The Diary of Charles A. Baer

Norristown

1862-1863By Kirke Bryan, Esq.

(Continued from page 126)

Thursday, January 1, 1863: This was a beautiful day. Itwas my intention to spend today in the city, going to churchin the morning, and in the afternoon attending the Sundayschool festival in the Neck, but an engagement to perform amarriage ceremony in the evening prevented the latter, and Iwas othervdse prevented from the former. Attended the German Reformed in the morning. In the afternoon made severalvisits.

At six o'clock Mr. Andrew Baker came for me and took mein his carriage to his father's house, where I performed themarriage ceremony between his sister, Martha Baker, andWilliam Finnay. After the ceremony the company sat downto a sumptuous feast.

Saturday, January 10: Spent the morning in my room. Inafternoon went out to Oakland. Spent a short time with ClaraMyers.

Wednesday, January 21: A very stormy, rainy day. Wentto the city and returned at noon. At evening service only thesexton and Mr. Lehman were present. Had no service. Spentremainder of the evening at Longakers'.

Saturday, January 24: Have spent this afternoon and preceding ones in visiting my people.

Saturday, January 31: Yesterday morning was in the city.Looked after getting a chapel tent for the 51st Regiment.Singing school in the evening. I spent the evening at Shoffners',

where they had some company complimentary to Daniel Yost, who is lieutenant-colonel of the 179th Regiment, drafted men,and who is here on a visit. Company did not break up untillate. It was after twelve when I got to my room.

Sunday, February 1, 1863: This was a cloudy day. In theevening it commenced to rain. At 10 o'clock I attended thefuneral of Abrm. Ouster, son-in-law of John Lare. He joinedthe 51st Regiment just before the battle of Antietam, and inthe battle of Fredricksburg he was struck by a shell and diedsoon after. He was buried there, but his body was broughthome and buried today. The time being so near to church timewe had no time for much speaking. Rev. Price conducted theservices. I offered the prayer.

' Church was well attended, considering the weather and thefuneral, I preached from Heb. 4:15, on Christ's being tempted. When i came home to dinner I found Cornelia Jacoby at thehouse with her husband. They have been recently married. Two hundred twenty-five scholars at Sunday school. The rainin the evening made the church attendance small.

Monday, February 2: Met my class this evening. I fearthere is not sufficient seriousness on the part of many whoattend, and that there are some older persons who would attend, but are prevented by there being so many young personsthere who are not properly impressed with the solemnity ofthe matter.

Tuesday, February 3: This evening I was present at anevening company given by Miss Dewey at the Episcopal rectory. The weather became very cold this evening.

Monday, February 9; Went to the city. Had the chapeltent shipped off. Returned at 4 o'clock. Met my class in theevening. Attendance not so good, but more serious.

Thursday, February 19: This evening married George Hay-worth and Martha B. Ramsey at the house of the Misses Barton. Was invited to attend a party at Schalls' but not wishingto give my countenance to a dancing party, I did not go.

THE DIARY OF CHARLES A. BAER

Friday, February 20: This evening was the last eveningof the first quarter of our singing class. The interest has beenwell kept up. The attendance of visitors was pretty large. Itis proposed by the leader, Mr. Day, to have a series of tenmore lessons.

Thursday, March 5, 1863: This evening married LewisDavis. The matter was kept quiet. Company was invited tothe house, but no intimation was given in regard to the ceremony to take place. Whilst they were seated in the parlor, thebridal party, followed by myself, entered the room, and theceremony was performed to the great surprise of the company. The evening was spent very pleasantly.

Friday, March 13: This morning I sat to have my photograph taken by Lenzi.

Monday, March 30: This afternoon, the weather beingvery Springlike, I moved my library, &c, to the house intowhich Judge Jacoby moves. I employed a colored man witha furniture wagon, and in two loads had all removed.

Saturday, April 4: Last Tuesday the family with whomI board moved into a house on DeKalb Street. The weatherwas very unpleasant. It rained and snowed nearly the wholeday. Fortunately I moved on Monday.

Yesterday being Good Friday, we had services in thechurch in the afternoon. The attendance was the smallest Ihave ever had on such an occasion in Norristown. I preachedfrom the words, 'And sitting down they watched him there.'The singing class met in the evening.

Sunday, April 5, Easter: Last night it commenced to snow. This morning it continued to rain, making it very unpleasant.Preparatory service was held last evening, but the attendancewas small. Considering the very bad weather, the attendancethis morning was very good. I spoke on the words of Paul,That I may know the power of His resurrection.' Over 140persons were present at the communion. Sunday school wasslimly attended in the afternoon. In the evening I preached

on the resurrection of the body. In the afternoon I administered communion to Mrs. Schoch, and baptized several Children at Lares'.

Tuesday, April 7: In the evening I attended an entertainment given for the benefit of the Ladies' Army Aid Society.

Wednesday, April 15: Lectured this evening. Raining. After lecture the vestry held a meeting and decided to call ameeting of the congregation on Tuesday evening, to take stepsin "regard to erection of a'new church.

Tuesday, April 21: This evening a meeting of the congregation was held, to consult in regard to building a new church. The attendance was pretty good. There seemed to be a unanimous and determined spirit to go forward and-accomplish thework. The meeting agreed that an adjoining piece of groundshould be, purchased, from Dr. Matthews, on the best termsthat could be obtained. The question of changing the locationwas also considered, but after discussion it was thought bestnot to change. When it came to the matter of subscription,Mr. Lehman offered to subscribe $1000, if one or two otherscould be found to do the same. Here there was a halt, and themeeting adjourned without making any further progress. Ireturned to my room very much disheartened. I thought thatthe project was entirely frustrated.

Thursday, April 23: My feelings in regard to the buildingof the church have been somewhat altered, "yesterday morning I called on Mr. William Stabler and endeavored to gethim to give $1000, but did not succeed. Mr. Stabler was takenvery sick yesterday and was obliged to take to his'bed. Thism.orning he was better, and on visiting him I succeeded atlast in getting his subscription for $1000. Thus the subscription has commenced with two of $1000 each.

In the afternoonT called on Francis Nace, who is wealthy, but did not succeed in getting from him what I thought heought to give. He will have to be waited on again. In theevening I waited on Daniel Longaker, but did not succeed ingetting his name down. Getting subscriptions is a difficult

work. How little do men realize their duty, how unwilling* arethey to make sacrifices for the church.

Tuesday, April 28: This evening William Stabler and myself called on Daniel Longaker and got from him the promiseof $250 to be paid when the new church is under roof and$250 when sufficient has been subscribed to pay off the wholeof the debt.

Thursday, April 30: This was the day appointed by thePresident as a national fast day. We had service in the morning. The attendance was pretty good. I preached from 1 Kings8 :44-45. In the afternoon I visited. In the evening called atJohnsons' and Hoovens'. Wrote letters this week to D. M. Yost,A. J. Strach, Charles Wieland, Jacob Sanders, D. Bane, F. D.James,'Dr. Mathews, G. F. Miller, Milton Feather. •

Sunday, May 10, 1863: This was a beautiful,, warm day.Last night a report was brought to town that Richmond hadbeen occupied by our forces, from Yorktown, and that Hookerhad crossed the Rappahannock again. By evehinig the.' goodhews had dwindled down to the report that Hooker had onilycrossed, and Richmond not taken, and later still it was thatall was a hoax. There was much excitement over the first

report.

Morning services were not so very well attended. Therewas a lacking in the attendance of men. C. W. Knauf preachedon words, 'Thou shalt call his name Jesus.' Mr. Knauf is acandidate for the ministry, and will no doubt be ordained atthe approaching meeting of Synod. Sunday .school was onlytolerably well attended.

Thursday, May 18: The weather today was chilly anddamp. Succeeded this morning in getting a subscription forthe new church from Judge Jacoby for $200. Went to the cityat 9 o'clock-and attended divine service at St. Mark's Church.

Went with Knauffs to dinner. Returned in afternoon. Calledon Mr. Willoughby Boyer, and succeeded in getting him tosubscribe $200 to the new church. In the evening Mr. Lehmanand I .tried several others, but could not get them to'go that

amount, and therefore did not take their names for thepresent.

Friday, May 14: A beautiful day, but very cool. Spentmorning mostly in my room. Visited a number of families inthe afternoon. In the evening Mr. Lehman and I called uponMr. J. Poley, and succeeded in getting him to subscribe $200,whereat we were glad, and went home with much more pleasant feelings than we did last night.

Monday, May 24: This evening our annual congregationalmeeting was held. Elders and deacons were elected. Afterwards the new church business came up. The plan proposedwas adopted. H. Lehman, Dr. Poley, Wm. Kerper, W. Stabler, D. Longaker, Francis Nace, and myself were elected asbuilding committee. After this business I read the new charter which I had prepared. The hour was too late to take actionupon it, and it was referred to a committee, to report on it ata future meeting.

Saturday, June 6, 1863: Meeting of Synod. On last Saturday afternoon I went to Reading to attend the meeting ofSjTiod to be held in that city. Mr. Lehman being my delegate,Mrs. Lehman went, Mr. Lehman remaining at home untilSunday evening. A number of other ministers were in thecars. Whilst at Reading I staid with Feathers, who keep theKeystone House, I found it a pleasant place. The family allseemed pleased with the visitors. A number of other ministersand delegates staid there also.

The exercises of Synod commenced on Saturday eveningwith the preparatory services. Rev. Welden preaching. OnSunday morning I preached in Rev. Valentine's church. Inthe German Church the synodical sermon was preached byDr. Mann, and Communion held. In the afternoon MissFeather and myself visited several of the Sunday schools. Iwas asked to address the Sunday school of St. James' Church, which I did. In the evening I attended Mr. Valentine's church, where Rev. Sadler preached.

• On Monday morning the business session was commenced.Dr. C. M. Schaeffer was elected president. On Monday evening

the Education Anniversary was hel.d. The German servicestook place in St. John's. The English took place in Trinity, where I preached. On Wednesday evening fifteen young menwere ordained, among them C. W. Knauff.

The subject that caused the most interest at Synod thisyear was the union of the two synods. After a very earnestdebate and various maneuvers of those opposed to the movement, a series of resolutions were passed declaring such aunion eminently desirable, and setting forth certain conditions. These will be laid before the Synod of East Pennsylvania for their action.

This year I was placed on the Committee on the Reportof the German Professor, and wrote the report of that committee. I was also elected a director of the Theological Seminary for five years. Mr. Lehman was also elected a directorfor the same period. He was also elected an alternate delegateto the General Synod. I returned to Norristown on Friday atnoon.

Last night we had a meeting of the building committee,to receive estimates. The principal one was not arranged aswe desired, and the awarding of the contract was deferreduntil next Monday evening.

Monday, June 8,1863: Went to city this morning. In afternoon attended meeting of the Publication Board. Returnedon 4:30 train. In the evening the building committee met toreceive and open the estimates for the new church building.Messrs. Huston presented the following estimates. For brickwork, $2075.00; marble work, $600.00; for other work exclusive of painting, frescoing and gas fitting, $6625.00;total, $9900.00 [$9300.00?].

Mr. Stokes presented an estimate for brick work for$2060, which is $15 below Messrs. Huston, and therefore hedoes the work. Mr. Jos. Moyer also presented an estimate forthe marble work at $750, which was higher than that ofMessrs. Huston.

Wednesday, June 10: Instead of lecture this evening weheld a congregational meeting to consider and adopt the new

church constitution. It was read by sections and adopted, andI was appointed to attend to bringing it before the court.Several of the building committee having declined serving;the number was reduced to five, and Mr. High was electedto complete that number. Today I got subscriptions to theamount of $200. This morning I got Lenzi to take a photograph of the church.

Saturday, June 13: This afternoon I had the interior ofour old church photographed.

Sunday June 14: Day opened cloudy, but soon clearedaway, and the weather was pleasant. This was the last Sunday in our old church. Attendance morning and evening good.

' Monday, June 15: This afternoon reports reached us thatthe. rebels had invaded Pennsylvania, and were advancingUpon Harrisburg. A meeting was held in the court house, an^speeches mades urging men to go to Harrisburg. The President has called out 100,000 men for six^ months. Of these,50,000 are to come from Pennsylvania.

Today I rewrote the charter of our church. Mr. Garberpresented it to the court, and the application was ordered tobe published.

Tuesday, June 16: This afternoon a telegram from theGoyernor was posted up, stating that the rebels were aprpreaching Harrisburg, and calling upon the people to cometo the defence of the state. There seems 4:o be great apathyon this subject. But few have gone. This afternoon WalterCooke went off with about 12 men.

I had made an engagement in connection with Rev. Woartto hold a meeting in behalf of the Bible Society this eveningin Pottstown, but-thinking that in consequence of the excitement we would- not succeed, I telegraphed to Rey, GeorgeMiller to postpone the meeting. , •

Yesterday the furniture" of the church was removed, andtoday the carpenters tore up the floors. It is well that a commencement has thus been actually made. If it had not-beenclone, probably-the excitement on account of the threatened

rebel invasion would have caused the work again to be deferred. This evening I met the young folks of the church, atKerper's.

Thursday, June 18: The excitement today calmed downconsiderably. It seems now that the rebels probably did notget- any farther than Chambersburg.

Sunday, June 21: Cloudy and misty, with occasional rain.Today for the first time we worshipped in the Odd FellowsHall. Considering the weather the attendance was better thanI expected. Sunday school met in the same place in the afternoon. The weather was not very favorable to a large attendance, yet there were 196 present. A number of new scholarsmade their appearance. At six o'clock I attended the OakStreet M.E. Church, and afterward the First Presbyterian.

Saturday, June 27: This has been a week of reports ofrebel invasions. The rebels in considerable force have invadedour State and successfully occupied Chambersburg, Gettysburg, Carlisle, and are approaching Harrisburg., But out ofall this there seems to be no stir. Very few have offered to goto repel them.

Sunday, June 28: After a cloudy morning it cleared awayand became very pleasant. Just before service I received anotice of a public meeting to be held this afternoon, at halfpast one o'clock. Morning services were very well attended. The hall was almost filled. I preached from I Peter 2:13-16,and at the close of my sermon urged the duty of the Christiancitizen to come forward at the call of his country to defendher. In the afternoon Sunday school was well attended, therebeing 243 scholars present.. The exercises were somewhatshorter on account of the German service that followed. The

attendance at this was tolerable.

A very large town meeting was held in the court house.Speeches were made to encourage men to enroll in the militiaservice for three months, and a subscription was started toprovide for the families of those who needed aid. Telegramswere posted up towards evening that the rebels were ap-

preaching Harrisbxirg, and a later one announced that theyhad appeared opposite Columbia. It is designed to raise threecompanies in Norristown, and considerable progress has beenmade towards this. In the evening I attended Central Presbyterian Church, where I saw a number of my congregation.

Monday, June 29: Today business was generally suspendedin town, and attention given to raising companies for the defence of the state. This afternoon a company under the captaincy of Edward Schall left for Reading and Harrisburg. The excitement in town was increased by telegrams postedup telling of the approach of the rebels, that they were opposite to Columbia, evidently designing to cross, and thatsome skirmishes took place not far from Harrisburg.

This afternoon the workmen at the church commencedto push down the walls. They pushed down the two side wallsbefore they stopped work this evening.

This evening just before supper I was surprised by avisit from mother. The people of Lancaster have become apprehensive of a visit from the rebels, and my brothers at homethought it would be better for mother to be away from Lancaster. As our house is pretty much taken up with visitorsof Jacobys', I accepted Mrs. Lehman's invitation and motherwent to Lehmans'.

Tuesday, June 30: This morning a company under thecommand of Captain Taylor left Norristown. They were metat Bridgeport by Captain Harry Lutz's company, who wentAVith them. A large crowd was present at the station.

This morning the workmen pushed over the front wall ofthe' church. The cornerstone thus came out, but the contentswere so poorly preserved as scarcely to be recognized. Theywere a Bible, a hymnbook, a catechism, and several newspapers. The case in which they were was of wood, the dampnesspenetrated it, and the contents were so mouldy and pressedtogether that the papers and the catechism could scarcely bediscerned. About half past one o'clock the back wall camedown in one piece, and so the old church is now entirely torndown, the last day of June, 1863.

Wednesday, July 1, 1863: This morning another companygotten up by the Union League left town for the defence of thestate. In the afternoon another one under the captaincy of B.Markley Boyer left town. The main street was kept in a stateof excitement by the maneuvering of a cavalry company. Thisevening we received intelligence that our forces had driventhe rebel cavalry back. Favorable news has also been receivedof Rosecrans' operations.

The workmen at the church today were clearing away oldlumber, &c, preparatory to digging the excavations for thefoundation walls.

Thursday, July 2: This morning a company of cavalrycommanded by Captain Haas left for Reading. They made avery fine appearance.

Friday, July 3: This morning MrSi Lehman and Clara andniother and myself rode up to the Trappe, where we staid withMr. Sills until evening, and then rode home we heard reportsof Vicksburg having surrendered, and which proved unfounded.

Saturday, July 4: Spent the day principally in my room. Our anxiety in regard to the position of our army and that ofthe rebels has been considerably relieved by hearing this morning that our army had defeated the rebels near Gettysburg.Late in the evening reports arrived that after a most bloodybattle the rebels were repulsed. There was no particularobservance of the day.

Sunday, July 5: This morning set in cloudy, and by thetime of morning service it was raining pretty fast. Morningservices were tolerably attended. The news this morning wasvery exciting. General Meade in a terrible battle yesterdaydefeated the rebels, who were flying in retreat. The news wasconfirmed by despatches received in the evening.

Tuesday, July 7: Workmen commenced the excavationsfor the foundation of the new church. At noon a telegraphicdespatch was received announcing the surrender of Vicksburgto the U. S. forces.

•Thursday, July 9: Yesterday morning went to Reading, tovisit our men who are camped there. It rained nearly thewhole day. Rev. Valentine went with me out to camp. Lectured for him in the evening. This morning called on theMisses Trexler, and the Miihlenbergs. Mrs. Prof. Muhlenberggave me a full account of the treatment she received at thehands of the rebels at Gettysburg.

Saturday, July 11: This morning the masons commencedthe stone foundations •of the new church.

Wednesday, July 15: This morning we received the newsthat Port Hudson had surrendered, that our forces weremaking progress in the siege of Charleston, and that Lee hadescaped over the Potomac. A great mob commenced, in thecity of New York, where the draft was being made.

Sunday, July 19: Morning service well attended. T noticequite a number of strangers attended the services in the hall.Preached on the Savior's agony in the garden. Attendance atat Sunday school, 198. A number of the teachers have goneinto the volunteer service: Captain H. Lutz, Josiah Christman,William Wright, Frank Kerper, Val. Strach, Irvin Poley havegone. We feel their absence. At the request of Dr. Halsey Ipreached for him this evening. I repeated my sermon onScriptural views of civil government, and our duty toward it.

Friday, July 24: This morning mother and I went to thecity. She had her picture taken at Gutekinst's. After attending to a few other matters, she left for Lancaster on the 4o'clock train. Having left her in the cars, I went out to thecamp in Richmond where our Norristown men are camped.Took tea with Captain Lutz in his tent. Remained in campuntil near 8 o'clock and returned, home on the midnight train.

Saturday, August 15: On last Monday morning I intendedto go to Gettysburg to attend the meeting of the seminarydirectors to be held on Tuesday last. I was prevented fromstarting in the morning by the funeral of Henry McCoy. Hewas one of our Sunday school scholars; went out to thecountry to spend his vacation. While there he went into the

creek, and was taken sick and died on Friday last. The funeraltook place on Monday at 2 o'clock.

At 6:30 I went to the city, spent part of the evening atKnauffs' and at 10:30 took the cars for Harrisburg, where Iarrived at about 3 o'clock. At 6:30 I took the cars of theNorthern Central R. R. Met Rev. C. W. Shaeffer, L, H. Houptand a number of other friends, all on their way to Gettysburg. At the Hanover junction we had to wait more than two hours. We got to Gettysburg at about one o'clock.

I took quarters at McClennan's Hotel. I had never stoppedat a hotel in Gettysburg before. On being shown to a .room tochange my clothes I was struck with the unclean appearanceof everything about it. I remarked it to one of my companions, and thought that it was owing to the disturbed condition ofthings incident upon the battle; but one who had been wellacquainted with Gettysburg for many years remarked thatthat has been the general condition of the hotels of Gettysburg.I have generally expressed myself against the removal of ourinstitutions from Gettysburg, but at this visit I was very muchimpressed with the necessity of removing them to some otherplace.

The Board of Directors of the Seminary met in the afternoon and evening in St. James' Lutheran Church. Not muchbusiness was transacted beyond making provision for repairing the seminary.

On Wednesday morning a party was made up to go overthe battleground. Professor Jacobs had been in town duringthe battle and was well acquainted with the movements of bothsides. He has prepared a diagram of the battle and written put anarrative of incidents of the great struggle. We fortunatelyhad him for our guide, and thus our exploration of the groundwas made very interesting by his explanation.

We commenced at the gate of the Cemetery and went overthe right wing of our lines. The well constructed breastworkswere still there. The trees all scarred with balls gave evidenceof the severity of the fire. Having gone over this part we came

back to the Cemetery. The party became straggling, and wegot separated from Professor Jacobs. With Rev. Sadler, whohad been over the ground a few days.after the battle, we wentover the left wing, as far as Round Top. Among the rocks atthis place we saw several bodies of dead rebels, and a numberburied whose limbs were still protruding from the earth.

After dinner alone, I went out to the general hospital onthe York Road. There I met Rev. Mr. Yocum of the SwedesChurch at Bridgeport. He is acting as one of the missionariesof the Christian Commission. Also met Mrs. Holstein ofBridgeport, who has offered her services for the hospital. ARev. Mr. Willing took me around to the tents. The first wevisited were those of the rebel officers. They seemed cheerful, and from the little that passed between us in regard to therebellion they expressed themselves confident that it wouldsucceed.

From this hospital I went over to the seminary. In goingto this place I passed over the battleground of the first day'sfight, when the 1st and 11th corps engaged the enemy andwere driven- back. I went up into the woods"where the rebsliad erected breastworks, and over into "the field behind theseminary, where the gallant and daring Reynolds fell.

• I then went into the seminary. In the room which I firstoccupied a huge hole was knocked into the wall by a shell.Opposite in the other •rooms were several rebel generals,Trumble and Kemper and Major Douglass. I also visited thetents outside, and then returned to town.• • The conflict must have been a terrific one, and one cannot

fail-to feel that Providence directed affairs on the first day, tosecure for our arms a position against which the enemy hurledhis forces only to be shattered and destroyed.

' On Thursday morning at 8 o'clock I left Gettysburg andarrived at Lancaster in the afternoon. Overexerting myselfon Wednesday and the water of Gettysburg had made me quitesick, and I hastened to Lancaster. On Friday I took medicine, and on Saturday. This morning I started for Norristcwn, where I arrived at half past two.

THE DIARY OF CHARLES A. BAER 211

Sunday, August 16: The weather, today was again yerywarm, but a breeze made it more pleasant than precedingSundays. At eight o'clock this morning I performed themarriage ceremony between Joseph Huber and CatharineStprck, originally from Lancaster. In the morning I preachedfrom 2 Samuel 24:24, David's reply to Araunah.

During my absence last week the militia have returned, andour Sunday school is again supplied with young men.. Thedraft which took place last week was also sparing of us, so thatour operations will go on much better, seeing that we have agood force of young men.

After Sunday school, I visited Eeneville Shade who issinking very rapidly into consumption and also Mrs. Schoch, who is nearly 91 years old. A shower about 6 o'clock cooledthe air. This evening I preached/for Dr. Halsey, from Ephe-sians 4:12, the Body of Christ.

Cornerstone Laying: Having forgotten to make an entryof this in its proper place I make it here. Thursday, the 6th ofthis month having been appointed by the President to beobserved as a day of thanksgiving', for the recent victories, wethought it would be an appropriate day for the ceremonies oflaying the cornerstone of our new church. I secured the services of Rev. Dr. Krauth to preach the sermon, and of Dr.Schaeffer, of Germantown, to lay the cornerstone. The daywas pleasant. We had no services in the morning. The peopleof the First Presbyterian Church gave us the use of theirchurch. A full account of the exercises I prepared for theLutheran and Missionary, and is to be found in the number ofthat paper of August .13.

Tuesday, August 18: Today we commenced again gettingsubscriptions. Got four subscriptions amounting to $145.

Wednesday, August 19: This afternoon and evening gotfonr subscriptions amounting to $70. At two places we didnot succeed in getting anything more than promises to dosomething.

Sunday, August 23: Another very warm day. Morningservices very slimly attended. Preached part of a sermon Ipreached years ago. An improvement in Sunday school attendance : 177 present. Attended ^Dr. Halsey's church in theevening.

Wednesday, August 26, 1863: Yesterday got a horse and.carriage and rode to the Tfappe. Went by way of Sh'annon-ville and called at Jacob Ouster's, where I took dinner, andspoke to him about a subscription to the church. After dinnerwent on to the Trappe. .Got there in time to attend a funeral, where Rev. Weaver pr^ched in the church. Spent the afternoon with Sills. In the evening it rained very hard. Spent theevening at Royers'. . ,

Returned this morning and stopped at Jeffersonville atBeans' and Richards'.

Yesterday at noon the bricklayers commenced their workon the church by commencing the.front wall. The box forthe conerstone was put into its place and the wall built over it.

This afternoon and evening called on several persons forsubscriptions. For the first time since we have been gettingsubscriptions we met two who declined at present on thegroiund of political preaching as .they style it.

Detective Work Among the Bennersor

An Analytical Study

of

Two Pioneer Montgomery County Families

By Hannah Benner Roach

1949

(Continued from page 156)

S-34 John Benner

Information relating to Isaac's second son is only circumstantial, no evidence having been found which definitely tieshim in with other members of the family.'

It is known he was born between. 1785 and 1790, for the1800 Census places Isaac's second son in the 10 to 15 agebracket. On the other hand, his name never appears on theextant Germantown tax returns.

On March 21, 1821, a John Benner and Maria Miley (orMeley) were married in the First Reformed Dutch Church ofPhiladelphia. This record, though far from conclusive, is significant because Mary Bowman, daughter of N-6 BarbaraUnruh Bowman^®®, and therefore a^niece of George F. Unruhand his wife Ann Benner, married a George Meley.

Prior to 1850 John Benner cannot be identified in the

Philadelphia Directories, but from 1850. to 1853- one of thatname is listed as a, clerk living at 426 N. Front Street. From1853 on a John Benner lived at 249 N. 5th Street,.and, styledhimself a commission merchant, maintaining an office, at :31S. Delaware Avenue from 1853 to the year of his death.

In the Saturday, February 14, 1857 Philadelphia PublicLedger, the notice of his death appears:"Benner—On Friday morning, the 13th inst., John Benner, sr. in the 71st

year of his age. Funeral will take place from his late residence 249 N.5th Street, above Callowhill, on Monday morning. His friends andrelatives are pai'ticularly invited to attend. To proceed to Germantown."

His tombstone in the Germantown Mennonite Cemeteryreads: "John Benners, d Feb. 13, 1857; aged 71 years." Thissets a birth-date of 1786, and seems to allow the assumptionhere lies Isaac's second son.

Probable Children of S-34 John Benner

Data regarding these children is meagre, and to someextent circumstantial, being based chiefly on the PhiladelphiaDirectories. From these it is learned that one son, S-341 Johnp. Benners, as he styled himself, was in business with hisfather at 31 S. Delaware from 1853 to i858, at which time hewas living at home with the senior Benner. In the followingyears he was listed at various addresses, all in the same general neighborhood. He died in 1863 and is buried beside hisfather, his gravestone in the Germantown Mennonite Cemetery reading: "John D. Benners, d March 25, 1863, aged 40years."

A second son, S-342 Isaac B. Benner, about whom less isknown, also lived with the elder John Benner at the N. 5thStreet address from 1853 to 1856. After his father's death he

was in business with his brother as a commission merchant

for a time, then in 1861 was with Warner Draper, doing business under the firm name of Benners and Draper, Importersand Commission Merchants. Still later he was.a dealer inwholesale fruits. The date of his death has not been ascer

tained, but further research may reveal additional data onhis life and family.

S-35 Catherine Benner

Of all Bastian Benner's known grandchildren, this daughter of S-3 Isaac seems to have strayed farthest from the fold.Scarcely two years after her father's death she married on

DETSCTIVE WORK AMONG THE BENNERS 215

January 2, 1825 Patrick Kane, a native of Ireland, in old St.Joseph's Catholic Church. He was a shoemaker by trade, some seventeen years older than she, whose name first appeared in the Philadelphia Directories in 1823 as a cord-wainer located back of No. 16 Shippen (now Bainbrid^re)Street, where he lived until his marriage.

Like others of the third generation Benners, he apparently never owned any property, for he continued to live atdifferent addresses through the years: in 1833 he and hisfamily were at 303 Shippen; in 1842 they had moved toGriswold Alley, located in the Directories between Fitzwaterand South Streets, and between 6th and 7th. In 1851 theywere located at No. 1 Griswold Alley, and from 1854 untilPatrick's death at No. 4 Griswold Alley.

Four years after Patrick's death in 1864, his widowCatherine's name appeared in the Directories, living at 1543N. 11th Street where she was probably making her homewith a son of the same name as her husband—Patrick—whofollowed the same trade. In 1875 and '76 she and the son wereonce more back on Griswold Alley, the address being No. 716.From 1880 until her death in '88 she made her home, however, at 909 S. 4th Street, in the Second Ward.

Death certificates are on file in the Philadelphia Bureauof yital Statistics, City Hall Annex, for both Patrick andCatherine Kane. On hers, her parents are listed as Isaac andBarbara Benner, an understandable error since her ownmother had died when she was only about two.

Undoubtedly there were other children, but their names havenot been ascertained to date.

S-36 Elizabeth Benner

According to the Census Records, Betty, as she was calledby her family, according" to Mrs. Toner, was under nine in1800, and between 10 and 15 in 1810, which places her birth-date between 1795 and 1800. It is probable, therefore,'thather birth was the cause of her mother's death^®®.

Her husband Jacob Rittenhouse is not covered in Mr.

Cassel's "History of the Rittenhouse Family" and unfortunately efforts to trace his lineage or his life have been inconclusive. When he died intestate letters of administration

were granted on May 26, 1849^®^ to his widow Elizabeth andto S-361 Mary Spencer of Roxborough, undoubtedly his eldest daughter. Sureties for the bond of $200 were a seconddaughter S-362 Margaret Rittenhouse, of Roxborough, andElizabeth Rittenhouse of the same place, either the widow ora .third daughter. As no sons are named co-administrators,he probably had hone.

S-37 Elizabeth Benner

This daughter of S-3 Isaac was a half-sister to the foregoing children, as her mother was Barbara, Isaac's secondwife.

Isaac Rittenhouse whom Elizabeth married, was the sonof Peter and Susanna (Lippen) Rittenhouse and a farmerand blacksmith of considerable ingenuity. According to "TheHistory of the Rittenhouse Family" by Daniel K. Cassel, PartII, Isaac invented the swelled ax for forcing out chips whenfelling trees.

Isaac's name appeared for the first time in the MorelandTownship tax returns in 1821, the year after his marriage.Therein his trade's annual income, of $200 was taxed at 38c.His only other taxable property was a dog, but the following

year he had bought a cow which raised his tax to $1.40. By1825 he owned a dwelling and 10 acres of land and two cows,on which he paid a total tax of $2.44, his real estate beingassessed at $1000.

In 1830 the assessment was reduced to $750, though hehad acquired a horse, and paid a tax of $2.80. Two yearslater the real estate was again reduced in value, this time to$576, the tax however increasing to $3.56. In 1842, the yearof his wife's death, the valuation jumped to $3000 and thetax to $5.83.

Some years later he removed to Germantown, havingmarried in 1844 a second wife. Patience Morris. By his firstVFife. Sarah Benner, he had seven children^®^, only four of;w'hom lived to maturity. , «

S-38 Jacob Benner

Efforts to distinguish the youngest son of Isaac Bennerfrom the other Jacob Benners in Philadelphia and German-town have been unavailing so far. Of the three Jacobs listedin Germantown at various times up to 1835, one might possibly be he, perhaps the carpenter whose name appeared onthe Enumeration list of 1828.

Beginning in 1855 the Philadelphia Directories list a cabinet maker in Kensington and neighboring districts whomight possibly be Isaac's son—perhaps even the carpenter ofthe Enumeration List of 1828, but not enough informationhas been found to establish his identity.

S-4 Catherine Benner

Of all Sebastian's children, Catherine remains the leastknown. The only definite information about her is found inthe recorded releases of her rights in her father's estate. OnSeptember 30,1774, she received her share of £104,12,6 fromS-2 Abraham, and of £67,2,6 from S-1 Christian^®®.

This event occurred three days after letters of administration were granted to Jacob Funk (her step-father?) on theestate of Samuel Funk^'S whose untimely death quite probably was at least one of the contributing reasons for the initial partition of Sebastian's property.

Nothing is known of Samuel Funk's family; he may havebeen a son of Bishop Henry Funk, the first minister of theFranconia Mennonite church, whose second son, the Rev.Henry Funk, removed with his family to Virginia in 1786.If this supposition is correct, and as no mention has beenfound of Catherine after 1774, she must have made her homewith her late husband's kin, moving with her brother-in-lawand his family to Virginia. Whether she had any childrenby Samuel Funk, or remarried, is unknown.

S-5 Jacob Benner

First recorded notice of Jacob Benner comes from the

Militia rolls of 1777. His place was in the second class of theFranconia Company where, being younger and unmarried,he was in a somewhat better position to go out on duty with

less inconvenience than the others. However he appears tohave been no more anxious to serve than the older brothers, for he too was liable for fines amounting to £3 for absenteeismon muster days, and for £22,10 for non-performance of militia duty in that year.^®' The next year the assessed fineagainst his name was £3, 5, and in 1779 £9, 15.^®®

In both this last year and in 1780 his taxable estate on theFranconia Tax returns was listed at £20. Probably the nextyear, 1781, he had married, for the returns list 55 acresagainst his name, as well as a horse, for a total estate of £162.The acreage included that portion of his brother Abraham's150 acres on which was no dwelling.

The next year he took over more land from Abraham, andwas assessed for 90 acres and dwelling rated at £218. Then onDecember 9th he formally released his rights to Abraham forthe sum of £104, 12,6 in the 150-acre Hunsberger tract.^®'^This transaction was a legal technicality, necessitated by thefact Abraham was about to sell the northeast 64 acres—alongIsaac's farm—to S-6 Sebastian before moving down to Springfield, as well as the southwest 90 acres to Jacob. After havingsecured title to the entire tract, the following spring Abrahamexecuted an indenture on March 27 (1783), whereby he soldto Jacob for £492 the land .on which Jacob had been living fortwo years,^®® A fortnight earlier on March 10th Jacob hadreleased his rights in the property of his eldest brother Christian for the sum of £268,11.^®®

All this conveying, however, did not mean Jacob intendedto remain in Franconia; he too, had determined to remove toGermantown, and after making arrangements to sell his fahnjoined the brothers who had already gone down there. He

apparently moved in the early spring since he was included in-the Germantown Tax Return for 1783, thereon being listed ashaving a horse and cow, the taxable estate amounting to £29.

For some reason or other the arrangements Jacob hadmade with the buyer of the 90 acres—Jacob Hagey, who alsoowned land adjoining the farm on the northwest—were nottoo happily made. In the Pennsyvania Gazette for June 11,1783, appeared the following notice:

"Franconia Township, June 7, 1783.

DETECTIVE WORK AMONG THE BENNERS 231

' Here indeed was a fine kettle of fish for "said Jacob Ben-,

ner" to consider. But exactly what manoeuvres Jacob went, through to resolve the problem are not too clear. While a deeddated April 2, 1783 conveyed to Jacob "Heagey" for £700 the90 acres, in question, the following year on November 1,1784, when S-6 Sebastian acquired title to 64 acres from Abraham, Jacob sold the 90 acres also to Sebastian From thisit would appear that Jacob, ignoring Hagee's complaint, madeover the ,90 acres to Sebastian, who, on August 22, 1785 for anominal £50 sold, the property in dispute to Hagey.^'''^ So longas Hagey eventually got clear title to the farm, he was apparently satisfied, for three days later he transferred theproperty to Susannah Moyer.

Meanwhile down in Germantown Jacob had purchased ahouse and 50 acres of land. The property lay between thefarms of Abraham Paul and the Shoemaker land Sebastian

Unruh eventually bought in 1789."^ Having undergone sucha rigorous ordeal in deed-making with Hagey, Jacob seerqs tohave been loth to record his new transaction, the most diligentsearch having failed to uncover from whom he purchased itor the recorded deed. By inferences drawn from deeds relating to Sebastian Unruh's property adjoining, it is. presumed, however, that he bought the house and land from the heirs ofJohn Channel.^'^'* In 1785 the house and land, two horses andone cow were assessed at £335 under Jacob's name; in 1786and 1787 at £366.

On August 30, 1790 Jacob sold the southernmost 25 acresof this property to Sebastian Unruh^'° and probably withinthe next two years the house and remaining land to an un-

known purchaser, possibly one Joseph Cannon.^"^® On April2, 1792 he and his brother Abraham purchased from PhilipBdenborn two adjoining lots of land on the GermantownGreat Road. Jacob's lot consisted of six, and a quarter acres^for which he paid £212,10."^ Abraham's lot, as we haveseen, had a house on it, and so the two brothers and theirfamilies lived there together for the next two years.

On May 28, 1794 Abraham conveyed the house and fourand a half acres to Jacob^'® and removed to Haycock Township, Bucks County. The same day a separate deed was exe-cutedj conveying the remaining one and a half acres -toJacob.^" Early the following spring, on February 12, Jacobsold his own six acres to Abraham Rittenhouse for £430"®

and on the 20th the house and the four and a half acres to

Henry Rinkin for £325."^

Two weeks later on April 2,1795 he purchased from AdamSiter, jr., of Radnor Township, Delaware County, "late Chester County,"- a messuage, barn, spring-house and 84 acres ofland,"- This property lay along the Darby-Paoli Road nearMiles Run and not far from the Chester County line. Why hemoved to a large farm in Delaware County remains a mystery.First he had given up a 90-acre farm in Franconia, then a 50-acre farm in Germantown. Why now did he return to farmingon such a large scale, particularly when he had begun to stylehimself a mason? Probably during the years his brotherAbraham—^then calling himself a house carpenter—^was living'with him, Jacob had decided there was more of a future inbuilding than in weaving, the trade by which he had beenlisted up to this time. He had therefore, prompted by Abra-

ham, acquired a proficiency in the masonry trade in the lastfew years; but why move out to the country if so motivated ?

Whatever his reason, away he moved to Radnor Township.August 30th of the following year, 1796, "Jacob Benner, weaver, and Hannah his wife, of Radnor' Township" sold thelast bit of the Germantown Road property—one and a halfacres—to Casper Strouse, a butcher, for £45."® It will benoted that temporarily, at least, he had returned to stylinghimself a weaver, thugh it may have been merely for the purpose of identification in conveying title. The deed was alsopeculiar in that it was "acknowledged July 31, 1797," threefull months after .Strouse had conveyed the property toCharles Nice who by now had acquired the rest, of theland not sold to Rinkin. The property eventually became atavern operated by the Maison family and known in lateryears as the "Golden Swan" where elections were held for theupper part of Germantown.

For a person with such a distinct aversion to recordingdeeds, Jacob now entered upon a remarkable career of landtransfers, presumably most of them for investment or speculation. On April 18, 1797 he purchased for £300 a messuageand lot of ground on the south side of Brown between Delaware 3rd and 4th Streets in the Northern Liberties of Phila

delphia."^ He bought the property from Peter Weckerly, abutcher, and sold it a year later on January 23, 1798 to Abraham Guider of "Tradyffrin" Township, Chester County, for£700.

Two days after Jacob had purchased the Brown Streetproperty, he conveyed the 84-acre Delaware County farm toBenjamin Davis, a Radnor Township tailor, for £1200."®One day later on April 21, 1797 he entered into an agreementwith Samuel Huzzard, house carpenter of Chester County, whereby for five shillings was conveyed to Jacob, here styled

The elder Jacob and his second wife Mary—possibly thedaughter of Isaac and Barbara (Grater) Hunsicker—lived in.Germantown until 1831, then on June 1st of that year sold thehouse and lot to Thomas Messinger of New York for $3000.^®®By 1835 he was back at 189 N. 3rd Street next door to hisson; since he was listed as a gentleman in the Directories fromthen on, it may be inferred he had finally retired from activework.

He was not yet done with real estate, however, for in thefall of 1831 on October 11th he had purchased as an investment for $4500 a parcel of land on Wood Street around thecorner from the 3rd Street houses, on which were three smallbrick dwellings.^®^ The lot extended north 50 feet from WoodStreet to the east line of the 3rd Street lots, giving him areversed L-shaped piece of property altogether, with frontages on both 3rd and Wood Streets.

In spite of the various sums of money which had passedthrough the elder Jacob's hands during his long and activecareer, his personal estate was quite small. According to theinventory made March 24th by Allen Smith and Charles H.Roberts, debts amounting to $30 were due the estate, and withthe household brought the appraisal to only $168.35.

His son Jacob's estate was considerably larger and verymuch more worldly in its assortment; it included:"Amount of money in the Bank $151.461 Share of Arch St. Theatre Stock 276.Bond and Mortgage of G. W. Heberton 3000.6 Doz. Horse Collars '24.1 Gold Watch 50.00

Jacob's two eldest daughters appear to have been womenof more, than average competence; their lives hold several circumstances in common.

' Mary, the eldest daughter, was married first to GeorgeLeidy, concerning whom nothing is known except that Marywas divorced from him "a vinculo matrimonii" in 1807Byhim; she had one child, a daughter Maria Leidy, who was bornaboiit 1800.

, Maria Benner Leidy's second husband, John Clinger, wasa cordwainer whose name appeared briefly in the Philadelphia Directories from 1819 through 1821 when he and Marialived at Kunckle above Noble Street, not far from Jacob Ben-ner's 3rd Street house. Where they lived from 1822 to 1829,the .year of. John's death, has not been discovered. Possiblyit was in one of the three Wood Street houses, though not until1837 did Mary Glinger's name appear, listed at 29 Wood.'

When her brother Jacob, Jr., died early in 1838 she at. oncemoved in .with her father and step-mother and was living withthem at 189 N. 3rd when her father died a month later. After

this for a time she ran a boarding house at that address, butin '43 and '44 was back on Wood Street. Her son Jacob B.Clinger had died of consumption in 1841 and his widow Elizabeth had moved into, the Wood Street house .the year after hisdeath and was listed as a milliner. Mary seems to have lived

with her for a time: in '45 and '46 they were both back on 3rdStreet. After '46 their names disappeared from the Directories.

What happened to Elizabeth has not been definitely ascertained, but Mary eventually made her home with her daughterMaria Leidy Hess, wife of Peter Hess, a tobacconist whofrom 1847 to 1854 took over the 3rd Street property. In 1856he moved to 5th Street and lived at 520 N. 5th from 1860 to

his death about 1877. At this address Mary Clinger also diedat the age of 87 years. The notice of her passing, in the Philadelphia Public Ledger for Thursday, December 31, 1868 statedthe funeral would proceed to Germantown from the residenceof her son-in-law; she is no doubt buried in the MennoniteCemetery though her grave has not been identified.

In her will, dated April 16, 1850 and proved January 13,1869,^®^ she left $500 to her daughter Maria Hess and $50each to Mary Elizabeth Clinger and John J. Clinger, childrenof her deceased son Jacob Clinger, with the proviso they werenot to receive the money until after the death of Peter Hess. The income and interest from the rest of her estate she devised

H.Hess were named executors. S-53 Ann Benner

Mary Clinger's sister Ann had no better luck than she inher matrimonial ventures. Her first husband James Ezekiel

Harlan, was a carpenter by trade; not until seven years aftertheir marriage did his name appear in the Directories at anaddress on Diamond near George. By 1835, the year of hisdeath, they had moved to 4 N. 12th Street at, which addressAnn ran a boarding house after his death until 1843, emulating her sister Mary.

There she had a "star boarder" in the person of one Alexander Barber, a cordwainer, who quite probably had b^nrecommended to her by her deceased brother Jacob, the saddler. Barber from 1823 to 1829 had lived and worked at a

house on the southeast corner of 13th and Market Streets, then operated a shoe store from 1829 to at least 1881 at 487Market, moving to the Harlans in 1837, the Panic Year, probably when business fell off.

In 1844 he moved to 33 N. 11th Street and the followingyear .Ann took over the house, running it as a boarding establishment until 1849. Barber lived at the same address, continuing as her "star boarder" until 1850 when they finallymarried and moved to the northeast corner of 13th and Filbert

tion over the title of the property, she moved to 1600 WoodStreet where she was listed in the Directories until 1868,when her name was dropped.

Her will—apparently a second and later one from thatmentioned in the codicil of her sister Mary Clinger's will—was dated March 4,1869 and proved April 9,1870.=^"^ In it sheleft all her estate to Maria Hess, provided that only in theevent the legal proceedings then pending to secure title to theproperty on the northeast corner of 13th and Filbert Streets, resulted in her favor, her grand-nephew William H. Lyne, sonof Thomas H. Lyne, was to receive $1000, half of it when hereached the age of 21 and the remaining half when he became25. Her niece Maria Hess and friend Robert Hays who laterdeclined to serve, were named executors.

Unlike her elder sister, she had no children by either ofher husbands. Her unfortunate youngest sister S-54 HannahBenner, was of unsound mind and died unmarried. In 1838at the time of Jacob, Jr's. death, she was under the "guardianship of Peter Hess," who with his wife cared for her untilher death in her 84th year "after a long and lingering illness."According to the Philadelphia Ledger for Thursday, March 14,1872 her funeral was to proceed to Germantown from hernephew's residence, 520 N. 5th Street.

For some reason—^perhaps because of the insanity oftheir youngest sister Hannah—neither of S-5 Jacob's sonsmarried. The only information uncovered regarding theirrelatively brief lives has already been noted in the precedingpages.

their individual lines has presented few of the difficulties encountered in tracing their older cousins.

Furthermore, the task has been considerably lightened bythe work of that early indefatigable genealogist the Rev. A. J.Fretz.of Milton, N. 3., in whose volumes covering the Moyerfamilies and Fretz families, several of the Benner lines arenoted, though not distinguished as to paternity. As a result,it has not been felt necessary to go into such extensive detailin identifying each line. A reasonably successful effort hasbeen made to supply missing dates, however, the lack ofwhich constitutes the only great fault in the Rev. Fretz's work.

The name of the second youngest son of Bastian Benner isnot found in the extant records until 1778, when, in the 6thClass returns of the Franconia Militia Company he is listed asbeing liable for the fine of £3,5 which he and his elder brotherswere assessed for absenteeism on muster days.^^®

Tax returns for the County first list him the followingyear when he was taxed, as in 1780 also, on an estate of £20.In 1781 the tax itself on this estate was £2,10.

The next year his name appears briefly below that of JohnKeyser ,on the Germantown tax returns, assessed for £1,0,0tax.211 It may be assumed he had gone there to,help his brothers settle themselves in their new homes. On December 9,1782 he went through with the formality of releasing hisrights to his brother Abraham's ISO-acres^^^ ^nd on March10, 1783 to his brother Christian's 156 acres.^^® He seems tohave married early this year, and started housekeeping on 60aOres of Abraham's farm. The assessed valuation of the land

and homestead, a horse and three cows was £209. On November 1, 1784 he finally purchased outright from his brotherAbraham for £625, 64 acres^^^ which included the above-men-

tioned 60 acres. Here he spent the rest of his life, representing the only one of the second generation to remain on hisfather's 400-acre plantation.

In 1785 he was taxed on only 55 acres at £179, presumablybecause he was renting out the other nine, but he soon tookover the full acreage and by 1799 the assessment on it, twohorses and five cows, was $628, taxed at $2.45. During thisinterval" Sebastian and Catherine mortgaged their farm forone year to Paul Engle, merchant of Philadelphia, for £175,the date of the mortgage beiiig January 25, 1790. Apparentlythey had the mortgage extended, for it was not satisfied UntilFebruary 7, 1794, when Engle Bensell, executor of the estateof Paul Engle, dieceased, acknowledged payment in full.^i® In-1818 the assessment had been raised to $1657, the chattelsbeing a horse and six cows for a total tax of $3.77. In 1821 thevaluation had again increased, this time to^ $1722, but a reduced tax rate, and another horse, set the tax at only $3.93.The year of his death the property was assessed at only $1462.

Besides being an industrious farmer, Sebastian took considerable interest in the affairs of the growing community. In1803, '07, '10, '11 and again in 1819 he was elected one of thetwo Supervisors of the Township, George Sholl being theother. In 1811 and 1812 Sebastian and Philip Sholl were theTax Collectors for the Township.^"

As his children neared maturity he realized his 65 acreswould not be adequate for their needs after his death and sofelt it necessary to provide for them by buying additionalacreage. Across the county line in Hilltown Township, BucksCounty, he bought for £1000 on April 26, 1808, 113 acres ofland lying along Stump Road from Abraham Clemmer,^!^father of the girl his eldest son married. Though in all Fran-conia tax returns Sebastian is listed as a farmer, in the BucksCounty deeds he is listed as a cordwainer or leather-worker,

In this year he married andmoved to Bucks County where he purchased 67 acres-of landin Hilltown adjoining the farms of Andrew Hartzel, JohnAllabough, Henry Leidy, John Shelly and John DetWeiler.^^''This property, as well as a wood lot of 10 acres acquired in1830, he continued to own until his death, when his heirs petitioned the Bucks County Orphan's Court for permission tosell it.

Upon an inquest being made, the farm was appraised at$48 an acre or $3,258.90; the woodlot's value was set at $63per acre. On October 4, 1850 the main property was sold toMartin Anglemoyer at $40 an acre for $2,715.75; the woodlotbrought $50 an acre.

S-64 JACOB Benner

Sebastian's fourth child early displayed the singular rovingtendency characteristic of most of the Jacob Benners descended from Bastian. His name is first listed in the UpperSalford tax returns in 1812 where he was renting 100 acres

from Nicholas Buck and had a horse and cow of his own. Apparently not satisfied with this location he seems to havemoved on to Milford Township^ Bucks County where from1813 to 1815 he was taxed on a horse, two cows and a dog, butno land. Then he moved back to Franconia for a year and wastaxed as a single man, as he did not marry until early Autumn.(The tax returns were always made up in the early Springbefore planting time.)

The year after his marriage in 1815 he moved over to Hill-town Township on to the remaining 48 acres of the tract

his father had purchased from Abraham Clemmer in 1808,renting the farm from his father. He lived here until 1824, theyear of his sister Edith's marriage to Samuel Funk, when herelinquished the property to them and returned to Franconiafor a year.

In 1825 he moved to Towamencin Township, MontgomeryCounty where he rented 35 acres and dwelling for two years. Then on August 3,1827 he bought 83 acres in Gwynedd Township from Dr. Henry Fry which he held until 1833, selling iton December 3rd of that year for $1010 to Michael Derr ofWorcester Township.^®- His reason for selling quite possiblylay in the probable death of his wife Elizabeth a short timepreviously: on March 23, 1833 he had received in his wife'sname $71.91 from the estate of his father-in-law Isaac Delp.-^'^

After this he is reputed to have moved down to Philadelphia to live, but efforts to trace him further have proved inconclusive. Three Jacob Benners lived in Philadelphia between 1835 and 1865: the cabinet-maker mentioned under

JS-38 Jacob; a currier and a brickmaker. But as S-64 Jacob'strade has not been identified so far, it has been impossible todetermine which of the Philadelphia Jacobs—if any of them—was Sebastian's son.

Johannes Benner

. Bastian Banner's youngest son was just 18 when the Fran-con^ Militia Company was formed in 1777. To the confusionof historians and genealogists, he and John Benner, son ofthe neighboring blacksmith, Christian Benner and wife Barbara Wilhelm, were both placed in the 5th Class of the SecondCompany. Not until 1782 was a distinction made betweenthese two young men so it is difficult to ascertain which wasliable for the smaller fine: one of them in 1777 who was fined

only £2 that year, received on April 27th, 1778 from Col. Englethe sum of £7,13,6 in full pay as a substitute private in the5th Battalion.248 That year, however, both were liable forfines of £3,5. and in 1779 for £2,15.

The State tax returns for 1779 list Johannes as havinga taxable estate of £15, subject to double-taxation because ofnon-participation in the War. The Township returns list hisestate at £20 for this year and for 1780, the probable year ofhis marriage—as by 1781 he had acquired 52 acres of land, ahorse and cow. He was therein noted as a non-juror, his taxable estate in 1781 being £148.

The following year he had doubled his acreage and had100 acres and dwelling, two horses and two cows, all rated at£260. December 9th of this year he relinquished to his brother

' In 1785 he gave up the farm in Franconia which he appears to have rented and moved down to Springfield Townshipwith his elder brother Abraham. There for three years herented 10 acres and dwelling and probably worked at hisweaver's trade. On May 26, 1789 John purchased from DanielWampole a dwelling and 50 acres pf land back in Franconia, situated about a mile northwest of the old homestead. Thisproperty he mortgaged on July 6, 1791 for one year to JohnEngle of Germantown, the consideration being £100.^®^Though he lived here until 1795, the obligation apparently wasnever met, and not until 1932 was the title of the propertycleared by Court Order.

• .'As has been related, he, with S-3 Isaac Benner, engagedin transporting produce to Philadelphia in 1778, at least, tothe confusion and indignation of the authorities but afterthe withdrawal of the British from Philadelphia, he. turnedto his trade of blacksmith. His name appeared briefly in1781 in Franconia when-he was listed as a single man withtaxable estate of £2,5.

'When S-3 Isaac moved to Germantown in 1782, JohnSouder and his bride Mary Benner went along, on April10th of the following year buying a house and five acres;115 perches of land from Jacob and Susannah Rittenhousefor £250.2®® This property in Germantown lay on the northeast side of the Great Road—actually in Creesam—and wasbounded by the lands "late of William Allen" and of GeorgeHoffman. This was exactly one month after John and Maryhad released their rights in Mary's brother Christian's shareof Bastian's real estate^®' and four months since they had

done the same thing for Abraham Banner's share.^®®

This year of 1783 the Germantown property was asrsessed in John Souder's name at £219; in 1785 the assessedvaluation was set at £184; and in '87 and '88 at £192. OnApril 1 of this last year they sold the "messuage and lot ofland" for £250 to Bernard Shugart, a tailor^®® who hadstarted, buying land along the Great Road. It will be recalled that part of his estate was eventually sold in 1825.toS-55 Jacob Benner, Jr.; the two separate tracts formed partof his total property.-- For some unexplained reason John and Mary Souder

then returned to Franconia for two years where he waslisted on the tax returns in 1789 and '90 as having 100 acresof land and dwelling. He was also assessed there in 1791jbut on. May-19 he bought from his brother-in-law S-3 Is^ac

for £250, 171/4 acres of land adjoining Isaac's farm, whichlay on the northwest side of Gorgas Lane^'® as previouslynoted. He seems to have immediately sold three acres ofthis to William Heisler, and the following year four acresto his oldest brother-in-law S-1 Christian Benner.^^^ As the

deeds for these two conveyances were never recorded, hisselling prices for the two separate tracts are unknown.

Two years later on September 5, 1794 he sold the remaining 101/^ acres and the house he had built on that partof the land to Daniel Pastorious, a tanner.-" A year laterPastorious transferred the house and three of the acres toPaul Bishop of Bristol Township for £325, and the remaining land to Nichols Unruh, father of S-31 George F. Unruh, who eventually sold it to N-7 Henry Benner! Judging bythe price Bishop paid for his three acres, it may be assumedthat John and Mary Souder received a reasonably fair pricewhen they sold the 10^ acres to Pastorious, but again thespecific deed went unrecorded.

Where the Souders moved to in 1794 remains unknown.Lack of Germantown and Philadelphia tax returns for thenext few years, plus the singular coincidence of two JohnSouders living in the Northern Liberties of Philadelphia atthis time only serve to confuse the problem further. Ofthese two Souders, the one who died in 1808 had a wifeKatherine, and the one who died in 1821 a wife Elizabeth:Neither, therefore could have been S-8 John Souder, sincehis wife Mary was presumably still living at the time of herbrother S-8 Isaac's death in 1828: in his estate accountingthere was an item "Paid George Unruh for Mary Souder'snote, $51.75."

Librarian's Report

We have just completed another record year here at Historical Hall.

It was a busy year and, we hope, one of progress. Qver twenty-two hundred persons have been our callers. Of this number eight hundred have

been visitors to the museum. The balance have been research workers —

each one seeking some particular line of information. All, without excep

tion, were unstinting in their praise of our facilities and service. The

mail inquiries continue to mount and are fast assuming full scale, propor

tions. The states represented by visitors this year in addition to Penn

sylvania were . California, Connecticut, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland,

Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Utah,

and Wyoming.

We join our sister societies in making an appeal to our people not to

destroy or discard old papers or books without proper advisement. The

Historical Society of Montgomery County desires to acquire and preserve

deeds, diaries, documents, receipts, account books, manuscripts, letters,

minute books of organizations, church records, marriage certificates,

pamphlets, publications, magazines, county newspapers, scrap books,

county postmarks, Bible records, photographs, programs, etc. Books

dealing with genealogy and Montgomery- County and its people are

wanted. Any article or book written by a Montgomery Countian or bear

ing the imprint of Montgomery County will be appreciated.

We hope persons settling estates, preparing for an auction, moving

or house cleaning will be careful not to destroy any such items mentioned

above pertaining to Montgomery County. Bring them in to us and let us

be the judge of their historical value!

The library will be closed for the annual vacation period from Monday,

August 21, until Labor Bay, and will reopen Tuesday, September 5.

JANE KEPLINGER BUREIS,

Acting LibrarianAugust, 1950.
