Using Your LAW SCHOOL Office Computer via Remote Desktop (from Windows 10) High Level Steps: Step A - Connect your home computer to CSU Campus via VPN. This is a CSU service. Everything you use in this step uses CSU CampusNet credential, i.e. your CSU ID and e-mail password. Step B - Connect to your office computer via Remote Desktop. This is a C|M|LAW service. Too much information:

You can only connect to your office computer using Remote Desktop when your home computer is on CSU’s network. Normally you cannot connect to CSU’s network unless you bring your computer on campus. However, VPN technology can put your computer virtually on campus.

Step A

Connect your home computer to CSU Campus via VPN

The following section is a document provided by CSU IS&T for VPN setup

VPN Client Installation for Windows 10

7/20/2017 CSU is using OpenVPN to create a Virtual Private Network (VPN). VPN is a network that uses the Internet to provide individual users with secure access to an organization’s network (in this case, CSU’s network).

Step 1 To install the OpenVPN client, on the computer you will be using to remotely connect to the CSU Campus Network (usually your home computer), open a web browser and go to https://openvpn.csuohio.edu Enter your 7 digit CSU ID number in the ‘Username’ field. Enter your Password in the ‘Password’ field. Click on ‘Go’.

Enter your CSU ID.

Enter your Password.

Click on ‘Go’.

Make sure to choose Login.

Step 4 – Click ‘Run’ once app opens up Click on the ‘Run’ button. Another dialog box will open up immediately after clicking run. Click ‘Yes’ on this dialog box. Once installation is completed, locate an orange logo in the systems tray in the bottom right corner of your screen. Right click the logo and choose ‘Connect to openvpn.csuohio.edu’.

Click on ‘Run’ button.

Right click the OpenVPN logo and click on the ‘Connect’ option

Step 5 A dialog box will open up asking for you to log in with your CSU ID and Password.

Step 6 Locate the orange OpenVPN logo again in the system tray again. The green check mark means you are successfully connected to the VPN.

During the installation process, a shortcut was created on your desktop. Next time you want to start your VPN connection, double click the icon on your desktop.

Once you’re connected to the VPN, you will be able to remotely control your office computer by follow the Remote Desktop Connection Guide found here: https://www.csuohio.edu/sites/default/files/remotedesktopwin.pdf

Green check mark means connected.

Click on the ‘Connect’ buttonbutton.

Reporting Problems If you have any problems during the installation or use of the VPN client, please email [email protected] and include a thorough description of the problem (attaching screen prints would be helpful).

Step B

Connect to your office computer via Remote Desktop

1. Launch Remote Desktop Connection on your home computer from Start Windows Accessories Remote Desktop Connection The icon looks like this:

2. Under “Computer”, type in your office computer’s IP Address. (e.g. 137.148.132.234) Please ask your IT staff for your office computer’s IP address if you don’t know it. Write it down: My Desktop IP Address is ____.____.____.____

3. Click on “Show Options”, in the “User Name” field, type in LAW\xxxxxxx, where xxxxxxx is your 7-digit CSU ID. Check the “Allow me to save credentials” box.

4. Click on the “Connect” button.

Note: if you get asked about verifying a certificate, just check the “Do not ask again…” box and click “Yes” to allow connection.

5. Your desktop will now show in a large window and you can use all of your programs on your office computer. When done, click on the “Start” button [1] on the office computer, and choose “Sign out” [3] from the User menu [2].

6. Lastly, remember to exit/disconnect from OpenVPN. Click on the OpenVPN icon on the taskbar, and choose Exit/Quit/Disconnect.

WARNING: DO NOT “Shut down” from your office computer. You will not be able to remote back in if your office computer is off.
