JANUARY-SEPTEMBER 2011 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friend of Highlander,

The air is filled with unsettling electricity these days but it is also filled with movement and

hope. In 2011 we saw Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street spreading like wildfire across the country and world; the taking over of state houses to defend workers in Wisconsin; and Kentucky activists working to stop mountaintop removal sitting-in at their capitol.

At Highlander, we are nurturing, supporting and connecting the work of people organizing for change: young undocumented immigrants taking on repressive immigration laws; Occupy Wall Street growing in the South; communities organizing against voter repression policies and tactics; workers and unions re-energizing the country and world to demand much needed change; Appalachian people working against mountaintop removal; rural activists working to stop the toxic pollution of their communities and other forms of environmental devastation. We worked to build economic literacy and help communities explore sustainable economies. We testified in Congress about broadband access because people we work with are being left behind in technology advances that shape our communications. We are strategically infusing art and culture into policy campaigns in communities and we weave art and culture throughout all our work at Highlander as well. We help build and support the leadership of youth organizers making pertinent changes in areas of immigration, education, economic justice, LGBT issues and more.

It will be the connections made among people, groups and issues that will strengthen these movement times to shift the world away from inequality and violence to justice and peace. Highlander’s contribution through tools of popular education, cultural organizing, multilingual capacity building and participatory research creates critical spaces for those working for change to learn from each other, and sparks the creation of such spaces elsewhere. We have seen that when people better understand each other and see the common threads, that strong, broad based movement-building blossoms.

Yes, the air is full of change. Thank you for being part of that change. Thank you for your generosity to help Highlander continue its critical work of helping spark that change.

Highlander continues to be a beacon for justice, a progressive institutional model and training entity for the South, country and world.

We understand that where much is given much is expected. We are excited to share with you updates and impacts from our January-September 2011 work.

— By Seed Lynn Heathcock, II, Cultural Organizer, written during his work with the Kentucky Environmental Foundation during the Zilphia Horton II project

At Highlander I was reminded about how humanizing education and organizing must be. The workshop, the welcoming and inspiring staff and the historical archives in the library gave me common sense tools that helped me root my work in the experiences and lives of those I work with who come to learn, share and build towards collective action.”

Highlander’s Cultural Workers Weekend & the We Shall Overcome Fund

At Highlander, cultural organizing is a program and a methodology woven into all programs. Highlander conducted a cultural workers workshop with 40 people during Labor Day weekend, sharing best practices and challenges

from work at the nexus of art, culture and social change as it manifests in the South and Appalachia. Participating artists and cultural organizers, including visiting artists from Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea, addressed such issues as Gulf Coast restoration, immigration, the economy and the environment.

The We Shall Overcome Fund Committee, which grants monies to communities doing cultural organizing work in the South and Appalachia also met at this time. The We Shall Overcome Fund is a committee comprised of movement elders and social justice leaders.

I was asked if I ever get tired. I thought about it and decided that I don’t. I get invigorated. You can’t be around the type of people who want to make change and get tired. People take this little bit of money and expand on it. It is amazing to see what people can do with the money. We also found out that people were working in towns with other people who were doing similar work. When we brought them to Highlander we connected those people. It is not just about the money but the process as well. From SNCC, I learned how to be an organizer. I learned to work with other folks. It’s been a wonderful experience and no I don’t get tired.”

— Faye Bellamay Powell, We Shall Overcome Fund co-founder talks about the impact of the Fund in community

HIGHLIGHTS FROM HIGHLANDER’S EDUCATION WORK

The Zilphia Horton Cultural Organzing Project

In the second phase of the Zilphia Horton Cultural Organizing Project, Highlander addressed social and economic justice issues in three rural communities in Tennessee, North Carolina and Kentucky.

Highlander supported Community Partners to expand their outreach and effectiveness in issues-based campaigns through the use of art and culture. These campaigns included the Dream Act, stopping anti-immigrant bills at the state level in southern states, environmental regulations at local and state levels and voting access.

Seeds Of Fire 2011This year at the 13th annual Seeds of Fire leadership and organizing institute,

30 youth and 15 adult allies attended from Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The focus of the institute was the

U.S. educational system and the criminalization of youth of color. Participants also focused on independent media, including the use of video, audio, zines and quilts. Youth traveled to the Green McAdoo Museum to learn about the Clinton 12 and the fight to desegregate Clinton High School in Tennessee.

The summer institute is the meeting place where youth leaders exchange ideas and deepen their understanding of organizing. “Seeds of Fire is with me on a daily basis in the work I do in my community,” commented Esmeralda Baltazar, a Seeds of Fire participant from San Antonio, TX. “The love between youth and adult allies at Seeds of Fire, the advice, and the sharing of personal experiences as adult allies was incredibly humbling and brought me back to why I do the work I do. Seeds of Fire had an immediate impact in our work at

Fuerza Unida. Right after the young people facilitated a workshop on Media Justice at the camp, they asked to have a Skype conversation with other young people in their community of San Antonio to

share what they learned. Another immediate impact was the way that I see the work of the elders in my community and how to develop more effective young community leaders. I came back to San Antonio more willing to organize the elders to work in tandem with young leaders.”

SOF also took exponential steps this year with the establishment of a Seeds

of Fire Advisory Committee, which serves among other roles, as the decision making body for a small re-granting program made possible by the Rockefeller Brother’s Fund.

Each day we grow more and more…Different cultures, backgrounds, gender, skin color, sexuality, tall, short, and all. We begin to realize just how equal we really are and by not forgetting about our elders, for they are the roots of the tree of change we take with us their knowledge and do not forget our Power of the youth to Unite this Nation and make our voices HEARD” — SOF song, written by Karol Franco

Any social justice work is an intergenerational process and we rely on our mothers and children.”

The Racial Healing and Equity Project

The Racial Healing and Equity project worked with participants to: 1) Recall and Remember individual and collective experiences of race; 2) Record and Reflect individual and collective race stories through documentation, reflection, and analyze experiences and stories rooted in the larger world. 3) Repair and Recommend by rebuilding and

strengthening relationships, make policy recommendations and advance Highlander’s capacity to build healthy internal and external relationships in support of an antiracist social change agenda.

In our work this year, we oriented community process leaders from East Tennessee, Little Rock, AK and Nashville,TN and supported their work in local communities. These leaders were trained in Highlander’s key methodologies and in Kingian Nonviolence from our partners Layfatte and Associates. They also learned about the story circle process from the Carpet Bag Theatre. With these tools, community process leaders began to engage in conversations with southern communities to lift up different “race stories.”

Internally, we have also been engaged in exploring our “race stories.” The entire Highlander staff and board have participated; activities included anti-racism trainings, racial identity caucuses, learning circles and journaling. We believe this work is vital to strengthening our work in community and with each other as an organization working for social change.

I need this space to refresh my mind, and reaffirm my purpose. Not how does the community fit into me, but how I fit into the community.” — Teumbay (Tee) Barnes, Greensboro Justice Fellow

We are pleased to introduce the members of the inaugural class of Greensboro Justice Fund Fellows at Highlander: Teumbay (Tee) Barnes, Darrell

Bouldin, Ahmané Glover, Marcus Hill, and Maria Quezada.

Highlander is honored to have been chosen, along with the Beloved Community Center in Greensboro, NC, to carry on the social and economic justice legacy of the Greensboro Justice Fund (GJF). For thirty years, the Greensboro Justice Fund worked to increase capacity of the progressive movement by supporting over 300 cutting-edge, community based organizations working to end all forms of discrimination and exploitation. The Fund was established

to honor and carry on the work of César Cauce, Mike Nathan, Bill Sampson, Sandy Smith and Jim Waller, five community organizers who were murdered in Greensboro, NC on November 3, 1970 by the Ku Klux Klan and Nazis.

Greensboro Justice Fund Fellows at Highlander began their year-long fellowship focused on learning, thinking and acting by attending a popular education and community organizing social change workshop at the Highlander Center. During this workshop fellows worked together as a class as well as part of a larger learning circle of people from around the country.

Immigration and Globalization Highlander continued to work with national, statewide and local groups

to move forward fair and just immigration policies. We also worked to integrate immigration issues, understanding and action, into non-

immigrants groups. The impact has been to help stop regressive legislation in some states in the South. We helped to organize the Southeast Immigrant and Refugee Rights conference that was held in early June, in conjunction with the Rights Working Group regional membership meeting. We served on the planning committee for Turning the Tide II and led a multilingual popular education workshop with the Coalition of Latin American Organizations in Western North Carolina.

Before [Highlander] I had the assumption that my age means I don’t have the experience necessary to provide meaningful opinions on social justice and organizing. I am leaving behind that fear. My thinking process has changed since I’ve been here, and I plan to take that with me.”

When you’re undocumented, and you feel like you’re American, I think it’s pretty tough knowing that when every one of your friends is getting their driver’s license, you can’t, it’s pretty sad.”

Page 8: Highlander Center 2011 Annual Report

Since learning from Highlander’s Education Team in my English graduate class last year and participating in an onsite Highlander Popular Education training, I have greatly altered the way I teach and interact with the world.

I since have become involved in the East Tennessee Racial Healing and Equity project. One method of that program is story telling. Through the story circle process, I was able to listen to people’s powerful race stories; people were so committed to the process and would come back again and again to go deeper. I learned about ways that I listen; tell stories, and how to fit into a group. I am so used to being a teacher and a student and figuring out how to fit into a circle that equally shares knowledge has been important. It’s hard to integrate Popular Education into a formal educational setting but that is the direction I am going in. I am almost finished with my English degree in literature and have since also become trained in ESL. Highlander helped me better understand how teaching literature can work beyond the academy and become community directed. Right now I am working on a literacy project in Texas — I am using popular education as a frame.”

— Julie Tyler, Social Change Workshop Participant and East Tennessee Racial Healing Advisory Member

During my first trip to Highlander I sat around the campfire with a group of organizers and my Greensboro Justice Fellow cohort. Watching the fire lick the summer air, we exchanged stories with each other and then we began to sing. The songs we sang come from a long tradition of freedom fighters and social justice workers; many of whom have also met and strategized at Highlander. The lyrics to a song, “we are climbing up the ladder till we reach the top of the hill” echoed around us. As we sang, we joined the voices of our organizing ancestors. I still remember this fireside exchange; it has helped to re-energize my work and reminds me that we are not alone in our work. We are not isolated in our mission. Highlander is more than workshops. Highlander is culture, tradition and more importantly its people. Its people that take a chance on believing in love over hate. People daring to take action and work on challenges that we have been conditioned to ignore. People who are the change that we want to see in the world.”

Economics, Solidarity Economy and Economics EducationHighlander served on the board of the Solidarity Economy

Network for the third year. We co-planned, organized and recruited for the Southern Grassroots Economy Project, a

gathering of Southern and Appalachian cooperative and organizing leaders/solidarity economy practitioners. Other partners in this work include the Fund for Democratic Communities and Project South. Over 30 leaders attended including youth from STAY and youth cooperatives in GA, NC and Texas. We also led a popular education and organizing workshop with cooperative leaders and domestic rights organizers in Boston.

8

Page 9: Highlander Center 2011 Annual Report

Highlander helped begin this network and has served on its leadership

team for the past 3 years. SURJ (Showing up for Racial Justice) is a national network of groups and individuals organizing white people for racial justice. Through community organizing, mobilizing, and education, SURJ moves white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice with passion and accountability. SURJ connects people across the country while supporting and collaborating with local and national racial justice organizing efforts. SURJ provides a space to build relationships, skills, and political analysis to act for change. The network held their first in-person leadership team planning retreat at Highlander in August.

AppalachiaAs part of the Central Appalachia Regional

Network(CARN), Highlander has participated on the Green Jobs team which also connects

to mountaintop removal and energy issues. We continue to support an effort for younger Appalachians to connect and organize, called Stay Together Appalachian Youth (STAY). STAY is a youth led and run organization and in February held the first Appalachian LGBT gathering in the region. STAY also organized an Appalachian youth summer institute which brought together youth from all over the region to connect, deepen relationships and learn from each other. The institute focused on such topics as sustainable opportunities for youth, fiddling, community philanthropy, educational reform and cultural work. In addition to this support work, Highlander was also central in the launch of the Emerging Leaders Network. This Appalachian network focuses on bridging the gap between adult and youth organizers and building the organizing capacity of Appalachia.

Social Change and National WorkshopsOur Social Change workshop was held

in March with 30 participants from East Tennessee, the US and Canada.

From May 31-June 4th the 3rd Annual Wacky Workshop Workweek was held with 20 participants that included students, youth organizers, educators and veteran organizers.

For the spring 2011 semester we led an ENG 589 Graduate level Rhetoric class at the University of Tennessee on Popular Education with 12 students. The class was taught by various Highlander staff and covered the topics of civil rights, education reform, immigration, nuts and bolts of running a workshop, and highlander history. These students also participated in a Highlander Social Change Workshop.

What was great was being here, in the space that I have always read about. Not just the land, but the energy, the songs, practicing actual popular education, sweating, cooperation and hard conversations.”

— Workshop Workweek Participant

Language Justice Highlander continues to play a key role in the region by building

the capacity of people to organize across language and culture. We are part of the multilingual strategies at the Communities

Creating Healthy Environments (CCHE) national gathering with groups who work across language. We have been promoting language justice and multilingual social justice spaces for many years, helping connect constituencies to build a broader movement. Core partners include the Praxis Project and Colectivo Flatlander.

Children’s Camp The theme for 2011 was “Change

Yourself, Change The World.” Children’s camp participants moved

from one-on-one issues with peers to neighborhood and community issues to global issues. Hershey’s Chocolate was the Children’s Camp global issue.

Camp participants watched “The Dark Side of Chocolate,” organized and produced by Green America’s Fair Trade Program (www.GreenAmerica.org) (www.FairTradeAction.org.), International Labor Rights Forum, Global Exchange & Oasis USA through a program called “Raise the Bar Campaign” (www.RaiseTheBarHershey.org). The campers became very passionate about wanting to “change themselves (not buy their favorite chocolate) & therefore help change the world (help eradicate child abuse, labor, kidnapping, and trafficking).” At the end of the camp session, campers wrote a letter on flip chart paper in the circle room at Highlander. It included hand written text as well as drawings; the letter was folded in a large manila envelope and sent to the CEO of Hershey’s. Hershey’s sent the accompanying response.

Highlander Celebrates a Spirit of Resistance

Starting in July friends of Highlander hosted educational gatherings all over the nation, highlighting Highlander’s Spirit of Resistance.

The Spirit of Resistance gatherings marked important milestones in Highlander’s history. 50 years ago, the State of Tennessee seized Highlander’s original property in Monteagle, TN and revoked the charter of the Highlander Folk School. In spite of this, Highlander persevered and in 2011 we celebrated 40 years since the purchase of our current location in New Market, Tennessee. These gatherings brought together new and old friends to reflect, and build deeper alliances with each other in the movement for social change.

As an immigrant, one thing I have had to do in my life in this country is to decide which history I am going to be a part of. Going to Highlander helped me make a better connection to the history that I want to be a part of. I work for a national women’s organization in a Christian denomination with this tiny group of anti-racist women. When you are a small group in an organization with a membership of 300,000, that meets only once a year and struggles with funding, it is easy to get discouraged. I took them to Highlander, and for these women, it was the spirit of the place that really helped stir something in their souls. They were able to do incredibly powerful, radical work. They came up with several areas they want to work on, including, as women, looking at the organization’s mission from an anti-racist perspective. We are going back this fall.”— Unzu Lee, at a Spirit of Resistance celebration, Louisville, Kentucky, September, 2011

I always tell people that I teach at Duke, and I learn at Highlander.”— Peter Wood at a Spirit of Resistance celebration, Mebane, North Carolina, August, 2011

Groups who met at Highlander

From January to September 2011 approximately 2,200 people visited Highlander, benefited from our workshops and received support from us in their social change work. At Highlander, we understand that it is the experiences of people shared across generation, culture, race, and movement that will help propel a powerful social justice movement forward.

Mission: Highlander serves as a catalyst for grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the South. We work with

people fighting for justice, equality and sustainability, supporting their efforts to take collective action to shape their own destiny. Through popular education, participatory research, and cultural work, we help create spaces — at Highlander and

in local communities — where people gain knowledge, hope and courage, expanding their ideas of what is possible. We develop leadership and help create and support strong, democratic organizations that work for justice, equality and sustainability in their own communities and that join with others to build broad movements for social, economic and restorative environmental change.
