New Bible Study in
January
The Monday morning and
Wednesday evening Bible
Study groups will resume the
week of January 8th.
The Monday group meets from 9:30-11:00 a.m. and the
Wednesday group from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Both groups feature a
meal, prayer time, and study, and they’re open to anyone who
wants to attend. Pastor Betty has selected a book by Adam
Hamilton entitled Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help
Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn't Say. Have you
ever heard a quote and wondered if it was really in the Bible?
This book looks at some of these well-used cliches and half-
truths. If you would like to order a book for the study, please let
Cherry Lane Darken know by January 1. Books will be $12.00.
This is a great time to join a group. If you have not been in-
volved yet, you are encouraged to give it a try. Are you looking for a small
group where you can get to
know your fellow HUMC
members? We offer some-
thing for everyone. Here is a

Hillsboro United Methodist Church SERVES!
Here are some more highlights of mission work done by HUMC between No-
vember 2016 and October 2017.
• HUMC bought 20 goats and several chickens as part of the
“Animals for Haiti” program as rewards for achievers in Trezo School and for senior citizens in Jacmel, Haiti.
• We collected $8111.00 to build a new school building for Tre-
zo School.
• HUMC sent two teams (6 youth and
adults) on mission trips to Trezo School to help with medical triage and building planning.
• HUMC serves a meal once a month
to the homeless at Community Care Fel-lowship, Nashville.
The HUMC Book Club will meet on January
11th and January 25th at 9:30 a.m. to discuss
THE SHACK by William Young. We’d love to
have you join this newly formed group! Shar-
ing different insights about books deepens the
reading experience and develops connection.
Here is a list of what we will be reading the
next three months:
January -The Shack by William Young
February - When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
March - I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai
For more information, contact Kristy Robinson at:
[email protected]. We’d love to have you join us!
NEW ART GROUP
Do you like to paint? Would you like to
start painting? Would you like to paint
with some of your HUMC church friends?
On Thursday, January 18th at 9:30 a.m., we will
have the first gathering of the HUMC Art group. If you enjoy painting (any
medium), or if you would like to give it a try, please join us. This group is
for all levels—no experience necessary. You can bring your own materials
and work on your own project, or if you’re just starting out and not sure
what materials you’ll need, join us and we will guide you through getting
started. We’ll have some materials available. This is not a structured art
class—just a fun group where we will each work on our own projects at
our own pace. Our goal is to encourage and help each other. If you’d like
to join us or if you have questions, please call Sheryl Waugh (615-591-
7806) or Carol Johnston (615-294-0454). Come join us and be a
“founding member” of our new art group!
Would you like to talk to Pastor Betty?
Would you like to request prayer for yourself or for
someone that you know?

HUMC Is Recipient of 900 Flower Bulbs
On a cold December 10th afternoon, 22 people took
their shovels and trowels and planted 900 narcissus
bulbs on the church property. These bulbs were a gift
from the Leiper's Fork Garden Club and were planted by
a joint group of garden club members and church mem-
bers. Curtis Stewart, Landscape Designer, provided a
plan for planting.
These bulbs are a wide variety of colors. Blooming times
will begin around the first of March. Be on the lookout
for spring color around the church yard! We appreciate
this generous gift from the garden club and hope every-
one in the community who passes by the church will en-
joy the beauty of the flowers.
Report from our Upper Room Outing! Eighteen of us from HUMC participated in a wonderful
outing of fellowship on Dec 13th to the Upper Room and
the Café at Thistle Farms. We were able to participate in the
weekly Wednesday Advent service in the Upper Room chap-
el with the awe-inspiring life-sized sculpture of The Last
Supper. We then toured the Upper Room museum which
included hundreds of nativity scenes from around the
world. We followed this with a tasty lunch together at the
newly renovated (and renamed) Café at Thistle Farms. We
plan to do more HUMC outings in 2018!
The Praying Men of Leiper’s Fork meet each Friday
morning at 6:30 a.m. for a program and breakfast.
On January 5th, we will meet at 6:30 a.m., as usual.
Then we will meet again at 10:00 a.m. to travel to
Community Care Fellowship in Nashville where we will
serve lunch. We will return to the church about 1:00
p.m. All men in the church are invited to join us.
The new HUMC PEN Club (Pray/Explore/Nourish) will
meet the second Wednesday of each month. This
month it will be on Wednesday, January 10th at 9:30
a.m. at the church. It is open to anyone who would
like to join us. Every month we will have different ac-
tivities. The activity for this month is "HUMC Rocks."
We will learn about the Kindness Rocks Project, and
we will each paint rocks with blessings to keep or to
leave for others to find. Carol Johnston will provide
supplies and instructions. You don’t have to have any
special talent to do this - it is just a way to be togeth-
er and have fun! Lots of examples and guidance will
be provided. Just bring yourself, or, if you’d like, feel
free to bring any snacks you wish to share. Come and
enjoy!
