    history

Only reading history books or the past years oschool, I never was able to ully understand the

origins o my ancestros. I am not fuent is spanish anddidnt have a quincerna. I know my dads side o myamily is very traditional hispanic and they all speakspanish. Teir kids and the younger generations aremore americanized like me.

But when I visit my amily I still eel like one othem. Both my parents are rom big amilies. My

dads one o 9 children. And my grandma on mymoms side is one o 12 children. Needless to say, Ihave tons o relatives. Families are so important inhispanic homes. Ive heard many stories and seenpictures that realate to my culture. My entire amilyis essentially my personal histroy to hispanic culture.

    religion

In Mexico, the main religion is Catholic. I wasbaptized a Catholic as a baby and always believed

in my religion. Sometimes, I do not agree witheverything the Church preaches about, especially thepolitical aspects. But the essential core values I dobelieve in.

    A

s I grew up I attended church on Sundays with

my amily and we would eat brunch right ater.It was bascially a weekly ritual. I attended a Catholicmiddle school and every Friday morning all the classes

would attend mass at the school. I also atteneded aCatoloc High School and am enrolled in a CatholcCollege. I didnt quite do this intentionally but Imglad it happened this way. So growing up, I becameaccustomed to go to mass and learn about Catholicismits customs.

The wall art on the buildings was my avorite parto making this book. As you can see, I used a

lot o wall art in this book. Ive always known thatHispanic culture involved such intense vibrant colors.Ten I began to think about my home in Dallas.

We lived in a red -bricked house. My living room is

colored pink. My kitchen is red and a lot o bedroomsare blue. Te connection clicked and I relaized myhouse is so similar to these in East Side.

Also, on a particual building, I saw a painting oa woman with a uni-brow and a monkey on her

shoulder. I knew instantly that it was Frida Kahol.I love her earless work. She is a true inspirationespecially to Mexican artists and is one o my idols.

In my middle school, I recall many cultural activites.

We would play loteria in spanish class. I rememberduring Multicultural Week, there would be only aew other tables o other cultures and a huge longtable that spread through the whole school gym omexican ood. I remmeber dancing olklorico duringthat week. Te dresses are really heavy but they are so

    gorgeous and colorul.

Piatas are a big thing in East Austin just like mychildhood. I remember when I was really young,

I would always have a piata at my birthday parties. And once that piata broke, it was complete chaoso children and candy. It was almost a ght to thedeath. But o course, all in good un. I always lookedorward to piatas at my birthdays when I was a kid.

    food

Iabsoultey love mexican ood. Ive been to Juan in a

mIllion in East Side and it is delicious and actuallyreally cheap. I love homeade mexican ood rom mymom. She makes great tacos and enchiladas. Andshe is amous or her tortilla soup. It is absolutelyamazing. When I go home to visit, she always makesit or me. She also cooks yummy rice which Ive triedto replicate in college but was a total ailure. Te only

thing I can really cook well is enchiladas. And I makethem almost weekly.

Tamales are a must during Christmas Eve. Lastyear, my amily and cousins made our own

tamales and they turned out pretty good. And alsowe make bunuelos around the holidays. Cooking

mexican ood is one o my avorite cultural customsthat I hope to carry strongly onto the next generation.
