FOREWORD by The CaptainThis book is a record of the past 15 months - not a full Commission but a period which hascovered a wide variety of tasks, from our main operational role as a strike carrier, to beingFlagship for the Commander-in-Chief when Her Majesty the Queen presented a new Colour tothe Western Fleet.

Aircraft carrier operations are the most complex and demanding of any undertaken by thearmed forces today. Their success depends as much on all those who provide the essential supportbelow decks as it does on the aircrew and the flight deck parties. Each and every one of you hasplayed his vital part in the team effort required to operate our aircraft efficiently and safely.

I have been proud to command such a splendid ship and her ship's company who haveresponded so well to every call made upon them. I take this opportunity to thank you all for pullingyour full weight and to send you and your families best wishes for the future.

The Admiralty Board on behalf of the Defence Council havingdirected that Her Majesty's Ship Eagle is to be recommissioned atDevonport on 6th January, 1969 or as soon afterwards as circumstancespermit, you are to proceed forthwith to commission her for a GeneralService Commission.

On commissioning you will be under my full command.

Duringthis period you are to bring to my immediate notice, and to the noticeof the appropriate local authority, anything which gives cause fordissatisfaction with the ship or any part of her and any other mattersof importance, in particular those relating to the Welfare of the Ship'sCompany.

With these words, read by the Captain to the ship's company, their families, friends and a hostof distinguished guests, H.M.S. Eagle was Commissioned on Wednesday, 5th March 1969.

HOW IT BEGANOf course, for many of us, it had all started quite a while before. From early October 1968, the biggest and best bird class carrierhad been in Devonport for docking and the rectification of a multitude of defects. For a couple of months we had enjoyed thehospitality of H.M.S. Drake and had kept ourselves fit by tramping to and from the ship four times a day. In early January wemoved back on board and said goodbye to most of those remaining from the last Commission who did not have the good fortuneto remain longer, and the new ship's company began to arrive.

For many, particularly all those for whom this was their first ship, Eagle must have been a sorry sight. Two months in dry dock,with no-one living on board, had left their mark and with a great deal of work still to do there was little enough time to worryabout cleaning her up. But cleaned up she was. Quickly messdecks were transformed from dull and cheerless boxes into places fitfor habitation - well almost - and began to acquire all those various touches and individual ornamentations which make all thedifference. More slowly the maze of dockyard clutter began to be removed; the flight deck became revealed as a relatively flat andopen expanse after looking like a mining construction site for most of the winter; acres of grubby, oily hardboard were found toconceal decks which were quite clean and colourful in places; smoke came from the funnel, machinery began to hum, our ownelectricity became available (at least from time to time) - in short Eagle was getting back into business. And so to -

COMMISSIONING DAYThe Gods clearly knew that it was agreat occasion. After weeks of miserableweather, 5th March dawned as bright andclear as any day one could wish for. Atrifle cool but the sun shone and wives andsweethearts trooped aboard looking gayand colourful and in festive mood.Distinguished guests were legion. TheLord Mayor of Exeter with his Lady andretainers and no less than 11 admiralsincluding the First Sea Lord, AdmiralSir Michael Le Fanu, G.C.B., D.S.C.,himself a former Eagle commandingofficer and joined on this occasion by sixother former Eagle captains.

Few could fail to be moved by thesimple ceremony and service held in thehangar. The White Ensign was hoisted asthe band played `God Save the Queen',the ancient acts of Dedication and ofBlessing of the Ship were spoken, theCaptain addressed us all and the com-missioning cake was cut. The seventhCommission of H.M.S. Eagle officiallybegan.

Preparing to cut the cake

Two days later we sailed for sea trials,Friday, 7th March setting the precedentfor weekend departures which becamethe custom of the Commission. Anotherglorious sunny day imparted just theright sense that all was right with theworld and indeed almost everything wasright. One by one the various systems andpieces of equipment were checked out andthe results of the months of work in thedockyard became apparent. The steamiesdelightedly found that they could achievemore revolutions and make the ship gofaster than at any time since before the

modernisation started in 1959 - a greattribute to the efficiency and skill of bothdockyard and ship's company workduring the D.E.D. The airey-fairiescouldn't wait to get started and soonaircraft were coming and going as if wehad been in business for months. Some ofour own squadron people came to have alook at us and to get in some deck landingpractice and a few embarked and pro-vided the aircraft for the flight deck teamsto play with. The weather turned a bitsour but all the essential tasks wereachieved. During this period the first

Royal Navy Phantoms appeared in thesky over a British carrier and for the firsttime a British deck reverberated with theroar of reheat Spey engines as the firsttouch and go landings were carried out.

After a fortnight or so of this wereturned to Devonport and had about10 days to put right all those things whichhad been found to need attention beforewe could get down to the serious businessof squadron embarkation and our firstwork up.

Easter egg for 0lmeda WORKING UPEven Eagle couldn't sail on Good Fridayso we sailed a couple of days earlier andembarked our Vixens, Wessex's andGannets on Maundy Thursday, when ourHome Air Command friends ought tohave been on leave, and made leisurelypassage up the Irish Sea and aroundNorth Scotland en route for the MorayFirth. Splendid weather, and all over theworld people were paying good moneyfor Easter travel of various sorts and webad our own free Easter cruise. Cunning800 Squadron delayed their embarkationuntil well after the `holiday' but soon theskies over N. Scotland were thick withaircraft. Mountain and glen echoed theroar of jet engines, innocent fishermenwere surrounded with whirlybirds furious-ly dipping their whatsits and a not soinnocent `trawler' busily followed in ourwake trying hard to appear inconspicuous.Bombs dropped, rockets fired, Seacatswhooshed, guns banged and flares glowed.

Some of these even struck their targets andgreat was the Gunnery Department's joyat a pilotless aircraft and a sleeve targetdowned in the same afternoon. Perhapsthat `trawler' was not quite so bold aftershe had witnessed a few Seacat firings.

After two intensive weeks, during whichthe Flag Officer, Carriers and AmphibiousShips came to have a look at us, weanchored off Lossiemouth for three days'well-earned rest and some exercise ashore.But not for the first time the treachery ofthese northern waters frustrated the inten-tion. The first wave got ashore all right butit was soon clear that boatwork was to befar from easy. Near swamping of anofficer's boat caused cancellation of

further traffic - those ashore were ashore,those on board stayed - and so it was forthe weekend. On Sunday evening risingwinds made a getaway most desirable soeveryone was recalled. On Mondaymorning one of the greatest heli-lifts inhistory transported nearly a thousandofficers and men back to the ship and weput to sea with almost everyone onboard. The next 10 days in the MorayFirth produced hail, snow, gales, rain, fogand high seas but very little seriousinterruption to the programme wasexperienced and after finally landingsome Scottish natives for leave on27th April we completed the work up andturned south into the North Sea bound forPortsmouth.

Ten days' leave to everyone wentall too quickly and by 19th May we wereall back on the job in order to be ready tosail for our final work up period.

We sailed, of course, on Friday, 23rd May,embarked the squadrons in the Channeland this time headed for the south IrishSea. Our objective was a last burst ofeffort to bring us to top line efficiency forour ORI by the Flag Officer, Carriersand Amphibious Ships.

We were at sea with a job to do butsomeone had forgotten that it was Whitweekend and the Great British Publicwere on holiday. Some hundreds of thesehad converged on that blissfully peacefuland scenic spot in western Pembrokeshireknown as Nolton Haven in St. BridesBay - to lie and dream in the sun, to sail,to fish, to bathe and to enjoy the quietserenity of that favoured backwater. Butat 0730 on Sunday morning the air wasfilled with screaming jets and bombs androckets - or so we were led to believe -and within a couple of hours we reallywere National News. The Battle of

St. Brides Bay was on. It was nobly foughton both sides - the weighty sophisticationof Britain's greatest warship against ahandful of unarmed warriors in rowingboats. No battle honour recording thisencounter will hang proudly on Eagle'squarterdeck, for the enemy had a power-ful ally - the British Press - and themighty Eagle was defeated - retired tolick her wounds and peace again de-scended on St. Brides Bay.

And so to the ORI. A great effort byeveryone and somehow (nearly) every-thing went right. The staff seemed pleasedand FOCAS said we had passed, so onceagain the Eagle was fully fledged.

Not that we were allowed to relax.Back to the Channel we went to embarkthe Imperial Defence College for a shortvisit and the Phantom Trials team. Thenext two weeks were to be spent in pro-viding the deck for the series of landingsand launches necessary to find out if it hadbeen worth spending all that money onArk Royal after all. The first arrestedlanding of a Phantom in an R.N. shipoccurred on Monday, 2nd June and thefollowing morning the first launch wassuccessfully accomplished.

ATLANTICCROSSINGAfter three months of hard work in homewaters the prospect of relaxation in aforeign port was eagerly looked forwardto. On Monday, 16th June, after a wel-come weekend in Plymouth Sound, the` Grey Ghost of Lyme Bay' at last pointedher bows purposefully westwards, and asthe leader of a somewhat scattered forcecommenced the westbound Atlantic cross-i ng. For many this would be a firstforeign visit; for many more the first sightof the mighty United States of America -and for quite a few the first taste of openocean and venture into waters unshelteredby nearby land. But after a couple of daysof strong winds and ocean swell sea legswere rapidly acquired and the doctor'sadministrations to the very few were nolonger required. The quarterly full powertrial helped to push us well on our wayand we settled down to a comparativelyquiet passage with no flying to disturb us.It began to warm up and very soon` bronzy-bronzy' was the order of the dayas pale white skins concentrated on

getting the maximum exposure beforemeeting the expected fierce glare off theVirginian coast. Perhaps too, the prospectof all those suntanned Venuses to be en-countered (some thought) on the greatwide beaches, prompted not a few toensure that they could rival the equallybronzed local Adonises.

A balmy, but breezy Saturday eveningon the flight deck under the stars providedthe setting for the Commission's firstSODZOPRA. As usual, talent emergedfrom all sorts of unexpected places, agood time was had by all and the finetraditions of this noble form of culturewere well maintained. The first `Ship'sGrand Draw' provided prize money ofnearly £1000 and the Captain drew thetickets and made sure that it was welldistributed. First prize of £300 went tothe NAAFI barber - but even so the priceof haircuts went up a few weeks later

management of Padre John Davies, did aroaring trade and sold a total of some3000 coach seats for the various sight-seeing tours. Williamsburg can hardlyhave seen so many Englishmen since thedays when it was the capital of the NorthAmerican colonies. And all the time thekindness of our hosts with their un-counted, individual and personal acts ofhospitality, was creating and cementingnew friendships and much goodwill. On4th July, as all over town Britons andAmericans celebrated Independence Day,who would have believed that not 200years before British warships had bom-barded Norfolk, leaving, still to be seen, acannon ball embedded in the wall of theold church.

And so to the balmy waters of thewestern Atlantic off the coasts of Virginiaand North Carolina and to four days ofintensive flying before entering the greatnaval base of Norfolk, Virginia.

On Friday, 27th June we passed CapeHenry and in sweltering heat, nosed ourway round to Norfolk for a seven-day runashore. The advance publicity for Norfolkhad been by no means good - 'Too big,too far to town, too much U.S. Navy, tooexpensive, too difficult to buy a drink,etc., etc.', but to most of this the lie wasvery soon given, the far-famed Americanhospitality conquering all. It was soonapparent that there was plenty to do tosuit all tastes - from just lying in the sunwatching the world go by to a trip toWashington D.C. or to the fleshpots ofNew York City. `Halo Tours' under theenergetic, if not financially profitable Canada Day

Saturday, 5th July saw us regretfully onour way; tired but happy, and with a fewdays' respite as we sailed northwards toour second port of call. A day or two'sflying enabled the aviators to keep theirhand in and by dawn on Wednesday 9thwe had rounded Cape Cod and wereheading for Boston, Massachussetts.
