Accreditation status of the Higher Certificate in Film and TV Make-Up Design:

The Higher Certificate in Film and TV Make-Up Design is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), qualification ID 96801.

Admission requirements for the Higher Certificate in Film and TV Make-Up Design:

• NSC or equivalent with a minimum 30-39% or better in the language of learning (English) • Minimum of 30-39% or better in four (4) 20 credit bearing subjects (excluding LO)

International student requirements:

International students must ensure that:• they have an equivalent qualification;• the equivalent qualification is recognised by SAQA; and that• they have a valid study VISA issued in the name of Prestige Academy that covers the duration of their

studies.

The Student initially applies with Prestige Academy to study towards a specific qualification. Prestige Academy is currently in the process of a business transfer to become part of STADIO. This will result in the Student obtaining a STADIO qualification when the programme has been completed successfully.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAMMEThis is an entry level higher education qualification with a vocational industry-oriented focus. It aims to equip students with basic introductory knowledge combined with cognitive and practical skills to pursue further studies in the visual arts field. It emphasises focused principles and concepts together with specific procedures and techniques pertaining to different make-up genres. Since this a career-orientated programme, a balance is maintained between theory and the ability to apply knowledge. Complementary to this, the programme offers opportunities for learning through exposure to the make-up industry. Once qualified, the student can pursue a career as cosmetic/make-up expert, special effects make-up artist, film or stage make-up artist, and freelancing amongst other things.

MODULE DESCRIPTIONBody and Face Painting

This module introduces the student to the unique art form that is body painting. The students will learn how to use the human body and its natural curves as a moving canvas. The students will learn how to create unique designs, prepare the model and complete an application effectively. This includes reproducing an image. They will be exploring the use of a variety of products and equipment used in body and face painting. The history of body art and tattooing will also be highlighted as well as the creative skills and opportunities which will be available to them.

Make-up in Fashion and Beauty

This module explores the different scenarios the make-up artists will find themselves in, from fashion shows to photographic make-up (including editorial and advertising), music videos, catalogue and wedding photography. The students will learn the importance of keeping their make-up kits clean and organized, as well as how to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times in the industry. Different make-up techniques for a variety of shoots and productions will be investigated and applied for both contemporary and classic styles.

Character Make-up and Facial Hair

This module introduces the student to the art of character formation and the use of facial hair. Students will be able to explore different characters for various areas in the hair and media industry. The student will demonstrate ways to create beards on models.

Casualty Effects and Prosthetics

Effects: planning the effects; Styles of injury e.g. wounds; bullet wounds; bruises; cuts and wounds with colouring; deep wounds; slit wrists; slit throat; bruises and black eyes; scratches; stitched wounds; burns; acne; dirtying down; dirtying down and blood; tooth blacking and dirtying; scars; contracted scars; broken noses; bullet wounds; Illness e.g. “drug addict’ effect; “drug addict’ effect using collodion. Equipment and materials; e.g. water sprays; gelatine.

Professional Practice

The aim of the Professional practice is to expose the student to various business aspects and opportunities. The student will gain insight in the health and safety practices and procedures within the industry. This module will also explore presentations skills which are vital when communicating with clients or various businesses for selling and information purposes. Specifically focusing on the purpose of presentations in customer relations, different types of communication and techniques for proper planning of a presentation and using suitable presentation media.

Introduction to Entrepreneurship

This module introduces the student to the entrepreneurial world. Students will explore entrepreneurship and the small busi-ness environment in a South African context. They will gain an understanding of the key characteristics needed to succeed as a South African entrepreneur and the importance of strong entrepreneurial leaders and entrepreneurial teams. This module will assist students to use creativity to generate business ideas and how to assess these ideas for feasibility and viability. Finally, students will learn how to take a feasible and viable business idea and compile a basic business plan for their idea.

Media Make-up as a career

This module focuses mainly on the foundation of becoming a professional make-up artist. Professionalism, personal appear-ance and being a team player are all an integral part of becoming a sought after make-up artist. Skin management and prepa-ration is vital to a successful application, students will be taught how to analyse and prepare the skin in order to get a smooth and healthy surface to work on. The students will also focus on the principals of colour and how to work with it effectively, as well as the working environment. Tinting and tweezing will also be included to facilitated make-up applications.

Make-up Techniques

This module will introduce the importance of planning any make-up application and time management. The students will develop plans for specific scenarios and work to a pre-established set of time scales. This is essential, as in most productions “time is money”. Make-up enhancement techniques are explored. The students will also focus on faces, head shapes and bone structure and how to maximise a model’s best features. The students will learn how to apply the contouring technique to the seven different face shapes and will discover different ways to camouflage a variety of different marks, skin afflictions and even tattoos.

Make-up in TV, Cinematography and Theatre

This module focuses more closely the use of optimal characterisation. This is a fundamental part of make-up artistry. It allows the student to create more realistic characters by analysing the given subject’s age, race, heredity and health. Students will use this when breaking down a script and generating make-up ideas. This will be combined with the use of continuity, which allows a make-up artist to effectively age a character or keep the character on an accurate time line during production. The students will also learn more on their specific roles as part of a production team.

The students will understand the differences between working in large and small auditoriums and how that will affect the spe-cific style of make-up which needs to be applied. They will also explore the different effects of lighting on make-up. Working with wax is an essential aspect of theatre make-up, they will learn how to work with wax effectively in order to create noses and other such protrusions.

Historical Hair and Make-up

This module focuses on:

Research: prehistory people; e.g. the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans the middle ages; the sixteenth century; the sev-enteenth century; the eighteenth century; the nineteenth century; processes of period hair and make-up; the twentieth century (the 1920’s, 1930’s, 1940’s, 1950’s; 1960’s; 1970’s, 1980’s; 1990’s and modern times.

The key factors underpinning the importance of achieving period, culture and emotion, paying particular attention to detail.

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a concept associated with career-orientated and vocational training. At this institution, experiential learning specifically refers to job shadowing at a company or organisation. It is of short duration and does not involve any actual work. This is reserved for all higher certificate programmes (NQF 5) that are only offered over a one-year period.
