PAPER 2 Reading (60 minutes)

Part 1

Questions 1-10

Read the text and questions below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

Code switching is when people witch, or change, from one language to another while speaking. They might begin a conversation in one language and then, later in the conversation, switch to another. They might also begin a sentence in one language but end in another. Or they might insert a word or phrase from another language. When and why people code switch depends on the speakers and the situation.

One reason people code switch is to show social closeness. Imagine that two women meet at a party in New York, Gabriela is Brazilian and Pamela is British. In their conversation, Pamela asks:

Pamela: Where are you from?Gabriela: RioPamela: Really? Uma cidade muito bonita [a beautiful city]. I was there last year.Gabriela: Oh, do you speak Portuguese?Pamela: Um pouco [only a little] …On the other hand, people also code switch to create social distance. (1) Sometimes this

happens in immigrant homes in the United States where the children can speak English, but the parents understand only the language of their native country. (2) Children can code switch to keep their parents from understanding everything they say. (3) Likewise, parents may ode switch when they share a language that their children do not understand. (4)

On the final reason that people code switch is lack of knowledge about a language or lack of attention to one’s language. Imagine a teenage girl living in a Latino community in Los Angeles. Talking with her friends, she says, “Espérate [wait a minute]. What did you just say???” It is possible that the teenage was not trying to show social closeness or distance. Perhaps she didn’t know how to express the second idea in Spanish. Most likely, she may simply have switched to English without paying much attention to which language she was using.

Code switching occurs between people who share more than one common language; however, it can also occur between people who share a language and a dialect, or variation, of that language. A person may use one dialect at home and then switch to another dialect at school or work. One example is the way teenagers use slang when talking to their friends. For instance, a teen might say to his friend, “Gotta bounce. Me ‘n’ the crew’re goin’ shoppin’ for some mad phat gear”. Gotta bounce means “I have to leave”, the crew means “my friends”, and mad phat gear means “nice clothes”. Therefore, the teen is saying, “I’m going shopping with friends”, but only speakers of both English and this teen dialect can understand. Teens use their dialect because it helps them to show that they fit in with their friends. It is also shows that they are separate from their parents.

Regardless of the situation, there are two important rules for code switching. First, the speakers have to know both languages or dialects – at least well enough to follow the changes. More importantly, the switches have to be grammatical. For example, the sentence “Tengo que

Page 10: học làm mẹ

do my homework” follows the subject + verb + object grammar rule in both Spanish and English.

One day you may be riding on a train, listening to the people next to you having a conversation. If you can understand only 50 percent of what they are saying, perhaps they are code switching – to show each other closeness – or perhaps to stop you from listening in on their conversation!

1. What is the main idea of this text?(A) showing closeness between speakers(B) hiding your ideas from other people(C) learning a new or foreign language(D) switching between languages

2. Why does the author use the example of Pamela speaking Portuguese?(A) to show code switching to create closeness between speakers(B) to show code switching to create social distance(C) to show code switching with a dialect of a language(D) to show code switching by an immigrant to the US

3. The word dialect can best be defined as(A) a language used by teens(B) a variation of a language(C) a sentence in two languages(D) a foreign language

4. In paragraph 5, why does the author use the sentence, “Code switching occurs between people who share more than one common language; however, it can also occur between people who share a language and a dialect, or variation, of that language”?(A) to make a transition(B) to summarize an idea(C) to give an example(D) to start a conclusion

5. According to the passage, what is the function of slang among some teenagers?(A) to share a common language with their parents(B) to create social distance from one another(C) to express closeness with one another(D) to show closeness with their parents

6. What rules does a speaker have to follow when code switching?(A) show closeness to the other speaker(B) speak directly to the other person(C) use languages both speakers know(D) complete a sentence before code switching

7. In paragraph 6, the phrase Regardless of the situation is closest in meaning to(A) in all cases(B) in some conversations

1 Critics call it a “human zoo”. Tour companies consider it a tourist attraction. Whichever is the case, the long-necked women of Padaung have become an important source of money for several small villages on the border of Thailand and Myanmar.2 Each year around 10,000 tourist visit three small villages along the Thai/ Myanmar border to see the famous long-necked women. The attraction is a tradition which requires women to stretch their necks by wearing brass coils, or rings. Originally from the Padaung tribe, the women and their families have running from Myanmar to Thailand since the 1980s to escape poverty and war. Their new lives are very different from their lives as famers in Myanmar. Now they spend their days talking with tourists, posing for pictures, and selling hand-made souvenirs.3 When a Padaung girl turns 5, a thick coil of brass is wrapped around her neck. At different times in her life, more rings are added until her neck carries up to 25 of them, weighing 5 to 10 kilos. The rings push up her chin and press down her collarbone, making her neck longer.4 Pa Peiy is a young woman with 20 neck coils. When asked to describe her early years of neck stretching, Pa Peiy said, “At first it was painful, but now it’s ok. Now sleeping, eating, working, … everything is ok. But I cannot take it off, so this is my life”. Truly it is her life. Pa Peiy’s neck is now so weak that if she takes off the coils, her head will fall forward and she will stop breathing.5 Despite the discomfort, Padaung women in Thailand continue to wear the rings even though the tradition has almost disappeared in Myanmar. The simple reason for this fact is that there is money in it.6 Ma Nang, a graceful woman with 24 neck rings, explains that in Myanmar she had worked hard growing food. Today, she sits while tourists take pictures of her. In one month she makes seventy to eighty dollars. Ma Nang added, “Sometimes I’m tired of tourists always looking at me, but it’s wasy work and good money for my family.7 Each year, as the long-necked women become more and more popular, the controversy about them increases. In a hotel in Thailand, tourists discuss whether or not to visit Nai Soi. Sandra Miler, from Toronto, Ontario, feels that it’s fine to visit Nai Soi. She explained, “I don’t really see a problem. I mean, this is their tradition, and so, if I go, it’s like I’m helping them to feed their families and so on. They need the tourists”.8 Frederick Johnson, a visitor from Seattle, Washington, disagrees. “Actually, I don’t see that we’re preserving tradition at all”, Johnson explained. “This tradition has already died in Myanmar. These women are just harming their bodies to … to entertain us. It’s degrading for these women. It’s like paying to go see animals in a zoo”.9 For now, the future of the long-necked women is easy to predict. As long as there are tourists who will pay to see them, they will continue to wrap their daughters’ necks. The controversy continues, with one side seeing the villages as examples of how tourism can save dying traditions, and others criticizing it as harmful and degrading to the Padaung women..

(1) Heathcliff Huxtable is the name of Bill Cosby’s TV character in The Cosby Show. Actually, his family and friends just call him Cliff. To the rest of the world he is Dr. Huxtable, a kind and friendly obstetrician married to a successful lawyer, named Clair.(2) Cliff and Clair Huxtable are the loving African-American parents of five children: four girls and one boy. They live in a nice big house in Manhattan filled with pretty furniture. They are well dressed, and their children, ranging in age from preschool to high school, are bright and charming. Grandma and grandpa are part of the fun, too. What’s so sunny about that? No pies are thrown; no funny costumes are worn. Instead, Dr. Huxtable relaxes at home in a sweater and does simple fatherly things. The children often bicker and make up, and sometimes there is tension between husband and wife. In the end Cliff and Clair look at each other, and we know what they are thinking: you’re a pain in the neck, but I still love you.(3) Again, what’s so funny about that? It’s quite simple. Cliff and Clair show us family life in America not as it is, but as it could be. In a perfect world, both husband and wife have satisfying, high-paid careers. They still have time and energy to love their kids, and when pressures build up, they are able to do amazingly funny things with his face. When he raises his eyebrows, smiles, and chuckles, we kno that everything is going to be all right – and this is comforting to all of us in the real world. Dr. Huxtable is here to show us that yes, life is a little frustrating at times, but if we chuckle our way through our problems and if we love people around us, things are going to be ok.(4) In the sow, Cliff has a cold but doesn’t want to admit it to himself or anyone else. [1] Every time someone asks him if he’s sick, he denies it crossly. [2] Finally, at the end of the show, he admits it, and, like a child, asks his wife to take care of him: “I’m sick. Will you take care of me?” [3] As Clair helps him climb the stairs she responds, “Yes” Cliff continues with a series if questions like “Will you put me in the bed? Will you take my temperature? Will you make soup for me?” [4] Clair says “Yes” each time. Finally, like a child who tries to use the situation to his advantage, Cliff asks “Will you buy me a pony?” We identify with Cliff’s imperfections and are comforted to see that someone loves his anyway.(5) This is good medicine for America. What America needs to see right now is a happy family. Henry Louis Gates Jr., a professor of African-American studies at Harvard, tells us that Bill Cosby is a very smart man. Instead of focusing on the very real problems of race and money, he shows us “a black family dealing with all things black people deal with, the same as all other people”. For example, Theo, the teenage son, has been borrowing money from all his sisters. They finally tell him he needs to pay them back with. So he asks his father foe an advantage on his allowance. Cliff says “Son, you’re already backed up to your 50th birthday. No” This is a familiar problem for many American families, but Cliff uses the humor of exaggeration to get his point across.(6) The Cosby Show is sure to please many people. I predict that the Huxtable will be in our lives for several years to come.

Questions 31-40

Read the text and questions below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.

(1) Even though I live in Los Angeles (or the United States) today, I am very proud of the traditional clothing of my native country, Sri Lanka. I still love the rich cultural traditions there. However, when I go back home to visit, I can see that attitudes toward traditional fashions are changing, especially for women.(2) Traditionally, women in Sri Lanka wear saris. A sari is a long piece of cloth worn like a dress. The sari is wrapped around a woman’s waist and then is draped over her shoulder. Under the sari, women wear a matching blouse. Most older women wear sari every day. Younger women, on the other hand, tend to wear dresses or pants rather than saris. Some of them think saris are too old-fashioned. Others simply think that saris are not practical for their everyday life. On hot days they can be very warm, and it can be difficult to walk in them because they are so long. In general, if young women are hanging out with friends, they want to wear something more modern.(3) This is not to say that all young Sri Lankan women want to be more modern. In some cases it depends on their family history. There are two main groups of people in Sri Lank – the Sinhalese and the Tamils. There are also some other ethnic groups, like the Sri Lankans, who are part European. The women who are part European tend to wear Western clothing because they had relatives who also wore Western clothing. But the women who are Sinhalese or Tamil tend to be more traditional. Therefore, today in Sri Lanka a woman’s background can still influence the type of clothing she chooses to wear.(4) Even though fashion in Sri Lanka is heavily influenced by the West, Sri Lankans have not given up their traditional way of dressing. In fact, as Sri Lankans become more aware of fashion, they are becoming more daring and adventurous about wearing saris. Babi Darmasena, a 25-year-old woman, says, “A sari looks nicer and more elegant than a dress”. She is happy with the variety of designs now available in stores. Darmasena admits that she feels pressured into wearing a sari on formal occasions, especially weddings. She adds, “My parents would never hear of me wearing a Western-style dress”.(5) [1] There seems to be an unwritten rule for women to wear saris for formal events. However, rather than feel limited by this, women take advantage of it. [2] Punya Presmadasa, who owns a sari shop in the capital, Colombo, says that there are a number of possible ways to wear a sari. [3] Among the many choices is to drape it over one arm like shawl instead of draping it over the shoulder. Or, if the blouse is finely decorated, then it does not need to be covered al all by the sari. [4](6) I am not upset about these changes. The world changes, and we have to expect our traditions to change a little, too. As I see it, the sari is just changing with the times.

31. What is the passage mainly about?(A) women in Sri Lanka prefer Western styles to traditional styles(B) women in Sri Lanka wear a sari on formal occasions(C) attitudes about wearing saris are changing in Sri Lanka(D) Tamil and Sinhalese women in Sri Lanka still usually wear saris
