1. Patient engagement

Dr. Eric Topol’s keynote address yesterday, which highlighted mobile technologies both available to the public and in research pipelines, underlined the theme of patient self-management.

This theme was also demonstrated and discussed in many other parts of the conference.

2. Maturation of the industry

Technologies showcased this year represent leaps in downstream development compared to previous years.

There’s a lot less of “We are working on that,” and more of “Here is what we have.” This is seen in tech ranging from IT to wearable sensors.

3. Corporate partnerships

In addition, Cerner, McKesson, Allscripts, athenahealth, Greenway Medical Technologies, and RelayHealth announced a partnership called “CommonWell Health Alliance,” which will result in seamless interoperability.

Really it’s a great move to the EHR industry.

4. Analytics

If Big Data was “The Thing” last year, analytics is it this year. Emphasis on how to make data useful to providers and hopefully therefore patients is evident everywhere.

Clinical utility of data as a focus is necessary, exciting, and evolutionary.

5. Interoperability

Past conferences focused on having technology. This year, conference emphasizes the importance of how hospitals are using their technology to work together.

I heard many questions such as, “How does it connect to EHRs?”

Visitor’s Comment on HIMSS13

Alen says “I was interacting with many booths and they displayed lots from their product menu”

Steve says “I just watched the DEMO of healthcare technologies”

Likewise we have received lots from the participants.

BillingParadise vs HIMSS13

BillingParadise has concluded many things from the conference-

“Products are many but how the exhibited is more important than just showing it”

“Knowledge could be many but how they expressed is most important”
