INTERNATIONAL INNER WHEEL HISTORY

International Inner Wheel is one of the largest international organisations for women and is currently chartered in more than 100 countries. Members are united by friendship and a commitment to service in their communities. Inner Wheel is non-sectarian or party political.

The objects of International Inner Wheel are: To promote true friendship To encourage the ideals of personal service To foster international understanding Inner Wheel began when a group of women who had been helping their Rotarian husbands with community service projects during the First World War, were inspired to join forces in an organized group in the post war years. They met on 15th November 1923 at a Bath House (chosen because it was free!), to establish a ‘Ladies Rotary Club’. Rotary International would not countenance such a name, so at a second meeting on 10th January 1924 the Inner Wheel Club of Manchester, under the leadership of Mrs. Margarette Golding, was formed. They took the name Inner Wheel from the inner cog of the Rotary Wheel. The roots, from which Inner Wheel has grown, were established in 1934 when the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland was formed, with Mrs. Oliver Golding as the Founder President. The first club formed outside of Great Britain and Ireland was the IW Club of Ballarat, Victoria in 1931. The IW Club of Napier was the tenth registered Club outside of Great Britain and was chartered in November 1936, it was the only club in New Zealand until the IW Club of Taumarunui was formed in 1947. The 1960’s saw clubs set up in Belfast, Christchurch South, Christchurch East, Dunedin South, Fitzroy and Turangi. The first District was NZ298 formed in 1971 and then District NZ293 in 1976. District NZ293 was divided in 1981 into NZ293 and NZ294, District NZ297 was formed in 1982 and District NZ291 was split off NZ293 in 1989. International Inner Wheel was formed in 1967 and the first international conference was held in 1970 at The Hague, in The Netherlands. International Inner Wheel is recognized by the United Nations as a non-governmental organization. This means that Inner Wheel is an observer with consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). IIW has 6 representatives, 2 in Geneva, and 2 each in New York and Vienna, each sitting on different committees – Rights of the Family; Status of Women; Rights of the Child; Human Rights; Committee on Ageing and Narcotic Drugs.

THE RED ROSE OF FRIENDSHIP In December 1969 Audrey Sarjeant, who was the editor of the International Newsletter, used a white rose on a yellow cover. The Editor explained that she had taken the idea from the Scandinavian Clubs. In Scandinavia there is a custom of presenting a single red rose of friendship when visiting friends, and this custom was used by the Club there of presenting a single long-stemmed red rose to an honoured guest or speaker. The Editor had changed it to a white rose of Yorkshire to honour the President, Helena Foster (second President of International Inner Wheel), and it was cheaper to print that way!

The newsletter continued with this rose until 1970 when the cover of the magazine changed to ‘jewel’ colours, and the white rose was printed in black!

In May 1986 the Newsletter used a new rose drawn from life by Helen Taylor, the daughter of IIW Editor Lucy Davis. This rose had been named ‘Inner Wheel’ by the growers in honour of the Golden Jubilee of Great Britain and Ireland in 1984.

Advice Re Charter Document from Shirley Crowley – March 2008

As far as I am aware, there never was, nor is, a Charter Document for the National Council of Inner Wheel Clubs of New Zealand. (That was the official title then. It was deemed necessary by International at that time. It was changed at a later date to Inner Wheel New Zealand). We were given permission to form a National Council by the then IIW President Margaret Spenning. This happened after the vote was taken "On the formation of a National Council forthwith" The proposal was put by the Dunedin Club. The fact that we were taking a vote from all the Clubs making up part of our (soon to be National Body) was all the evidence that International needed. Margaret Spenning actually spoke at Invercargill on the merits of a National Body and outlined how Norway managed - with a Council. Margaret was present at the first Council Meeting held in my bedroom at the Ascot Park Hotel. There were Minutes duly taken by Beth McNeil and they should be in the Minute Book for the National Council. (It might pay to read the Minute Book). There is a difference between National Councils and Associations. On advice from both Margaret Spenning and from Alison Dowson we took the more economical path and formed a National Council. It is easier to run with a representative from each District and a separate Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. (At the time of formation, we had no Editor). These people all have suitable qualifications as printed in the Rule Book. You may not remember but we were very short of money at the time. Clubs have a Charter Document. Districts are formed when permission is sought from the International Body of the time. Districts are formed when four or more clubs within an area decide they would like to have a District. Again, permission is sought from International and a suitable number is allocated by the International Body.

INNER WHEEL NEW ZEALAND DAY: “Walk and Talk” Whilst presiding over a ‘’Future Focus – Inner Wheel New Zealand Training Day‘’ held at Vaughan Park, Long Bay, Auckland in 2001; the idea of an ‘’Inner Wheel New Zealand Day or Walk and Talk Day was suggested. A day to give members more time annually to ‘’talk’’ about all aspects of our international organisation and a day to complement our International Inner Wheel Day, held annually on the 10th January. Members embraced the suggestion with enthusiasm and the first day of September (or as near as possible to that date), was chosen to annually celebrate our Inner Wheel membership here in the Southern Hemisphere. Clubs were encouraged to plan an activity focusing on members having fun, friendship and fellowship – and so - our Inner Wheel New Zealand Day - Walk and Talk Day - began on 1st September 2001.

INNER WHEEL in NEW ZEALAND By 1990, New Zealand had 2500 Inner Wheel members, in 84 clubs, in five Districts, and the workload of the Board Member had increased markedly. Co-coordinating the activities of all Districts was a daunting task for one person. A presentation was made to the Nelson conference in 1984 and following this, an ad hoc committee was formed under the chairmanship of Alison Dowson to investigate the viability of a National Council. The report to the 1987 conference in Tauranga provoked lively debate. The move towards a National Council proved controversial and it was not until 1990, at the Invercargill conference, that a majority of delegates voted to form a National Governing Body. The inaugural meeting took place on the Sunday morning of the Conference – 14th October 1990 at 7.00am. After a lengthy gestation, the National Council was born. The National Governing Body is made up of the President/National Representative, Vice President/Deputy Representative, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor, Past President (who is the extension Co-Ordinator) and the five District Chairmen. They meet twice a year in March and August. IWNZ Conferences have been held:

A Tribute to Morna Moss a Gracious and Dignified Lady District Meeting held in New Plymouth 28th October 2000

Morna Moss (formerly Wood) played a very big part in Inner Wheel New Zealand for almost 40 years. She managed also to bring up six children and was always a great support to her husband, Wilf, although he in turn, supported her great interest and enthusiasm for Inner Wheel. She was a Charter Member of the Inner Wheel Club of Fitzroy in 1964 and served the Club as President several times. She also rose up through the ranks to District and International level, being a member of the International Board in 1980/82. Her home Rotary Club of Fitzroy, recognizing her contribution to our organization and to the local community by presenting her with a Paul Harris Fellow Award in January 1983. During the 1970’s she was responsible for starting several new Clubs in the District and played a great part in the formation of District 294. Extension was her forté and she has told stories of venturing off around the North Island with her extension officer and friend Noni Boon. This was a considerable sacrifice to her husband and growing family at home, but one she felt committed to make. She was a fountain of knowledge, which she readily shared with others. She was my Secretary during my first term of office as President of the Inner Wheel Club of Fitzroy in 1987/88, and it was then I really got to know her as a wonderful friend. Lindsay and I had so much fun with Morna and Wilf when we shared accommodation at Rotary Conferences, on more than one occasion. Once we stopped off at Ashley Park, near Waitotara, on the way back to New

Plymouth and she was thrilled to acquire several pieces of antique lace, which she has incorporated into one of the beautiful quilts she made. She loved the garden, growing flowers for many floral art displays and the floral arrangements in the Holy Trinity Church at Fitzroy where she worshipped. She was always ready to share her love of God with others and latterly, lead a group “Footsteps” for some of the younger women of the Parish. She enjoyed playing golf, and although she had not played regularly for some time, told me that she wanted to get back into playing, on the last occasion that I saw her. These were a few of her interests and she was always a loving mother to her family. This was reflected upon at her funeral when her sister Margaret and daughters Shirley and Jeanette, told of the love, wisdom, patience, loyalty and thoughtfulness she bought into their lives. It was lovely to see her so happy with Alan, after being on her own for several years after Wilf’s death. It seems to have been so unfair to them both, having had such a short time together since their marriage last December, but she was there for Alan when he had eye surgery in February and at the proud moment, when he received the Order of Merit of New Zealand at Government House in August. For me, our Inner Wheel Club of Awapuni Change-over, with Morna as our guest speaker, will always be a special memory as it was the last speech that she was to give on behalf of Inner Wheel, a much loved organization that she spent so much of her life supporting. We will miss her so much for the friendliness, wisdom, knowledge and all the special attributes that made Morna the person she was. Jill Knowles President Inner Wheel Club of Awapuni 24th October 2000

DISTRICT NZ293 HISTORY & PAST OFFICE HOLDERS

FORMED – District NZ293 was formed on 1st July 1976. It was then known as just District 293 DISBANDED – 30th June 2020

HOW – New Zealand’s very first Inner Wheel Club, the Inner Wheel Club of Napier was formed in 1936 and this club still plays a vital role in District NZ293. However Inner Wheel in New Zealand didn’t start growing rapidly until the 1960’s and New Zealand’s first District 298 was formed in 1971. With a growing number of Inner Wheel Clubs in both the South Island and North Island in the 1970’s, discussions were held with the World President, Gwen Davies about the feasibility of forming a separate District in the North Island. A meeting was held in Taupo in May 1976 to finalize details and with a lot of help from NZ Board member, Marge Allen, the first official meeting was held in Tauranga with an Executive Meeting, a District Meeting and a Charter presentation to the Inner Wheel Club of Tauranga. The first District Chairman was Nola Paulsen. In the first year the Inner Wheel Club of Stratford was chartered, and this was followed by 5 new clubs in the second and third years. Expansion continued in the North Island at a steady rate and in 1981 the decision was made to divide District 293 into 2 Districts and District 294 was formed. This gave us 2 District in the North Island. However, by 1989 expansion was such that the decision was made to split off all club’s north of the Bombay Hills and the new District of 291 was formed on 1st July 1989. In 2006 NZ was inserted in front of district Numbers to avoid confusion with other countries with the same District Number and we became known as District NZ293. NUMBER OF CLUBS AT TIME OF FORMATION – There were 7 clubs at the time of formation – Napier, Fitzroy, Katikati, Otumoetai, Western Napier, Tauranga South and Tauranga THE FIRST CLUB CHARTERED AFTER FORMATION –Inner Wheel Club of Stratford, 14th May 2016 Tauranga Central presented with their Charter. Information on the Date of the Presentation of Charter to the Napier Club From early Minutes 24/11/1939 “the club decided to leave Affiliation with Overseas until after the war as it is impossible to send money overseas” 1944 June committee meeting “Affiliation again discussed” 19/2/1947 “Certificate of Affiliation with Inner Wheel in England (dated November 1946) received – it was proposed to frame this”. They did, at a cost of 4/11d. Obviously the Charter as above just arrived by mail.

INNER WHEEL NZ FLAG & DISTRICT BANNERS

IWNZ Banner Aoteoroa – the land of the long, white cloud Emblem of which so many are proud. Mountain peaks, conquered by great and small Playground for the physically challenged – and all.

Fertile foothills, abounding with sheep Farmers, guardians, nurture this land. It’s not theirs to keep. Alluvial plains, ribboned waterways Huge tracts of crops, a patchwork of colours.

Lakes stocked with salmon and beautiful trout Our largest lake, a vast inland sea. Huge native forests where Kauri is king Exotic pines, awaiting felling and milling.

Indented coastlines, sheltered coves, crashing waves Pohutakawa fringed beaches, some wide and sweeping. Great sights for our visitors – forever welcoming.

Nikau palms, solitary, majestic Silver ferns – tread softly, treat with respect. The Koru, gently unfolding. Rebirth, new life. Strong, reaching out.

Nature’s best squeezed into this small land Never crowded here. He kura tangata e kore e rokotanga He kura whenua ka rokohanga

The treasured possessions of men are intangible The treasures of the land are tangible This land we call New Zealand, the land that inspires its people To work and live and play – in harmony and friendship

District NZ291 The different elements depicted in this banner relate to all the individual Clubs in the District. They can identify with: The sunrise, Rangitoto Island, City environs, The Sky Tower, Various water activities, The Harbour Bridge, The waterfront, Pohutakawa Trees, Kowhai blossoms, Hibiscus flowers and Seabirds It was designed and executed by Anne Buckley and Members of the Inner Wheel Club of East Coast Albany Bays, Carole Moulton, Maureen Robins, Gaye Pratt and Yvonne McLean, as sewers and pattern cutters. Every Club Member supplied a piece of her favourite fabric.

District NZ293 – Disbanded 30th June 2020 As District NZ293 had changed so much over the last few years, in 2018 it was decided to create a new banner which reflected the District as it is at present. The new banner is smaller and made of plastic covered fabric, so it is lighter and easier to display. It comprises photographs from around the District together with District NZ293, the Inner Wheel Logo and New Zealand. Every club was asked to submit photographs of their area and the final choice to go on the banner picked by the District Executive. The design and collection of the information for the new banner was overseen by Laurie Bredmore, District Secretary 2018-2020.

Due to no one willing to take office, District NZ293 Disbanded on 30th June 2020. Of the remaining 6 clubs Fairfield, Matamata, Opotiki and Tauranga Central joined District NZ291 and Ahuriri and Napier joined District NZ294 District NZ294

The District Chairman for 1994/95, Sue Carpenter, initiated the idea of a patchwork banner with each Club making a square depicting their particular area. They could use any medium they wished, such as applique, cross stitch, patchwork, fabric painting etc. Sixteen Clubs participated and Sue stitched the Inner Wheel logo and the red rose. The squares were pieced together, quilted and some sections highlighted by Pauline Sargentina of the Inner Wheel Club of Palmerston North. The finished banner was presented at the October District Meeting in 1995.

District NZ297

At the beginning of the 2001/2 Inner Wheel year, District NZ297 did not have a Banner, so District Chairman Evelyn Oliver asked Clubs and individual Members to submit a design. Two were received and a vote was taken at the October 2001 District Meeting. At that stage each of the eleven Clubs had a segment depicting their area or town in whatever way they wished. This banner was finished ten days before the 2002 National Conference in Wellington having been designed, created and stitched by all the members of the Inner Wheel Club of Motueka.

Due to club changes within the District, some closing, and one new, District Chairman Shirley Milligan 2018/19, Cecile Pierce, Barbara Chapman, and Barbara McKinnon combined their efforts and brought the banner up to date for the 2019 Conference in Auckland.

District NZ298 District NZ298’s banner was re-designed in the 2014/15 Inner Wheel year and initiated by Christina King, the then District Chairman. Each club has contributed a square and the banner was then constructed by Bernie Sycamore from Invercargill South and Carol King from Invercargill North. The squares depicted are: Balclutha, The iconic bridge; Dunedin South, The albatross; Mosgiel, Saddle Hill; Oamaru, The little blue penguin; Temuka, A pottery cup and saucer; Timaru, The Timaru ensign; Queenstown, The Earnslaw on Lake Wakitipu; Waimate, A strawberry; Invercargill, Invercargill East, Invercargill South, and Invercargill North, The iconic water tower.
