John Allen and Elisha Walker Rumsey were the first people to settle in what we now call Ann Arbor. John Allen and his wife, Ann, came to the Michigan Territory from the state of Virginia. Elisha Walker Rumsey and his wife, Mary Ann, came from the state of New York. Allen and Rumsey wanted to make money by selling land to people moving to Michigan.

Sauk Sauk TrailTrail
Allen and Rumsey
traveled from Detroit
through the February snow on
a one horse sleigh.
They were looking for a good site on the Huron River
for a new community.
They followed a Native American trail, called the
Sauk Trail, along the Huron River.

13
The trail led right to the edge of the water. Since it was winter and
the river was frozen, Allen and Rumsey were able to cross over
the ice with their horse and sleigh.

When Allen and Rumsey reached the other side of the Huron River they saw a wide hill with large
oak trees and a little creek.
They found a clearing among
the trees.
The clearing, the creek, and the river made a
good place for their new village.

Allen and Rumsey were probably very excited because they found the perfect site for their new community. They bought the land for $1.25 an acre. Allen bought 480 acres and Rumsey bought 160 acres.
