PROTOTYPE HISTORY Beginninginearly2010,NSSD60#6653enteredtheJuniatashopsinAltoona,PAaswhatwouldbethefirstof240plannedunitsoftheSD60ECapitalRebuildProgramforNorfolkSouthern.FollowinginAugustthesameyear,SD60s#6567&#6576wereretiredanddestinedfortheSD60Eprogramthatwasplannedtocontinuethrough2019.Mechanically,theoriginalprimemover,a16-cylinder710G3,remainedbutwasthoroughlyrebuiltto710G3Bspecsandreratedto4,000horsepower.Theoriginalshaft-drivenaircompressorwasreplacedwithanewmotor-drivencompressor.All-newelectricalcabinetsandwiringcoupledwithEMD’sEM2000microprocessorcontrolswasinstalled,alongwithD99BTRtractionmotors.Anewsplit-coolingsystemhelpstheSD60EmeetTier0+emissionrequirementsandreducefuelconsumptionbyanestimated5%ascomparedtoanolderSD60model.TheSD60E’stractiveeffortisratedat109,000poundswhileanun-rebuiltSD60isratedat96,320-100,000pounds.

ExternallywhilemostoftheSD60’scarbodyremainedintact,theprogramincludedtheinstallationofacompletelynewcab,offeringcrewsbettercrashprotection.TheoriginalSD60cabweighs3,800poundscomparedto12,500poundsforthenewcab.AmorespaciousworkenvironmentisavailablewiththenewcaboftheSD60E.ThiscabwasdesignedbyNSwithinputfromoutsideconsultantsandtraincrews.FabricatedbyCurryRailroadSupply,alocalvendor,itlooksunlikeanythingelseonU.S.railswithitspronouncednumberboard/headlighthousingandflatfrontwithacenteredcabdoor.

ThefirstunitwasfinallyreleasedforserviceonNovember15,2010,carryingroadnumber6900.InMarch2011,6901wasreleased,followedby6902inJuneofthatyear.ThesethreeunitsgaveNSmechanicalpersonnelvaluablefeedbackastheunitstouredthesystem,enduring“reallife”testing.

InMarch2012,thefourthSD60EemergedfromJuniataasoneofthe12unitsinitiallyfundedfortheprogram.Butthepaceoftheremanufacturingprocesspickedupasinitialteethingproblemswereaddressed.Theunitssoonmetthecarrier’sexpectationsandbeganenteringrevenueserviceonaregularbasis.
