Provisioning? Any whitepapers, links, URL?

2. How do you mitigate the risk of data growth in an over provisioned pool? I am aware there are

thresholds that can be used as alerts, but what are people doing for available capacity ratiosbased on over provisioned amounts?

Hitachi Device Manager has reporting, monitoring, warning, and limit control for over provisioning ratio.

3. Is Hitachi TrueCopy® Asynchronous software ever going to be supported? Or do we need to

plan on transitioning everything to Hitachi Universal Replicator software?

No, Hitachi TrueCopy Asynchronous is not supported.

4. Can you use Hitachi Universal Replicator software Journal Asynchronous with Hitachi Dynamic

Provisioning V- Volumes?

Hitachi Universal Replicator Journal Volumes are not supported on Dynamic Provisioning Volumes (V-

Volumes).

5. Will this cover the Hitachi Adaptable Modular Storage 2500 thin provisioning as well?

Yes, it pertains to all models (2100, 2300, 2500).

6. Is there a best practice guide for Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning and VMware?

deal with thin provisioning? The one notable guideline is that VMWare’s EagerZeroedThick allocation

policy is not thin provisioning friendly and should be avoided when using thin provisioned LUNs.

Yes, however there are a number of lost or reduced benefits to be aware of. Note that for the general

case the use of thin provisioning inside the external storage is not recommended (any vendor). For

10. How do we balance Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning pool, after adding additional Dynamic

Provisioning pool volumes?

Check on the microcode level of the storage. The Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning user guides for both

11. How do you manage and keep track of Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning pools, V- Volumes, what is

assigned, allocated, how much left over in pool?

You can use Storage Navigator, Storage Navigator Modular 2, Performance Monitor, Command

Control Interface (CCI), Hitachi Device Manager (SNMP Traps and email notification) and Tuning

Manager.

12. What is best practice for external storage Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning: Create pools across

path groups on the Universal Storage Platform V or pools within path groups?

Follow ordinary best practices when configuring external storage. Please contact your local sales

teams for individual customer discussion.

13. What version of device manager supports Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning?

Hitachi Device Manager has supported Dynamic Provisioning for a number of years. The most current

release of Hitachi Device Manager includes incremental enhancements and therefore is always

recommended.

14. Is Hitachi Universal Replicator software only asynchronous?

Yes

15. Are we planning to use Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning in mainframe environment on Universal

Storage Platform V in future?

No

16. What is the recommended maximum threshold of a pool?

It varies widely and depends on customer PO cycle time, rate of pool consumption (data growth),

amount of over subscription and in-house processes in place to monitor and react to storage events.

17. If we add storage to a pre-existing pool, will new storage auto-optimize in the pool? Basically

re-stripe within entire pool?

It depends on microcode level and when the pool was created. Yes, with newer microcode.

18. What code level does Universal Storage Platform V need to perform Zero Page Reclaim?

60-04-xx, however there are additional enhancements in 60-06-xx (TrueCopy and Hitachi Universal

Replicator pairs.)

19. Where I can find some documentation about best practices on Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning

with Oracle ASM and TrueCopy?
