SCAD & the Bike Rack The Background:
Charles Ellis Montessori Academy (CEMA) gets Travel Plan Assistance; local SRTS Committee meets and looks at barriers and potential solutions. Plan drafted.
The Problem:
CEMA doesn’t have adequate bike parking & no where to put a bike rack.
The Connection:
Savannah Bicycle Campaign - John Bennett, Executive Director
The Solutions: The Opportunities:
Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) Industrial Design Research Classes – R Campbell, Professor

SCAD & the Bike Rack
-
SCAD & the Bike Rack
• Industrial Design Research (2 classes – 2nd year students)
• Not an actual bike rack design project • Learning experience for students • Detailed research
• Presentations and Q&A • Observation • Interviews • Surveys • Media (internet, etc.)
• Analyze the Data and create report of findings • Identify opportunities (not solutions!)

Proposed Opportunities included • Bike Parking at nearby “meeting spots” like
Parks • Back entrance for bike parking • Re-route transportation pick-up areas (buses
and cars) • Education for bicycle safety • Utilize School roof • Include bike repair with rack and education • Partially underground bike rack • Bike share
-
SCAD & the Bike Rack
Next Steps • Problem and Research potentially passed to
other classes at SCAD • Research Reports are available • Eventually to Studio Class(es) • Ultimately…….. A bike parking solution!
• Immediate possibilities:
CEMA can submit request to City of Savannah for a bike rack at nearby park for overflow parking
