Hitachi Unified Storage VM

O V E R V I E W 2

Information has become our most valuable asset. The challenge for global businesses lies in making it available and secure, while getting the most value from their information.

Unified Storage with Enterprise VirtualizationHitachi Unified Storage VM unifies all data types so you can achieve key business benefits and gain valuable functionality. With industry-leading storage virtualization, HUS VM centralizes storage for critical applica-tions and provides shared services for all your storage systems through a central management interface.

HUS VM advances the business value of enterprise storage:

drives. They all have integrated management to unify the storage environment. It becomes highly efficient and reliable.

Key technologies from the enterprise-level Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform have been included to extend investments even further. Capacity of a single system can grow to over 3PB internally and up to 64PB, includ-ing external storage. Multitenant partitioning allows for secure segmentation of your stor-age customers. Low-risk data migration has no impact on performance. HUS VM is the only unified storage to extend automated tiering to external storage. Enterprise data protection and replication tools help achieve data migration as well as backup operational objectives.

HUS VM delivers an optimal combination of random and sequential performance for both file and block data. These capabilities can help you achieve predictable perfor-mance goals in rapidly changing workload environments. And the ability to automati-cally place metadata tables ensures perfor-mance increases for file access.

Now all file, block and object data can be provisioned, managed and archived throughout its lifecycle, consistently and efficiently. HUS VM promotes faster and easier provisioning of storage for both block and file requirements within virtualized environments, including VMware and Citrix. It provides application-aware data protection for both virtualized and nonvirtualized server environments.

Block storage is accomplished through high-performance, Hi-Star™ crossbar switch-based architecture, with virtualization controllers that automate storage tiering. This capability delivers high random and sequential per-formance for data warehouse and decision support applications. File storage relies on a unique, hardware-accelerated, object-based file system. It uses custom FPGAs, which sup-port intelligent file tiering and migration, and virtual NAS functionality, without compromising performance or scalability.

Hitachi Unified Storage VM is an evolution in Hitachi virtualization technology. It universally manages file, block and object data at the entry enterprise level, without compromising performance, scalability efficiency.

Organizations must address the conflicted goals of managing data growth, control-ling increasing costs and complexities, and making efficient use of both existing and new resources. And with the rampant rise in unstructured data, traditionally separate file and block solutions are no longer adequate for meeting business cost-efficiency goals.

IT leaders are comparing unified platforms against enterprise storage systems to select the right solution. To date, this choice has meant making tradeoffs for greater flexibil-ity, investment protection and cost savings. However, companies can now simultaneously accelerate efficiencies and economics with a better-balanced information infrastructure.

Now, you can get the functionality that you require for the best value.

Unified and Virtualized: One Platform for All Data TypesHitachi Data Systems introduces a new, unified, entry enterprise storage system for all data to help businesses satisfy their growth requirements. Hitachi Unified Storage VM (HUS VM) is the first unified system with enter-prise storage virtualization that can centrally consolidate file, block and object data (with Hitachi Content Platform).

Hitachi Unified Storage VM: Highlights Reclaim Capacity and Increase Utilization

HUS VM inherits the enterprise virtualization technology from our market-leading Virtual Storage Platform. Hitachi is the market leader with more storage virtualization controllers shipped than any other manufacturer. HUS VM offers the highest external virtualized capacity available in this class, up to 64PB, which may include storage systems from different manu-facturers. Organizations using Hitachi storage virtualization have reduced capital expendi-tures 20% to 50% by reclaiming capacity to increase overall capacity utilization. Many have found the payback is less than 1 year.

Centrally Manage All Your Storage

HUS VM can provide end-to-end central man-agement of all virtualized internal and external storage. Simplifying common storage opera-tions results in up to 50% fewer management steps. Hitachi Command Suite also provides a unified dashboard view of block, file and object consumers. Our customers have been able to reduce their operating expenses 20% to 40% through common management.

Achieve Higher Availability for Your Information Assets

Reduce business risk by ensuring uninter-rupted access to data. HUS VM is built on leg-endary Hitachi reliability to offer a 100% data availability guarantee. Perform online micro-code updates seamlessly, without path failover and failback. Both block and file controllers feature cluster technologies to protect access to data. Gain peace of mind with Hi-Track® Remote Monitoring system’s advanced sys-tem diagnostics, continuous monitoring and “call home” features for rapid repair.

Increase Data Mobility

Data migration with HUS VM requires minimal effort. Virtualizing storage reduces the out-age window to applications to speed up technology refresh. In fact, data migration can be performed with 80% less effort than host- or replication-based methods. Because the storage controller is moving data in the background, there is no impact to perfor-mance. HUS VM also extends tiered storage to external storage, and Hitachi Dynamic Tiering automates data placement for optimal performance and cost.
