EUROPEAN BOOK CLUBCharterhouse of ParmaStendhal’s ‘’Charterhouse of Parma’’ is an epic and yet intimate tale of political intrigue and erotic frustration, set in the (largely fictionalized) princely court of Parma during the author’s own time. Almost since the moment it appeared, in 1839, Stendhal’s last completed novel has been considered a masterpiece.

A TOAST TO ILLNESSCorrado Paina’s book presentationCorrado Paina in conversation with Ontario Parliamentary Poet Laureate George Elliott Clarke will present his new poetry collection. “A toast to Illness” is a direct poetic testimony from the author’s extended affliction with cancer. Although he survived, he delivers no comforting tale of recovery, but a frank and unflinching account, piece by piece, of a harrowing ordeal that would very likely be fatal. Poem after poem authentically registers the harshest impacts of pain and distress, powered by jolts of mordant irony, black humour, and a darkly compelling imagination.
