enough in work and fun filled weekends to supplement the farm's income from a smaller cattle operation and the 60 acres of strawberries they plant each year. Another goal of family is educate the people who come to their farm about farm life: what it looks like, how it works and possible farm careers to encourage new generations of agriculture careers. Mr. Futch also spoke a bit about the specific goals of the events: to provide a pleasant country atmosphere that is fun and family-friendly so visitors to the farm can get a taste of rural living while also learning a bit about farm careers.

We enjoyed a walk through the sunflowers, taking lots of pictures of flowers and spanish moss draped oak trees, browsing the vendor tents with crafts on display, eating a lunch prepared by friends of the family on picnic tables set up on the grounds, going through a small gift shop in a barn, visiting cattle and goats, watching children play on the activities set up around the grounds and strolling on a short nature walk back through a grove next to the event grounds. A wonderful, relaxing day! These events are a great slower paced place to take children who are visiting.

POOL SCHMOOZEEnjoy chatting with other members of our community

around the two pools here. Cooler weather sees most people around the main heated pool at the clubhouse and hotter weather find us late morning/early afternoon at the adult pool. New park residents – this is a great way to get to know your neighbors!

Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

THEY'RE BITING TODAY

“Poor Old fool,” thought the gentleman as he watched an old man trying to fish in a puddle of water outside of the bar. He decided to invite the old man inside for a drink. As they sipped their whiskeys, the gentleman thought he’d humor the old man and asked, “So how many have you caught so far?”

The old man replied, “You’re the eighth today.”

CHECKING FOR SPIES

George and Mary were celebrating their 50th anniversary and were spending the night in the famous Washington DC Watergate Hotel. After retiring at midnight Mary recalled the spy story at the Watergate and asked her husband to get up and check the room.

Disgruntled he looked behind the mirror, the pictures, under the bed and finally under the big circular carpet in the center of the room under the chandelier. Mary exclaimed, "There, look, there is a big plate there, look under it."

Fortunately George had his Swiss Army knife and unscrewed the four large screws, finding nothing.

Satisfied the room was not bugged they both went to sleep. Upon checkout the next morning the clerk asked them if they had any problems in their room last night. No, they replied and asked why he asked.

He told them that at midnight the room under them had the chandelier fall down in the center of their room.

LAKELAND MEMORIES

Wayne Vick, a lifelong resident of Lakeland is often asked what Lakeland was like in the “old days”. He has agreed to write a small column for our newsletter occasionally so we can enjoy his memories.

When I first arrived in Lakeland the town was a lot smaller than it is now. I don't remember exactly where the city limits were but they were a lot closer than they are now. I do remember that the south city limits were located where Wendys and Pizza Hut are on South Florida Ave. Across the street, located on the east side of Florida Ave that now houses TruBuilders was a small grocery store operated by a Mr. Attenburg. At the time the only way to get into the Highlands from Florida Ave was to turn at the grocery store and work your way through the orange groves, into the Highlands.

Most of the land east of Florida Ave and west of the Bartow Highway was taken up by orange groves. Needless to say, there were not many roads out there and certainly none of them were paved. It was possible to wander through the groves for miles and, yes, it was true that you could stop and pick the oranges right off the trees. The grove owner did not care if you helped yourself to a dozen or so of his oranges. Times changed and people became greedy and took advantage of a good thing. Thievery became a big problem, not only of fruit but of equipment as well. The growers were forced to post the groves and to enforce no trespassing of any type. Question! What is the difference between a Grove and an Orchard?

The north city limits extended up Florida Ave only to about where 98 north veers off and separates from Florida Ave. 98 north from Florida ave. to just north of Interstate 4 did not exist. Of course Interstate 4 did not exist either. At that time 98 north came south and into Lakeland on Providence Road and ended at North Street, now Memorial Blvd.

The west City limits ended on Central Ave. At the

north end of Central Ave is a building now occupied by Joyner Lumber Co. When I first came to Lakeland this building was occupied by a company called Mine and Mill Supply. Mine and Mill Supply, as you might guess, was a big supplier to the Phosphate mines around Polk County.

The East city limits ended on East Main Street at Longfellow Blvd. East Lake Parker Drive marked the city limits around Lake Parker. Now the east city limits meander all around the place and it is very hard to describe just where they are. As a matter of fact, the City of Lakeland moved the city limits out to include the new University built way out off of I-4 and Polk Parkway. They snaked the limits out to put the University in the city but the rest of the land along Combee Road is still out in the county. Go figure.

One final note: I can remember that it was quite a trip to be able to go to the Carpenters Home back then. Today we think nothing of going to Sams Club on 98 north. Same trip...just a different time.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

A short review of a local non-chain eatery. Contact the editor with suggestions for places to enjoy a meal alone or with friends where someone else does the work! I'm hoping this will be especially helpful for the new members of our community, but I think even longer-term residents might find a new favorite place to eat.

This month's restaurant was recommended by Helen Sokolowski, Nini's Cafe, 148 W Haines Blvd in Lake Alfred between the two one-way US92 lanes. Helen and Kate Sherman were in Lake Alfred visiting the library on the last Saturday of the month when the library sells books by the bag at $1 or $3 a bag. This cafe is located in a small business area with a neat flower shop and gift shop you can browse through before or after lunch. Nini's is open Tues-Sun 8am to 2:30pm and has some unique items on their menu. We tried their Hawiaan Salad with their homemade chicken salad on a bed of green leaf/romaine lettuce surrounded by pineapple and other fruits. Delicious! They claim Polk County's number one burger and feature a special baked good from a nearby bakery as well. Some of the tables have a collage top where area mementos are under glass so you can have some fun identifying what's there while you wait for your meal.

ZOO TRIP

I took my seven year old son to the zoo today. We were walking around and soon he said, “Look Dad! It's a frickin' Elephant!” I was shocked and slightly angry, as everybody was looking at us.

“What did you just call it?” I asked.

“It's a frickin' Elephant, it says so on the picture!” he said, and so it did, A F R I C A N Elephant.

FLORIDA ON A TANKFULLIGHTNER MUSEUM, SAINT AUGUSTINE

Stay cool during these dog days of summer by traveling in your air-conditioned car to Saint Augustine to visit the Lightner Museum 75 King Street in downtown Saint Augustine. This museum houses a large collection of Americana and decorative arts in the former Alcazar Hotel, one of the large hotels built by Henry Flagler in the 1880s to attract tourists to Florida. The museum collection was built by Otto Lightner. The former hotel attracted 25,000 visitors in the 1890s who enjoyed a Roman bath, large sunken swimming pool, sulfur baths, archery range, bowling alley, and other recreation facilities as well as the fantastic architecture of the hotel while wintering in warm, sunny Florida. It was often called “the castle of many happy return” by satisfied visitors. “Saint Augustine's Lightner Museum of Hobbies” opened in 1948 to showcase Otto Lightner's eclectic collection. As Chicago's once proud gilded age estates went up for sale during the depression, Otto purchased the lifetime collections of former millionaires for his museum.

The museum is open 9am to 5pm with the last admission at 4:30 pm. There are two mechanical music demonstrations daily at 11 am and 2 pm. You can enjoy lunch at the Cafe Alcazar, dining on tables set up on the former swimming pool bottom.

Hickory Hills HappeningsPage 12WOOD AND SWINK GENERAL STORE

For a taste of old Florida, take a drive up I-75 to Evinston, a sleepy old Florida town just north of Ocala. Among a collection of small homes is the Wood and Swink store: a grey wood sided, up on blocks front porch, National Register of historic places building still housing a general store serving this small community. The last comment posted in January 2016 mentions the front door: a collection of nails held together by a few planks that tell the story of numerous notices posted on that door. The building is made of heart pine and became a general store around 1900.

The Wood family has been part or sole owner of the store since 1906. Serving both as general store and the post office for many years this building has seen the joys and tragedies of the small community it serves. Engage the owner in conversation and he will share some of these stories with you.

Let your editor know if there is an event you enjoy so it can be shared with the rest of our community.

Stay active and stay happy!

We like it as follows: spread a thin layer of sour cream on a tortilla, spoon the chicken down the center, add salsa and/or lettuce if desired; roll up and serve.

Whisk together and pour over vegetables, toss to coat. Serve immediately, store leftovers up to 48 hours in the fridge.
