Fan- tastic photo album as usual. I am thinking of changing the name of my Prose to “Correspondence from A- broad” as we will be away again for the June newsletter! (Just giving Kate a heads-up.) Maybe the VP would like to put pen to paper! Congratulations to those hardy club members who travelled to Craigie on what I believe turned out to be a bleak day. Your dedication to the club and masochism is legendary. There were some very commendable swims rec- orded along with a couple of flipper awards. Our next mini competition will take the form of a postal swim against Hervey Bay club in Queensland. Most of you will know Paula and Terry Hewitt who relocated to that lovely part of the country and they have conceived a plan for our clubs to compete against each other in a fun event. They will hold their event on Sunday 19th June and we will be running ours on Monday 20th June. It is a team format and we require 20 swimmers on the night to swim. The races are 50 mtrs of each stroke. Please let Lesley or Stuart know if you are available to compete. You can elect to swim just one event if that works for you. The highlight of May turned out to be the volunteering effort from the club at the Sufferfest Tri Event on Rottnest. Gwyn and I headed over to the island on the Friday in charge of six young volunteers from Central TAFE as we were not able to provide club members and they had a great day and were very keen workers. We were allocated accommodation in a Caroline Thompson Cabin overnight and were up bright and early on Saturday morning to start work and greet 18 club members off the “dawn” ferry (including Sandra’s co-opted friend Linette). It was a beautiful sunny day and everyone performed their allocated duties with enthusiasm and happy smiles for the athletes. At the end of the afternoon, we all gathered in the pub for a well-deserved bever- age and a fun de-brief of the day’s activities. We all headed home, but, because we were asked to provide four more volunteers for Sunday, Lesley, Lynne, Sandra and I set off again on the “dawn” ferry for another day. I’m not sure if it was the 5 hours sleep or the adrenaline that kept us going but we had a great day and a lot of laughs. Again…de-brief at the pub (in the pour- ing rain) playing UNO before jumping on the ferry. Although the organisers are still fairly disorganised, we are seasoned tri-event volunteers now and did have a terrific weekend. Hopefully, there will be some funding head- ing our way again. An impromptu booking was made to attend a very enjoyable performance of a play entitled “The Herringbone Saga” at the KADS Theatre. It was not our usual fundraising event just a suggestion at training. Some of us met beforehand for a quick meal but made sure we were at the theatre in time for a glass of Sherry or Port. It was a great show and it was wonderful to welcome “newbies” to the theatre – Ray and Annie and Jane and Chris. Congratulations to the six swimmers who completed distance swims at the Riverton pool. Lesley, Phil, Paul, Stuart, Ian and Gwyn all enjoyed the 50mtr indoor event, whilst I had to sit and time keep – still nursing an in- jured shin. Once again, Lynne and Barbara officiated. The club will be involved in a fun event on the night before the winter solstice (which doesn’t mean we are in- dulging in weird rituals). Hervey Bay Masters – AKA The Humpbacks - in Queensland – the home pool of ex members Paula and Terry Hewitt – have challenged us to a postal swim, involving teams and all distances and strokes up to 100 mtrs. I imagine this could become and annual dual with a massive trophy involved! Kathy and Brian Brady have returned home to the cold weather after spending a fascinating holiday escorting Phil Leap and Anna Phibean around Borneo and Penang. Brian has been involved for several years with a group

The happy volunteers on Rottnest—the weather was much kinder to us all this year!! Most of us had better weather. Andrea, Lesley, Lynne and Sandra were not quite so lucky on Sunday.

It was so early it was still dark when we got to the island!

Waiting to watch the swim leg…….

Selfies at the Drink Stations and the finish line Exhausting work….

Enjoying a couple of beverages at the Quokka Arms after working hard all day

Lesley, Phil, Paul, Stuart, Ian and Gwyn all enjoyed the 50mtr indoor event, Andrea had to sit on the side and time keep as she is still nursing a sore on her leg. (hope it has gone before the Greek Island swim…) Thanks to Barbara and Lynne who both officiated at the event.

Congratulations to Ian Stewart who’s 400 metres breaststroke was swum in a state record time. Well done Ian!

That time of the year is fast approaching when those of us who grew up in the northern hemisphere think that Christmas must be just around the corner as the weather is starting to feel a lot like Christmas time. The club will be holding it’s annual ‘Christmas in July’ social event on Saturday 23rd July. Put the date in your diary and start looking out your Posh frocks and suits for the ‘Let’s Be Posh’ themed Christmas party to be held at the Hillview Golf Course.

True story! Last week I went into Sabastian's Butchers in Kalamunda and, whilst being served, a lady came in to the shop and asked the other butcher if he had any kidneys. Being a smart Alec I suggested to her that he should have at least two. (Having a little chuckle to myself. ) She turned to me and said quite seriously that she would need more than that as she was making a casserole! My little attempt at humour went straight over her head but was not lost on the butchers. I giggled all the way home! Submitted by Andrea Williams

To keep the identity of this club member a secret I shall refer to him as Sebastian. Suffice it to say, he is a tad embarrassed by this true tale but happy to share it for a good laugh.

Spurred on by “she who must be obeyed” Sebastian decided to spend a day cleaning out his wardrobe, which in-cluded an old suitcase stored away and untouched for over 10 years. Imagine his delight when he discovered his favourite leather jacket which had been his Sunday best back in his uni days. As we all know, leather has a habit of shrinking when stored for many years and the prized garment was now no longer a viable choice of garment for him. Sebastian offered his jacket to his much more svelte son-in-law to try for size. Delighted with his new retro fashion acquisition son-in-law checked himself in the mirror and noticed something in the top pocket. Sebastian quipped that it was probably a £5 note (all the money that was required for a great night out back in the day). Imagine the surprise when the “banknote” turned out to be 2 condoms – still safe in their sealed packets thankfully! So obviously a great night out was not actually achieved!

It’s what you wear in Queensland just in case there are any of those pesky Irukandji in the water. Might be useful for open water Swimming…………….
