Dr Harish Iyer, Managing Director & CEO, Shantha Biotech and Chairman, BioPharma World Expo 2015, chaired the 1st

Central Advisory Board meeting in Mumbai to set the tone for the international conference for Biopharma that would be organised concurrently during CHEMTECH World Expo 2015. Discussions during the conference should set the roadmap for translating Honourable Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Make in India’ specifically for the biotechnology sector for the pharma industry and also align with the aim to highlight the kind of role pharma-biotechnology sector can play to enable his dream of building a healthy nation.

L-R: Dr Himanshu Gadgil, Senior VP- R&D/RA (Biotech Unit), Intas Pharmaceuticals, Mr Hemant Shetty, CEO, Chemtech Foundation, and Dr. Harish Iyer, MD and CEO, Shanta Biotechnics & Chairman, CAB, BioPharma World Expo 2015 during the meeting.

Realising Highest Potential of Indian BioPharma Sector

Dr Harish Iyer noted the tremendous growth that the Indian pharma industry has achieved over the last few years has been driven by the strong skill set in analytical and process chemistry. He expressed that biologics is emerging as a very strong segment for the future of the healthcare industry and growth of many top pharma companies is driven by biologics. But it is more complex than the traditional pharma sector, he added.

The government has set the ambitious goal to become a leading global producer of affordable biopharma products by 2020. A PWC report has projected Indian biopharma industry to touch USD 200 billion by 2020 driven by the shift in usage from

conventional drugs and biopharma drugs. Reiterating the vision statement of the Honourable Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, Dr Iyer emphasised upon the need of creating the ecosystem to enable Indian biopharma industry to realise its highest potential as the critical factor to realise the ambitious goal set up by the government. The members of the board resonated with this statement and have recommended various suggestions including the need efforts from the Indian government in terms of creating conducive environment and proper delivery mechanism to realise the true potential of capabilities of Indian biopharma sector.

The board members have structured the programme and will give it the final touch during the 2nd board meeting which will be scheduled in the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology in New Delhi in December.

"I am very excited to see Speciality Chemical forum evolving in India. There are not many speciality chemicals forums currently operating in the country and this one is going to bring in a number of key players in the entire value chain including the producers, end users the people who are shaping up the future with respect to Speciality Chemicals together..."

"...We want to make it different from the normal seminars where people just talk about products and services. Here, we want to highlight the opportunities we have as a speciality chemical industry in terms of demand creations, ... how well our downstream industries are using that opportunity and creating markets for them and then look at how these unmet needs of the industry can be met…"

As one of the new initiatives towards expanding the scope of the events, CHEMTECH and NACE International Gateway India Section

(NIGIS), have partnered for the first time to step up the campaign towards creating greater awareness about corrosion. Corrosion cost for India stands at USD 67 billion across multiple industries. If preventive measures were taken, the government could have saved up to USD 22 billion said Dr Samir Degan, Chairman, NACE India Gateway Section talking about the grave concern that is eating away large chunk of country’s GDP.

Highly corrosive nature of chemicals processing industry increases the risk of equipment failures and unprecedented downtimes manifolds due to corrosion and results in unprecedented shutdowns that result in heavy losses for the chemical manufacturers.

Dr U Kamachi Mudail, Associate Director, IGCAR, and Dr Degan, have designed the one and a half day conference to holistically discuss the underlying problem of corrosion for the chemical processing industry. Focused

Innovation’ where in the day-1 would be focused on Inspiring Leadership and day-2 on the latter, Igniting Innovation. The aim of SOP is to bridge the gap between the industry and the academia and encourage free exchange of knowledge through this platform.

The programme would involve ‘Icon Lectures’ where industry leaders would talk about their experiences, their journey of reaching the top. Based on tagline of

SOP – Developing Future Leaders – panel discussions would be held on both the days.

A Pilot Plant Display will also be organised among other activities. A special pavilion will be set up for students to display the selected pilot plants in the exhibition grounds to display the work done by the students to the industry during all 4 days of the event.
